What will happen if a FTL ship hits Earth?
Wahgineer replied to Aghanim's topic in Science & Spaceflight
From what I've read and heard, the bubble effectively seals the ship off from our universe, creating and indestructible barrier. Also, since the ship itself is experiencing no acceleration, it would pop out off the warp bubble at the speed it created the warp bubble, meaning it may very well enter the Earth's atmosphere at Mach 1.5. But the ship is more likely to pass through the Earth as if it didn't exist, since the indestructible barrier between the ship and the rest of the universe would just plow through everything. What you would end up with is a nice little neat hole through the center of the Earth, as well as a lot of cataclysmic events due to a star ship warp bubble passing through at super luminal speeds. -
Considering their predicament, the people on board would probably just except the fact that they're stuck in a giant spinning oil drum destined for a destination 300 years down the road. Once they except that fact, they'll settle into a day-by-day routine, undergoing the necessary processes to allow for the journeys continuation. Slightly out of context: This is why we need warp drives. We could build more ships faster, that take less time to get to a nearby star (think 3 weeks instead of 3 centuries).

Was the Space Shuttle an inherently bad idea?
Wahgineer replied to dlrk's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Ala shuttle-C? -
which many have already stated as being a time consuming pain. I personally would like ocean lag fixed, as well as: 3.75 meter parts properly nerfed warp drives other star systems KJR made stock all of the KSPX parts made stock improved aerodynamics

Skylon was meant to be unmanned since the beginning. If a skylon experiences some sort of failure, all that needs to happen is for the passenger unit/palette to burst out of the cargo bay and parachute to safety. All the control systems, life support, and space necessary to allow the skylon to be mannned would negate the moderate load/ high turnaround/ low cost advantages it will have over most other LEO launch systems.

1: we already have the technology and the experience to do this, no need to develop already existing technology. 2: those super hard engines to create already exist, too: they're called NERVAs (or, in KSP's case, LV-N atomic rocket motors).

Reuse the cancelled resources for science
Wahgineer replied to Szkeptik's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
It seems kind of funny that the only way to put resources back in is for the very reason that they were taken out: because they were too similar to science. Also, resources wasn't shelved indefinitely, it was shelved until the game reaches scope complete (all basic core features are in), were after it will be reconsidered and redesigned and added as part of the feature complete process: fleshing out the game and adding the nice little extra tidbits, like mining, orbital construction, interstellar travel, etc. -
Is gravity traveling at the speed of light?
Wahgineer replied to Kerbin Dallas Multipass's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I think my head just exploded. The only thing I can think of right now is: warp drive confirmed. -
Well, if you put some C4 in the right places, and blew them all up at the right time, or maybe even detonated a nuke in the reactor...

A possible Lagrange point workaround.
Wahgineer replied to BubbaWilkins's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
1: the gravity would be much lower 2: there is no surface, so you wont accelerate to light speed falling through the surface, you'll just orbit it normally. 3: if you ever got too close to the center, you'd either sling shot back out, or your orbit would be a straight line. No black holes. -
You guys realize that a spacecraft designed to travel Mars could be used multiple times over, lowering the cost (all you need to launch back up is fuel, which is a bit cheaper than launching up an entirely new ship)? And like many have pointed out, humans have many qualities that make them better than robots: self repairing, quick reaction times, precise decision making capabilities, extremely adaptable, multipurpose, can be retrieved to be reused as many times as you want, compact memory storage (2.5 petabytes in an object the size of a grapefruit), etc. Also, they have a natural curiosity that no machine can presently replicate.

What if there was a war for the Kerbol system? (You write it!)
Wahgineer replied to Bigcheecho's topic in KSP Fan Works
Suddenly, and unexpectedly, everyone's tracking, communications, and targeting equipment goes wild, as 5 previously nonexistent stars grow bright enough to bathe Jool in an other worldly white light. The Electromagnetic-Flux created by the 'stars' effectively shuts down and debilitates all electronics and electrical generators within the Jool system, regardless of EMP hardening. Suddenly, as soon as the stars appeared, they vanish. In their place rest five MASSIVE warships, armed with high GW lasers for close range combat, EMP bursters (releases a burst of debilitating electromagnetic flux), and, as a last resort, -E beams, capable of turning a planet's surface into an ocean of molten slag. These vessels are created and piloted by an aged interstellar race: the Humans. They come as diplomats, promising the kerbals new technology, as well as assistance in establishing an interstellar presence. There is only one catch: to set aside their differences and unite as one. If the refuse, then the Humans will have a display of power. If that doesn't convince them, they will then leave, to return 100 years later. If the kerbals refuse to agree, then unite and attack the humans, the humans will then decimate the Kerbal race, sending them back to the Stone Age, the humams will then depart, to return once the kerbals regain their interstellar tech, and hopefully their unity. -
Why should we go to Saturn? Why should we go to Mars? Heck, why is NASA researching the Allcubbiere Drive? Because it is human nature to push boundaries, to crush and circumvent obstacles, to make the impossible an everyday occurrence, to nurture and support and care for something no matter what, to learn new things, see new things, apply new things, to show that just because someone says no doesn't mean that they are right, to make life better and more wonderful for the next generation than the last, to prove ourselves, to grow, to mature, to protect, to see the glory of the universe for ourselves, and not through the eyes of a machine.. These are the things that make us Human. These are the reasons why we go, why we strive to reach the outer planets, why we pour our efforts into the allcubiere drive, in the hopes that, someday, we will reach out for the stars, and claim the galaxy as our own. THAT is why we should go.

Black hole starship engines : Whoa
Wahgineer replied to Minecrafter1's topic in Science & Spaceflight
After reading the OP, this is what I thought: He considers a 1 million ton starship powered by a black hole/bussard ramjet engine to be better/more feasible than a warp drive? How does that make sense? A ship with an Alcubbiere drive would probably weigh roughly within the hundreds of tons range, and would use a lot less dangerous engine that didn't use a blackhole, could be turned off, and wouldn't destroy a planet if left unattended. -
Landing on the dark side
Wahgineer replied to steelgrey's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
For me, the best thing to do on the dark side of the mun is to play some Pink Floyd. -
The only thing thing that I care to see in .24
Wahgineer replied to Wesmark's topic in KSP1 Discussion
What those of use who are pro-strong tanks mean is that the tanks have more rigid connections to a reasonable extent. Should a 500m tall rocket wobble? Yes. Should a 80m tall rocket wobble? No. Should a 30m tall rocket wobble? no. Should you need struts to hold down radial stages? Yes. -
I'm going to get ranty here for a second
Wahgineer replied to horndgmium's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
I think the main reason that many stock people want certain modded features as part of the game is because that mods are very subject to being dropped, outdated, and developed into something totally different. Also, you only have to install one thing, can start playing right away, and don't have to worry about incompatibility. -
The only thing thing that I care to see in .24
Wahgineer replied to Wesmark's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I should be able to build a Saturn V and, like NASA, not have to worry about it becoming a Giant Flying Spaghetti Monster. Tall, spindly rockets shouldn't need a load of struts just to attempt to stay together. The tanks should be more than enough to hold it all together. Like Bac9 said, a bug is not a feature to be defended, it is one to be squashed. -
Why the R.A.P.I.E.R engine isn't the S.A.B.R.E engine...
Wahgineer replied to MrZurkon's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Since the rapier is based off of the sabre, it functions identically: it uses air from the Atmosphere while in the lower parts of it, then switches over to Oxidizer once the intake can no longer take in enough air to fuel the reaction. the only difference between the rapier and the sabre is the Rapier's lack of a precooler. -
How would you improve the Shuttle design?
Wahgineer replied to Epic DaVinci's topic in Science & Spaceflight
By replacing the Shuttle with the Shuttle II, the only parts you dispose of every launch are relatively cheap ETs (4 shrunken down ones). The Shuttle II doesn't require a crawler, since it can be rolled out to the pad and then raised up to a vertical position there. It would have two reusable LFBEs (Liquid Fuel Booster Engines) that would detach after the first set of tanks to return to Earth. The entire tail swings down to release the payload inside, and the cockpit can separate to become its own spacecraft that can return to Earth. -
What DON'T we want in KSP?
Wahgineer replied to Deathsoul097's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Ftl and Stl people: NO!!! Here is what I feel is a comprehensive list of the Ftl and Stl view on things What Ftl and Stl see eye-to-eye on: Interstellar travel should be difficult to an extent. What Ftl people agree on: No instant stargate things. Warp drive (since it is the only other realistic option) must be nerfed so as to be balanced What Stl people agree on: higher time warp higher physics warp realistic Stl propulsion don't listen to Ftl people As an Ftl person, I finally think I found the major fault with the Stl way: realistic Interstellar propulsion The reason being: almost all forms of Stl propulsion can easily and totally replace every other engine in the game: Example: Orion drive can easily launch, orbit, transfer and land stuff on any other planet. An Ftl engine, properly balanced of course, fills only the niche it was meant to fill: that of an interstellar engine. -
You do realize that you're talking about a game that has no internal access to recipes, no tutorials, and has several servers dedicated to building beautiful, realistic, cool, and insane architectural constructs? Minecraft is not as brainless as you think.

[1.1.x] Space Shuttle Engines (2016-07-03)
Wahgineer replied to sarbian's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
We need to tell Scott Manley about this pack. Then, maybe he'll start launching his shuttles the way he launched his first one (he launched it shuttle style), since it will be a lot easier to fly them that way. He'll probably really like the action group/stager/radio controller/fuel floe breaker things, too!
