Just needs a little bit of Kerbfleet special saucer now for a truly iconic look. Oh - and I know that the premise of Kerbfleet webcomics has always been that 'what you see on the page works in-game' but in this case, I say: full speed ahead and darn the physics hacks. When the Rule of Cool just got turned up to 11, well sometimes that's all you need!

Whispers of the Kraken (Epilogue: Revelations of the Kraken)
KSK replied to CatastrophicFailure's topic in KSP Fan Works
"Toruk Makto? Hah - let me tell you about Toruk Makto. You boys think you're crazy? Think you're badS? You with the pointy teeth. You with the silly long guns and more trousers than brains. You boys ain't nothing compared to Miss Valentina here. So sayeth The Chicken. And if there's one thing I've learned from this vale of tears we call life, it's that you never, ever mess with The Chicken..." -
Or you could do it with cargo vessels. You could have a whole stack of tankers all carried by one mega-vessel to move them to where they need to be. Or put another way A ship shipping ship, shipping shipping ships. ...I'll get my coat.

Future propultion systems for spacecraft
KSK replied to Night_Wing_Zero's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Nuclear fission, probably using a bimodal nuclear-thermal rocket Use it as an engine and a generator as needed. The requirements for building relatively compact fission reactors with acceptable safety margins are known and have been for a long time. A fusion reactor would be even better once somebody works out how to build a working one that delivers an energy surplus and then figures out how to make it small enough to launch into space. Which probably won't happen any time soon. Edit: I presume we're talking properly deep space exploration here? Chemical propulsion combined with sufficient in-situ resource utilisation infrastructure might work otherwise. -
D'oh. Of course - Gene could have learned both words from Wernher. OK, forget my first paragraph. I stand by my Kenlie prediction though!

Unless the Russians have also perfected a real life HyperEdit to get their top secret supa-stealthy Saturn mission to orbit, then no, it's not real. It's hard to hide a rocket launch, mainly because unnannounced rocket launches by one country tend to make other countries rather worried. So much so, that said other countries devote significant resources to watching for said unnannounced rocket launches. Or put another way - if the Russians had sent anything to Saturn, the US would know about it.

Possibly I'm reading too much into this but look at what Gene said: "You don't know the words 'attack' or 'hostile' " - emphasis added. Now I'm not sure if Gene is simply addressing the fourth wall there for convenience or whether he's implying that although KSC personnel don't know the words, that he (and possibly others) do. So perhaps @Kuzzter's kerbals (and wouldn't that make an awesome name for a band ) aren't quite as peaceful as they appear. Also, whilst I think the Kerbulans are fairly obviously the villains of the piece, consider some of that Kerbfleet hardware when seen through their eyes. Certainly that Gliido looks awfully like a warplane - and a rather lethal one at that - unless you knew otherwise. Which they don't. As for a response, Fleigenstrudel jokes aside, my money is on a Crowning Moment of Awesome (possibly a posthumous one) from Kenlie. After all, he knows the Kerbulans better than anyone else in Kerbfleet except possibly Wernher. Having Kenlie finally do some of the stuff that he's only ever written about until now, seems narratively appropriate too.

Actually, I don't see any insurmountable barriers to making a good KSP inspired film. No - it can't be an adaptation because as @XB-70A rightly points out, there's no real storyline to KSP but I regard that as a strength rather than a weakness because it gives the film maker an essentially blank canvas to work with. It's the same reason why KSP is such a fertile source of fan-fiction. I don't think there's any need to worry about making a film for a small fanbase - make a good film and if anything, it'll probably help bring the game to a wider audience. That 'making a good film' part is the real trick of course but consider what the filmmaker has to work with: Plucky amateurs pushing the bounds of the possible. A fairly hard science-fiction setting. This is cutting edge technology with real risks of failure. An early days space program, the thrill of the unknown and the wonder of exploration. All of the above seen through the eyes of cute, slightly daffy aliens who are still human enough to be relatable to. Each and every one of those has made for good films in the past. Hard sci-fi spaceflight has become increasingly popular - see Gravity or The Martian for example. Or, going back a few years, Apollo 13. For a film about the beginning of a space program (and all the risks and danger that goes with it), look no further than The Right Stuff. If you want plucky amateurs, there's The Astronaut Farmer, or the real life story of Copenhagen Suborbitals. Heck 'amateur space program' is a venerable sci-fi trope going all the way back to Jules Verne and his Baltimore Gun Club. Finally, for the appeal of daffy aliens, look no further than (naturally), The Minions. It would need a good quality script but KSP has more than enough classic sci-fi elements to base an excellent film on.

Yeah, I think I'll have to be a bit selective. The Library was originally intended as a fanfic archive thread but expanded a bit to include other written works and graphic novels. For a first pass through the Mission Reports I'm going to insist on some story before adding it to the library, otherwise the quantity of material just becomes too much. Hardship is fine - the story there is picking up nicely - and I've just added it to the Work in Progress shelves.
-
A fine addition to the Library indeed and happily, already shelved under Fiction in the Works in Progress wing. It's an old link but I think it still checks out.
-
Link is in my signature but here it is again for convenience. I started a companion thread here for comments and suggestions but that gets largely ignored. To be listed, one simply has to write something and (ideally) post a request to either of the above threads with a link to the story to be included. I do trawl the FanWorks forums periodically and add anything new I find to the library but if you want something included quickly, posting a request is the best way. Giving the librarian an occasional boot up the backside can work wonders too.
-
Hey, hey - don't be like that. I'm just one person - my opinion is worth no more or less than anyone else's. Besides - it doesn't matter what level you're writing at - you're never going to make everyone happy all the time. It's impossible, even for published and respected writers. I can't speak for anyone else but there are authors for whom I'll queue up to buy their latest book. Or, more likely these days, buy the Kindle edition at full price on release day. Other authors - I might buy their stuff if I'm out of stuff to read or if it happens to catch my eye. Still other authors - well given the choice between their stuff and reading the back of a cereal packet, all I can say is 'pass the cornflakes please'. And this is for writers that make a living from what they do.
-
Hey @DarkOwl57. Well first off - and I say this in total seriousness - congratulations! You finished your war story and I can tell you right now that that puts you way ahead of most writers on this forum, myself included. And it was a pretty substantial piece of work too. If you ever feel inclined, check out the Fan Works Library. As the person who compiled and maintains (sporadically ) that thread, I can tell you that finished works of any length are a rare thing indeed. So try not to get too downhearted. You got followers and they kept coming back for more. So you must have been doing something right, yes? Next - war stories aren't really my thing, so I confess that I didn't follow yours past the first couple of chapters. But Cross Kountry looks very interesting indeed - speaking personally, I hope you find the inspiration to continue with that because I see lots of potential there!

Crystal clear. And may I say for the record that the Intrepid launch sequence still gives me chills. For me, Its right up there with the Build, Fly, Dream and Jebediah Kerman Begins videos as a statement of what KSP can be. And those videos have been my constant muses for the past three and a bit years. Thanks @Kuzzter

Whispers of the Kraken (Epilogue: Revelations of the Kraken)
KSK replied to CatastrophicFailure's topic in KSP Fan Works
You had to do it didn't you. You just had to... In the interests of getting this out of my head, I give you verse one of Derpay and the Chicken, with most sincere and heartfelt apologies to the Travelling Wilburys. Derpay and the Chicken were hard up fo' cash So they stayed up all night building boosters from trash For a rocketeer racketeer with a partner named Jan For reasons unexplained, she loved that Chicken, man Now Derpay was a kerbonaut ‘for he went to Cerima And found out the hard way that nobody gives a da.... They got themselves a sweet deal just across the county line So they hopped into a Converter – took flight route 99. -
Kerbal beats human at wrestling. Human beats kerbal at arm wrestling. Both protagonists see the futility of fighting and repair to the local cafe for a latte. Later, they open a highly profitable import/export business trading coffee, koffee and other exotic beverages between Earth and Kerbin. The End.

Working on the script for a feature-length KSP film!
KSK replied to JKerman's topic in KSP Fan Works
I agree with Steuben that war as a background to the KSP has been done a fair bit. That's no reason not to do it of course but I also agree with Steuben's comment about going for something different if you do. As an alternative source of inspiration you could look at the various amateur rocketry clubs and space societies that sprang up before the 2nd World War. The British Interplanetary Society for example, or the Verein für Raumschiffahrt in Germany. There was a Russian one too but I forget the name. What they all had in common though was a dream of going to space - and rockets were the way to get there. On Earth of course, rockets were adapted as weapons first and space launchers second (and then primarily as a propaganda tool to begin with). However, the original spirit of the rocketry clubs - peaceful exploration of space by amateurs - would make a pretty good background to the KSP in my opinion. Going with that approach also fits with your idea of the early KSP knowing nothing about rocketry. Finally, if you'll forgive the shameless plug, your opening episode isn't a million miles away from my own headcanon. You're welcome to borrow any bits that look useful although you'll probably have your own, better ideas! The very beginning (as told on the way back from the Mun.) And skipping ahead. I don't really go into much detail about all the stuff that happened in between I'm afraid but it sounds as though your series would! -

Heh. Plus, if there's one thing that Venus doesn't need more of, it's carbon dioxide. That was kind of my point though. Mining Venus is so far from being possible that one might as well consider an even more absurd option first.
