I had something similar, but it was bigger. I basically made the wings separately, each with two small docking ports. They had probe cores and RCS, so could dock with the plane and even survive reentry on Laythe, but the wings weren't very solid, and tended to flex a lot, especially under physics timewarp. Edit: Found one picture. It wasn't designed to reach orbit again, though.

Don't worry, I plan to go to all the planets, though Eeloo and Moho won't be visited directly from Kerbin.

@DMSP There are transfer windows to Eeloo, Dres and Duna before the "doomsday". I'm already putting stuff in orbit to send to Duna, in order to follow the one-launch-every-ten-days self-imposed rule. I spent 100 days putting equipment in LKO to send to Laythe, and will probably spend as much on the Duna mission. I think I'll leave Eeloo for later, since the biggest challenge is to be able to afford enough recruits in this short time. @Kuzzter Yeah, one does not have to stick to the transfer windows (for instance, I sent the Eve Scanner Sat way before my Eve window), but I'm trying to save on delta-v to keep costs manageable. New recruits are pretty expensive right now, and we got to save as many kerbals as possible.

Roughly one kerbal year, or approximately 15 chapters. It should be the climax of vol. 2.

Well, at least kerbfleet has one advantage. They'll have a huge battleship full of concealed weapons - or at least that's what the kerbulans are likely to assume.

The equipment I sent earlier had pretty much the exact amount of fuel needed to reach Eve, but of course there had to be some course corrections, and some stuff ended up about 200 or 300 m/s short on delta-v. Reaching Gilly ended up taking less than reaching low Eve orbit (since the aerobraking "simulations" all ended up in tears). Good news is that the mining equipment made to Gilly. Bad news is that the depleted ships don't have docking ports, so they'll require a kerbal to install fuel pipes. I may have to fly the Hardihood to meet them...

Nice ship there! Good luck maneuvering that behemoth - make sure you have lots of reaction wheels!

Your wish is an order! This one took a little longer to make because there were a lot of maneuvers to perform, as one convoy left towards Jool and another arrived on Eve. Enjoy!

Those are just the resources that come with Pathfinder and OSE Workshop. I believe they're from the Community Resources Pack. Since I'm not using any life support mod, a lot of those won't be used, although I might roleplay some life support stuff, such as finding a water supply for bases. As for the time-travelling kerbals, stay tuned!

It uses the OSE Workshop mod, that allows parts to be built and assembled using KIS/KAS. The Zonkers can probably build small sats in orbit, but it has to set up camp on a moon to build anything larger. Anyway, here's chapter 22! Thanks a lot to @Alchemist for helping pinpoint the fuel imbalance issue on the K.S.S. Hardihood! Looking at the persistence file I found out that engine #3 was actually drawing fuel from two different stacks, as if one stack had two different engines attached to the same node, while another had none. Detching and reattaching the engines using KAS resetted the part connections and actually provided an in-game fix for the issue. Now engine #3 is drawing fuel from stack #4, while engine #4 draws from stack #3, which is pretty weird but it's good enough for my purposes, since fuel consumption is now balanced.

Nice report! Can't wait to see what they find. I really like the archeological feel of recovering old saves!
-
Whoa, I think you nailed it. I have to check the persistence file, but it matches. Each radial stack has a reaction wheel on top, that coul be the root of the issue. Thanks!

Well, here's what I know so far: the KSS Hardihood has a central stack of tanks, and four radial stacks of tanks. The engines are on the radial tanks. These draw fuel from the center stack via fuel lines, and the fuel lines are symmetric and correctly attached. The radial stacks draw fuel from the center stack all right, but when the center stack empties, two of the radial stacks, on one side, start drawing fuel from the other two. This shouldn't be possible, since it goes against the flow direction of the fuel lines. I think for some reason the radial tanks are crossing fuel with the center tanks they are directly attached with. Other than rebuilding the ship, the only solution I could find was to turn off the radial stacks and keep refueling the center stack from them manually. Hope that's enough.

Hey, just stopping by to say Plan Kappa isn't dead. Right now I'm wrapping up the school year, and you can probably expect Vol. 2 to start in two weeks, maybe even earlier.
I might know what is going on here. Had similar problems with an old shuttle project. Here's the thread Kasuha made awhile back about fuel flow rules: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/64362-Fuel-Flow-Rules-%280-24-2%29?highlight=Kasuha
Yeah, I really don't know what's the issue. I'll have to do some tests myself later.
I said the words with a deep (not so deep) voice.sounds cool (you should try it!) So, any ETA on Vol.2?
Can't give an ETA, because while things are moving slowly right now, they'll move faster during summer break in a few weeks.
Go Bob go! So, what do you think is the fuel balance problem? Or maybe a better question: what do you know so far is not the fuel balance problem?
I have no idea. The fuel lines are all in place, but for some reason they're not draining from the central tanks at the same rate. Temporary solution will be to forbid use of central tanks and drain to the radial ones as needed. For some reason, there are also a couple of ladders missing. I'll have to build them at Yardstick Base and install via KAS. Seriously, that thing is a deathtrap. Bob may be trying too hard to be brave, he should have many concerns. Especially with where it's going...

Anyway, here's another interlude. At this rate, I'm probably going to do more of these than of actual chapters...
Its been a week since anything has happened here... :(
Sorry about that. I'm trying to put out another interlude this week, but things have been frantic in RL. I'm a teacher, and we're approaching the end of the school year in Brazil, so there's a lot of papers to grade. Good news is that the summer break is coming, and I'll have lots of time.

Nice postlude! I wonder if it isn't a good idea to use that mod that lets you paint parts, so the evil empire crafts can be painted black...
