Isn't that backwards snark? If not, please explain why, which I know you have no problem doing!

Joseph, While we applaud your initiative in starting more science based discussions, this entire sub-forum is dedicated to the discussion of science. Perhaps you'd like to revise your very open ended thread, and have it focus on a more specific topic that people can discuss?

Yup, me too. But the math worked out that I could make each ring the same thickness, and then turn them down to the correct profile. I had to make the bottom half a specific diameter though to perfectly fit in her cupholder in her car. So because i could make each block identical, I knew I could randomly pull each block out of a box to make each ring, so I did. So that is a pure random distribution of the blocks I had on hand.

The Near Future mods have been one of my staples for a while. Lots of cool looking parts. Moved to add-on discussion.

Vanilla NO MOD maximum ship speed
Gargamel replied to Pryor's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Well, let the members of the forum inform you on the glories of KSP! Stock KSP is about using 'real' science and physics to enjoy spaceflight and exploration. While having tons of fun crashing and then succeeding, you end up learning a lot about orbital mechanics and the like. It's got a semi steep learning curve, but even in failure, it is still spectacular. There are a lot of mods (Check out our mod release sub-forum!) that add a lot of the stuff you are interested in: Warp Drives, Other star systems, more types of fuel, and many many others. Check it out, it's been the best game I've ever spent money on. -
Welcome back!

Vanilla NO MOD maximum ship speed
Gargamel replied to Pryor's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
@Pryor, have you even played the game at all? Most of the stuff you are talking about in your posts is not even a thing in KSP. I would suggest you do buy the game, most people here would agree it is hands down one of their favorite titles, and learn what the game is actually about. Then, we would be more than happy to help you out in your game play. And not to burst your bubble, but there is only one star modeled in the game, the Sun, often referred to as Kerbol. Alpha Centauri is not in stock KSP. -
Those aren't mine, I'm not on my normal machine, so I don't have access to my crop of pics for this. I did want a pic that shows the various bricks and how they are assembled prior to turning. Here's a better one: And here is a mug I made as a gift, made from a bunch of exotic wood I had leftover in my scrap box, found the pic I posted elsewhere: And if we want, we could start a woodworking or general making thread, I don't want to derail this one.

Vanilla NO MOD maximum ship speed
Gargamel replied to Pryor's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
If you turn on infinite fuel, and run it for a few (dozen) days, you can hit light speed in stock KSP, although, using the cheat menu does beg the question if it is stock or not. In this video Scott Manley does just this, and explains a lot of the math. It is an old version of KSP (really old, the launch tower is still there, and the geography is all weird), but the math and the principles haven't changed. -
Docking Port Arrangement
Gargamel replied to MisterKerman's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
vs It depends on the intended use of the port. If you are building a station, and want to attach a new module that will be relatively permanent, then the node style works great. Also, if you have a specific vehicle that will be the only one docking with that one port, then a bespoke port for that vehicle is fine too. The port on the very top of my station pictured above is a Sr port intended for a miner to dock with. Both the station and the mining shuttle were designed with this mind. However, if you are not sure of what craft you will be docking there, then extended ports away from the main body of the station is usually the way to go. Think piers on the shoreline for larger ships to dock at. As you get better at building various styles of ships, your requirement for the space around the docking port will change. Having a port a distance from the station will allow you to get a variety of larger and larger designs in there. All my interplanetary motherships are roughly 2-3 times the size of the the station pictured above (They're basically a station, but with a propulsion system, latest design carries around 17k dv), so they tend to need a lot of space to dock with a station. Although, I try not to, since the part count grinds me to a crawl.... -
Go Tribe! I do a lot of woodturning. Ie, I put wood on a lathe, it goes round and round, and I cut it into (hopefully) circular shapes. I like to make segmented bowls a lot: These requires a lot of preplanning. I have to figure the exact dimensions of every brick in the bowl, so I designed a spreadsheet to accept the general planned dimensions of each layer in the bowl, and it will spit out the exact size of trapezoid I have to cut each block to. It also figures out the total amount of stock I require, including accounting for the saw kerf (the amount of waste caused by cutting the wood), and the little bit I require on the end so I can hold onto it without losing a finger. Plus it can estimate material costs for me. And then, I made it draw the shape of the bowl on a separate page. It will take the dimensions I entered in to the SS, and on the next sheet, it will resize the columns and rows, and then color them to draw a cross sectional cut of what the bowl will look like. that allows me to tweak the dimensions of the bowl so I can get the profile to look like I want it too.

Docking Port Arrangement
Gargamel replied to MisterKerman's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I use the structural tubes or similar style pieces to extend the docking ports out away from the station, with enough clearance for just about anything to nose in there: Oh, and moved to Gameplay Questions. -
No.... I can't even cheat at this thread apparently So, @Noobton

Grrrrrr..... I hate this thread... So..... @Gargamel!

You really shouldn't. -
Steam or not to Steam
Gargamel replied to Lankspace's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
Welcome Aboard Lankspace! Steam can induce some overhead above and beyond what the game requires, as it's own software and such keeps running in the background. But you can launch the Ksp.exe directly by clicking on it, even with the steam software shut down. -

Bad science in fiction Hall of Shame
Gargamel replied to peadar1987's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Before this thread devolves into a place we don't want it to go, remember guys we have rules against posting content involving conspiracy theories and such. Given the topic of the thread though, just be smart about what you post. -

In the weekly world news... Which aside from weekly, the rest of the name is a misnomer.
