Looks like a very big spaceship McQuacker and laudably ambitious mission. Thanks for sharing. If you want it linked on the front page it will have to be as a gatecrasher because refuel is excluded for K-Prize missions. Unless you want to do a K-Prize mission (see front page for rules) in which case you can include the grand tour link in your own K-Prize mission report post and the K-Prize committee (me!) can award the prize since a successful K-Prize mission cancels out a gatecrasher. Up to you.

I will look forward to seeing your mission Maverick_aus, in the meantime it is prize giving once again. So congratulations are due to... Empress Neptune Utilitarial Commendation (85t), Advanced Pilot Precision Award with S-840. Kergarin Advanced Pilot Precision Award 1st Class with the Stearwing A300 (undercover) SSTO. ... for completing the K-Prize with special distinctions itemised above. Thanks for your mission reports. Ore containers were a nice touch Empress Neptune and I liked the IVA scene Kergarin. Welcome both to the K-Prize party guest list aka the roll of honour.

If it was the accretion disc of a blackhole the planet would have to orbit in the same plane as the accretion disc or the sun band would become a circle every orbit. If the planet rotated so that the sun band rose and set stretching north to south then the axis of planet rotation would need to be parallel with the direction of orbit around the black hole. Due to gyroscopic effect this would mean the planet would end up pointing each pole at the black hole every orbit around it so that would not physically work. So maybe the jets of a black hole would produce some lateral emissions and that would work, but the planet would need a thick atmosphere and heavy magnetic field or be very distant from the jets to avoid being cooked by them and the accretion disk, which would necessarily form a bright patch in the middle of the sunband. So my feeling is it would need to be an artificial structure created around a planet which had lost its original sun. Possibly a circular ring in a polar orbit which has light emitting elements which switch off/on as they pass the poles so that only one half of the ring is lit at any one time. Another possible alternative is a planet sitting in a Lagrangian L2 point where it is in permanent eclipse but a sphere of billions of orbiting mirrors on polar orbits at slightly different altitudes are able to reflect light from outside the eclipse cone onto the planet surface. The mirrors would need to be cylindrical and the axis of the cylinder perpendicular to their orbit of the planet so that as the planet and eclipsing body rotate around the star the sphere of mirrors would continue to reflect light from the band of mirrors which was facing perpendicular to the path of light from the star. The altitudes or timings for the mirror orbits would need to be very close because they would need to pass into the eclipse cone at the poles to prevent excess night time lighting. But the poles would in any case be in eternal light due to the nature of the described sunband. 2c

Congratulations to... Kryten 2X4B 523P Advanced Pilot Precision Award 1st Class with Slingshot Mk1 SSTO. something Advanced Pilot Precision Award 1st Class with Mjölnir. SuicidalInsanity with Tower of Babel. ... for completing the K-Prize mission successfully with your researched and honed designs. Thankyou for your mission reports and welcome to the K-Prize party guest list aka the roll of honour. If you came up with a lift off weight SuicidalInsanity then the Tower of Babel might be a maximalist contender. W.Kerman sorry to say that entering a rocket for a spaceplane challenge is definitely gatecrashing! So I linked your mission report appropriately, plus your complimentary quip! Hope you like it, you have the choice to remove it if you complete a bonafide K-Prize mission successfully in this version, or leave it, its your choice.

Heloo o/ ... I drop in more often but wait for a few entries before embarking on the congratulations and prize giving! Otherwise it looks like I am spamming my own thread and or bumping it which might seem a little underhand. Anyway to more important business, congratulations to ... g00bd0g - Astrokerbal Distinction (Minmus & Mün), Advanced Pilot Precision Award with MK2 SSTO SpacePlane. Firemetal Pilot Proficiency Medal with The Space Bird. Thalamask Advanced Pilot Precision Award with Silver Dart (v1.05). ... for completing the K-Prize challenge and becoming steely eyed spaceplane pilots. Thankyou all for your mission reports. Well flown and welcome to the K-Prize party guest list aka the roll of honour. EvermoreAlpaca I saw your preliminary report and wasnt sure if it was complete so am waiting for the video you mentioned before linking. Thalamask I have listed your v1.05 mission with the others for now with an advisory in brackets, but also in the appropriate version list and when the version changes again I will leave the latter in place and remove the listing in the 1.1+ list... if I remember!

Its a bit sad they didn't fix these issues last patch but there is no use crying over spilt milk. As long as they are aware that this needs fixing I expect it will get fixed. The move to Unity 5 was a big move and likely to throw up problems and I have been following KSP for long enough to know that stuff gets broken but also that it eventually gets fixed. Though saying that there is a long list of longstanding bugs and I hope these will get fixed too once the new production team has settled down. In the meantime to avoid getting upset I am playing something else... anything else ... ... but I will return to KSP, its there in my steam library and isnt going to be removed. I bought it a few times in the early days just to be supportive but still the best fifty gaming bucks I ever spent. They should probably bring out some DLC but that said, I would only want to get those if the vanilla version plays well, if you see what I mean. Food for thought.

Thanks for the advice all. I did try adding 2x rear medium gear to a wing joint instead of the bottom of fuselage and that does not explode. It then did something very odd which I cannot replicate after a restart, because it made the wings vibrate like moth wings when the plane was taking off, which appeared to happen repeatedly at different sections of the T3 runway, then as the wheel / craft progressed down the runway it stopped vibrating and the craft progressed normally until it hit another vibrating section etc until lift off. I dont know what is going on there but it looks to me like the game engine got into ta state causing a runway / wheel interaction problem. While it is the kind of thing which could be involved in the exploding LV-10s, they only explode when they lift off and stop touching the runway so I think it might be a different kind of bug. But it does suggest there are problems remaining from the transition to Unity 5 relating to the runway and the wheels and the state the game engine gets itself into. I expect that when Squad get back from their holiday they will do some bug fixing so it'll be fine, but they can't fix 'em if they don't know where they are!
-
I am trying to take off using three point LV-10 Small Landing Gear on a 24t space plane and the take off velocity is over 100 m/s. (64bit version) They look right for this craft, the bigger ones look much too big and gawky plus they weigh 5x more. When I try to lift off with this craft the wheels always explode. I have tried upgrading the runway but it doesnt help. I tried strutting the wheels and while that was no easy matter because the wheel model doesn't accept struts very willingly that also didnt help. So what is going on here, is there a bug related to lift off triggering a crash event? Is what it looks like. Is it a known thing or is there something I am missing?

Congratulations to... mk1980 - Utilitarial Commendation (96.41t), Pilot Proficiency Medal with Winged Nightmare. Derpiderp Astrokerbal Distinction with Karpfenator MKII. g00bd0g Utilitarial Commendation (72t), Advanced Pilot Precision Award with Stock MK3 Space Plane. ... for successfully completing the K-Prize. Thanks to all for your mission reports including Spartwo's incredible shinking spaceship which earned a gatecrasher listing for losing bits and that can be removed if and when the mission is completed successfully as I am sure you are aware Spartwo, or you can opt to keep it. For the winners, your missions have been linked and honoured in the first post, so welcome to the roll of honour aka the K-Prize party guest list.

We are on the honour system, all you have to do is say if the mission was completed but mission reports are always welcome. If it isn't completed then it has to actually land safely on Kerbin to be complete, which can be played and replayed from a game save of your choosing, so you can take as many tries as you like. As long as it actually flies the K-Prize mission and lands intact it counts. So congratulations are due to ... AeroGav Astrokerbal Distinction, Advanced Pilot Precision Award with Astrojet Citation. ... for completing the K-Prize mission successfully and earning the highly coveted Astrokerbal Distinction for a Minmus landing and Advanced Pilot Precision Award for returning to the Kerbal Space Center landing strip. OK @AeroGav thanks for your video reports, did you finish the mission by landing on Kerbin or do you want gatecrasher listing ? Likewise @cantab I sense another contender for the Gerry Anderson Homage award. I also detect a predeliction for vertical take offs but do you want the notoriety of a gatecrasher listing? Or will you upgrade your runway and find a way to go horizontally a bit before you lift off? @mk1980 nice work but you neglected to mention the name of the craft ... so I called it Candlesticks Congratulations to ... Kneves Utilitarial Commendation (40.520t), Advanced Pilot Precision Award with Bessy. mk1980 - Expeditionary Astrokerbal Distinction with Candlesticks. ... for completing the K-Prize mission successfully. mk1980 is right, no refuel, the point is to compare the capability of reusable craft using its launch specs. @mk1980 you can land any way you want as long as it doesn't lose parts, so a lost solar panel means your mission does not get a link on the guest list but could be a gatecrasher. You are exempt from automatic gatecrasher listing due to having successfully completed the K-Prize during this version but if you specifically want to link the mission via the gatecrasher list then I can add one, with a suitable quip. Your decision.

@mk1980 what I was trying to establish was whether you intended to make Mk2 a K-Prize mission report? If so please say so and state / show how it completed the mission so I can link it with appropriate awards, multiple planes are welcome, eg Kergarin's honour roll listing. Missions count if you land back on Kerbin, landing on another planet does not count as mission finish but does count towards the kudos awards. See other rules on first page, eg no refueling form ore fyi. @Jhawk1099, your proposed mission profile would earn the coveted utilitarial distinction if the rover was dropped off from the landed craft. See rule 9 on first page. Congratulations to Kergarin x4 ... - Advanced Pilot Precision Award with POD1 SSTO V2. - Advanced Pilot Precision Award with SSSTO1. - Utilitarial Commendation (station), Advanced Pilot Precision Award with Excalibur Station Lift. (Special Gerry Anderson Homage award.) - Advanced Pilot Precision Award 1st Class with DELTA6 LF. ... also to ... Jhawk1099 Utilitarial Commendation, Advanced Pilot Precision Award 1st Class with Tiburón mk1. ... for completing the K-Prize mission successfully, thankyou for you mission reports and welcome (back) to the guest list for the K-Prize party aka the roll of honour.

Yes I did overlook it sorry, I got caught up in answering questions, told myself not to forget your mission and of course promptly forgot it. But then I couldn't find a name for your ship so I gave it a temporary name, what do you want to call it? Hopefully I have got everyone this time. So congratulations to ... mk1980 Advanced Pilot Precision Award 1st Class with Startours 2. Kergarin Advanced Pilot Precision Award with MK1 Mini SSTO. - Advanced Pilot Precision Award with MK3 SSTO "Super Short Shuttle" - Utilitarial Commendation (36t), Advanced Pilot Precision Award with MK3 Z2 cargo drone "Zeppelin Winglift". - 2x Utilitarial Commendation (36t), Advanced Pilot Precision Award with MK3 Z2D cargo drone. - Advanced Pilot Precision Award with Experimental X-Thing SSTO. Prieblander 2x Utilitarial Commendation, Advanced Pilot Precision Award 1st Class with SSTO Drone "Twin". ... for completing the K-Prize mission successfully, thanks for your mission reports. Welcome to the K-Prize party guest list aka the roll of honour. Kergarin I make that 5 missions. First and last were gatecrashers due to refuel from mining and "not landing" respectively but your overall record is success due to the other missions. Let me know if the last landed successfully, I construed from your comment and lack of screeny that it didn't. Fun design though.

Yes of course, stock is king (for lifting related parts and physics see first post for rules), all the 1.1s are going to be under the same version though for administrative simplicity unless there is a big difference in part balance. I have added a + to the version number to indicate this.

eloquentJane, fixed. Thanks for your reports both, congratulations to Jetski for completing the K-Prize mission successfully, listed on the party guest list as follows. Jetski Advanced Pilot Precision Award with SSTO. n.b.z. great looking ship and report, worthy of a gatecrasher listing plus quip poor Mirgy. FYI would have been a gatecrasher anyway due to the refuelling thing.
