SSTO + FAR + Deadly Reentry Help
Hodo replied to Zeenobit's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Ok I see one thing that maybe going wrong for you on step 3. Because it is about the same procedure I follow on my SSTOs. I think perhaps when you are pitching up you are pitching up to much on the burn stage. It is causing the airflow to become to strong at the front of the craft, moving the CoL forward and thus pitching you end over end. If B is happening the issue is your CoL is moving back as you go faster, mach tuck. This issue is pretty common in SSTO space planes expecially ones with canards. What is happening you are losing lift on your canards they are stalling out at those speeds and at the AoA you are attempting to get them to pitch to. This is causing you to lose all lift at the front of the craft, and thus pitching down no matter what happens. I try to keep from using canards for this reason. You can fix most of this by reducing the amount of pitch authority this control surfaces have. Also by checking in the FAR diag screen to see how your lines look. EDIT, As seen here. This is one of my latest designs I am working on. It flies fine but has some mach tuck issues at supersonic speeds. You can see it on the graph. But this is mostly ironed out by some minor wing and fuel tweaking. -

Best of luck with real life, it takes prioity over KSP. The game will be here. -

I absolutely love it, thinking outside the box. Great job! -
Odd wheel behavior with new Mk2 parts?
Hodo replied to I_Killed_Jeb's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The problem I am seeing is the rear wheels are out of camber. The angle they are at is why you have that random turning issue with your wheels. KSP does not handle wheels canted at odd camber angles compared to the ones that are straight up and down. -
Well it is good to hear that NK will be picking it up. I may actually update my RO install sometime this year.

The Rover Experts who haven't built any rovers.
Hodo replied to Xannari Ferrows's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
The aerospike didn't need a boost. It is already one of the best all around engines in the game. -
Is the craft designed using FAR or NEAR or is it stock souposphere? Either way you will want your CoL near the CoM, but not right over top of it, preferably just running through the back of it.

I was trying to avoid this question for a while but I have to set some things straight. FAR- does nerf jet engines, but it does also make the atmosphere more realistic so it balances out. The nerf on the jet engines is about 50% of stock. You can reach mach 5 on Turbojets, it just requires a VERY streamlined craft to achieve it. If you design a bad aerodynamic design, it will fly poorly. If you over fly the craft, it will fly poorly or just come apart. I know Wanderfounds SSTOs work, and work quite well. If you didn't follow the flight instructions on it you will most likely not succeed with any SSTO. There is a trick with any SSTO, rocket or space plane, is your flight profile. You can get away with a bit more in stock then you can in FAR or even NEAR. In stock you can put a brick with some wings and enough engines and intakes and you can fly to the mun. This simple design I made just before .25 came out worked perfectly as a SSTO and was one of the cheapest designs you can make. You can mimic the design with the new parts and still achieve the same results with a decent flight profile. In short with FAR you have to have a basic understanding how aircraft work, if you don't know how a plane works. Look outside at one flying over head or go to Youtube and watch a 5min video on planes, and you will understand enough to get one to fly in FAR.

Operation Return to Sender (Sequel is being made)

Basically that is what I did, took the simple design of the A-10, and went with it. It works for a reason, right? -
[WIP] Eskandare Heavy Industries, DEV THREAD

I look forward to your download release. If you need any information, I used to have a fair amount of resources on old Soviet Military technology. -

Great challenge, I have now started setting up my own testing range in my save for military craft. Granted I have lowered the part count a bit more with some mods that let me do that. Procedural parts is wonderful. I think I am also the only one to do it with an SSTO space plane. -

And I did it again with a more purpose built craft..... A-108 Anvil Sometimes there is a reason why the military uses some designs.. This thing takes off at a really low take of and landing speed, 110knots take off and 90 knots landing. -

Completed. I had 4 CBUs left over that I really didn't need and did most of the damage with the GAU-8. The lag was so bad taking out the lasers that I didn't get any pictures of that. Which sucks because those were the hardest to kill. -
Nope all of that is in the B9 pack.
-
No need for the #0 at the end of the tag. And it looks like he used Infernal Robotics and B9 and the modular rover plugin... I cant remember the name of it, but it lets you make some pretty cool boxy looking rovers.

This was a design I came up with a long time ago for a challenge. It was a mediocre success. It was powered by a bunch of ion engines with a backup orbital burn drive of 3 nukes. I think it had a total of 10km/s delta velocity on ions alone and another 4.5km/s with nukes.

Or if you really wanted to. Firespitter, electric props and a few solar panels and electric generators and you can fly around forever in FAR or Stock.

Operation Return to Sender (Sequel is being made)
Hodo replied to War Eagle 1's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I had been at a stump on designs for a while, and hadn't had a real challenge to force me out of the stump. But this challenge has made me realise something. I am good at making SSTO space planes, so I figured why am I trying to make a pure atmospheric fighter to do this job when I make SSTOs that can do this. Now that you removed the lag monster tank and APC I can actually get near the KSC without it turning into a slide show I may be able to do the job at hand. -
My first launch was a simple rocket and it was in sandbox mode. It made a 75km x 100km orbit with ease. I almost quit playing after that then I found FAR and DRE. I have been hooked ever since, making space plane SSTOs since 2013.

Yeah it is an assimetrical flame out issue. One of your engines is suffering from air starvation and losing power before the other, this is causing your craft to push to one side and spinning your craft out. The easiest way to fix this is to throttle back as you get higher and keep an eye on your air flow to each engine. The other option is to download either of these to mods... Mechjeb, or Kerbal Engineering Redux (KER) Both provide HIGHLY useful information like air requirements for your engines.

As Ferram once said to me after one of my designs flew that I didn't think should. "If you get anything to go fast enough it will generate lift." Actually that design has quite a bit of lift to it. You have quite a few wing on that craft without factoring the body itself. But the lifting body is helping.

Touhou Torpedo made a Mk3 wide body cargo bay a while ago, but it was never updated past .21. It worked until .24 but after that I cant tell you if it worked or not. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/29661-TT-s-Mod-Releases-Development-suspended-till-further-notice I am not sure if I still have it anywhere on my computer at home, but I can look.

I would like to thank you War Eagle 1, for inspiring me to make a new SSTO combat craft.... FA-107 Thundergod I will attempt the challenge a bit later when I get more time. But test appear to be quite favorable.
