  1. My uncle's pet rock has been trying to communicate with him for several decades. The problem is, our metabolism and the rock's metabolism are too divergent to allow perception of any communication by one or the other.
  2. Ooops! You're right; I have such a habit of using only SRBs in career mode until I require more control, that I've simply ignored that. I had forgotten that its even available then. I'd like to see the default set at zero throttle and once the launch bar is pressed, a UI light blinks red for liquid fueled rockets until the throttle is engaged; this might help the new players.
  3. I used to name missions based on destination or capacity (in terms of destinations for general use craft), but since Contracts, I go with the somewhat mundane (no pun intended) contract title. This becomes more important if I end up with several active missions with multiple craft orbiting the object in question. If its the same/ similar contract later and I accept it, I simply add a sequential number to the name.
  4. I think Squad is trying to force new players to consider throttle strategies (and not too early in stock career mode) by defaulting it at 50%. The new player (or any player in stock career mode) only has SRBs initially, so may be oblivious to the meaning of the throttle setting during those early launches. Once LFRs are obtained, the new player would be in the habit of leaving the throttle alone and perhaps successfully launch a vehicle (but not necessarily flying it) without the frustration of hearing just a hiss at first LFR launch attempt due to a throttle setting of zero. The 50% default might suggest to a new player that there may be advantages to throttling below 100% initially during launch and early flight. Once that player experiences any problems associated with such flight, the new player is then forced to make some kind of change. This might occur in the VAB through a redesign, or perhaps better yet, the player may try experimenting with the throttle settings during launch and/ or flight. I'm not saying that I agree with this viewpoint, but it seems to be what Squad had in mind when making the change to the default setting.
  5. Control and delays associated with it are why spinning can be problematic. A good solution, recommended above and one I use when needed, is to add Sepratrons. Their mass and drag (and part count) are negligible compared to the effect of reducing or eliminating damage and control loss to your craft.
  6. Well, at least you are not calling yourself RocketCat, which is the favored (and somewhat impatient) cat at Nyrath's Atomic Rocket site. Besides, SpaceKitten seems like a nice name for the kind of cat that a Kerbal would soothingly pet, gently strap into a command capsule and then with glazed eyes and a subtle chuckle, launch the craft at full throttle on a one way flight. Seriously though, welcome to the forums and happy building and flying!
  7. Nice! While you can see an image of some of my fueled nose "cones" and translucent fueled adapters, linked in my sig line, I haven't uploaded anything since the move to Cursed. I'm not really against the site, I just seem to lack the time to make more parts and make them available.
  8. No for-profit groups (sorry, Squad), but if your group wants to get in on jazzing up some catalog designations, read about the contest here: http://www.iau.org/news/pressreleases/detail/iau1501/ Registration info/ link is there as well. Good luck!
  9. I think it goes back to Harvester's desire to rank "fun" above most considerations when it comes to the details of KSP. The only problem is that "fun" is a relative word. However, given the popularity of KSP, most people appear to agree that the game is "fun" enough to keep at it.
  10. I have to agree that there are some talented musicians in this forum, such as UpsilonAerospace. Imagine more stock KSP music from KSP fans.
  11. Wow! Lots of sloooow loading images. But hey, a fun thread. I'll start with United Planets Cruiser C57D. If you think you've seen this; surprise! Oh yeah, before Skywalker's blaster, before Sulu's viewscope, before Uhura's earpiece, before the Moog, before Naked Gun, there was ... you get it. Meanwhile this ship even arranges its own eclipses: Und of course, score one for science; das ISV Venture Star: Rocket sleds (precursors to rail guns), string, ... more string. Fireball XL5: The UESC Marathon is Deimos, hollowed out: It was used to reach and establish a human colony at Tau Ceti in Bungie's game "Marathon".
  12. Welcome, Gent! Good luck with the game and here at the forums!
  13. The chart and test results linked in my sig line attempt to compare all the stock KSP engines.
  14. At least Squad's website tends to include correct spelling (and proofreading to eliminate line- and page- breaks) as well as understandable grammar. Of course, what patent pending warp drive site would be complete without a link to the Bermuda Triangle? But why wait, when a modder can make the proper warp nacelles for KSP now?
  15. Yes, I think we get the idea that you are THE Venus evangelist (more so than Mr. Landis it seems) and that the KSP forums are your think-tank, on this topic. I actually don't have a problem with this. I just think you'd be more successful at the other forums as you "conquer" Venus. Edit: Actually I've seen you post on a variety of topics (other OPs and your own). And its understandable as this thread seems close to your heart. /Edit. As I've indicated earlier in this thread, I value the concept of learning and benefiting from preliminary steps or goals as we attempt to spread out into the rest of the solar system. I don't think most people will desire to "conquer" Venus (at least its skies) until the surface of Mars is reached by humans; or more likely a base established. But I don't stop there. I think the best step for establishing a permanent human presence on Mars is to do so at our own Moon first. I find it interesting though that humanity seems to have this drive to go to somewhere somewhat familiar to them; in this case the desert world of Mars. Yet we largely don't seem interested in living, working or playing on the less harsh Antarctic continent or on/ under our much easier to reach (relative to off-Earth) seas and oceans and large lakes. We'd probably learn a lot right "here" too. All of that said, its a pity that the early science fiction writers were wrong about the Martian canals and the jungles of Venus. If those worlds had turned out to be habitable in that sense, we'd already have colonies, not just bases, at both of those worlds. The Internet as we know it (hmmm?) might already span three worlds.
  16. A logical extension of this is a sort of space elevator ... without the elevator.
  17. I hadn't thought of this but its a really good idea.
  18. While I really like the music used in KSP (including the Credits music), now that its in Beta, I'd like even more music added to the stock music rotation (without adding it myself). We've already seen visual and aural improvements in the way of new parts, textures, pyrotechnics and space center building iterations; I think the music could be expanded in a similar fashion and involves little additional coding; only someone at Squad willing to listen to and legally acquire the additional tunes. Perhaps Squad could even hold a forum contest to which members could contribute their own appropriate music, or links to appropriate royalty free music by others. New KSP music could be introduced to the game from this pool of winners in a similar way as was done with the KSP company logo/ flag artwork. How do you feel about such a thing?

  20. Somewhat off topic: sometimes temperature scans can't be done (even with no contract, just "doing science"). Temperature scans should always be able to be done, regardless of science points (or lack of them). Back on topic: I've never done physics warp, only time warp. That's nice to know since some burns are insanely long.
  21. One might say its a labor of love.
  22. I think if you are really serious about this, a real science forum frequented by a higher percentage of real scientists would probably yield more results to your liking. In contrast to a ... let's face it ... a gaming forum. Otherwise, just take a wait and see approach and hope that more posts satisfy your questions.
  23. I don't know how well KSP will run on a new iMac, but my 7 year old iMac does well.
