  1. a) Those estimates are made by morons. Total number of deaths that will ever happen due to radiological contamination from Chernobyl, statistically speaking, is closing asymptotically to few thousands with the time going to infinity. Million or few million, as even greater morons (Greenpeace) say, is a number that requires all cancer-related deaths in affected areas. Such illnesses existed before Chernobyl and will occur unrelated to it long after. They just mash all of it into one digit because they are fear mongering ignorants. Lack of progress and technological advancement? What the hell? Do you people live under a rock?
  2. Space.com is sadly, more and more riddled with sensationalism.
  3. I try to approach Kerbin from the side that would eventually remove some of my speed, so it's like a reverse gravitational slingshot. Every m/s counts. Next mission is Ablate, but the technology (Heat Control 1.0.4) still does not exist. Also, I'm pretty much burned from the whole mission just like the Kron 4 now is. It's time for making a sweet little station, throwing probes on inner planetary bodies, etc. I've been to Sentar a long time ago, when PF was released, and landed on all bodies. Other than the fact it's blue and has rings, which was a new and exciting thing back then, I don't find the system to be realistic. I consider it being an experiment in creativity. No plans exist for a Kron ship to visit that planet. Maybe someday, but I really have no plans for it. That's why I've deleted it from the mod. I have Ablate, Ascension and Inaccessable left. If Ablate proves to be impossible with the current thermal model, I might try Ascension, the comet.
  4. Jumping over? Only if you want to continue on foot. Driving through the canyon is a much better idea. I do have to express my concern over the validity of this mission. It's a known fact that nobody has ever been there.
  5. Does she save the sensors or just does this to get the data, and then lets them burn on reentry, later doing the same thing with new sensors who are unaware of what's gonna happen to them?
  6. Despite his eagerness to get to space, Jeb was happy he did not fit in the nose cone. He'll find a bigger one next time.
  7. There is no such thing as rocket science. It's engineering, aerospace engineering. The problem with this is not aerospace engineering. It's structural engineering. Such structure is impossible using today's materials. Everyone seems to focus on the launching and the fact the tower is not possible is ignored. This comic describes it 100%.
  8. Yeah, a tie. Here's the screenshot showing the failed reentry with the maximum speed. Kron 4 entering Kerbin sphere of influence. All of the crew members were excited, but Valentina was making the largest grin of them all. Spending a smaller part of the 6300 m/s (more or less) left in the tanks. Jettisoning the propulsion unit, service, cryo and habitat module. Kron 4 started to disintegrate rather fast. A final retro burn using the built-in monopropellant thrusters was used to try landing on the ground, but it did not work. For some reason the docking port also exploded, and the capsule fell in the ocean. There was simply too much speed involved. Kerty deploying the kevlar parachutes. Kron 4 splashed down near the shore. The crew is finally home after almost 13 years, waiting for rescue.
  9. Splashdown! Maximum speed of reentry without braking was 5300.5 m/s, which simply does not work. Taurus HCV shield explodes and the capsule is gone at 50 km. The ship therefore had to brake. Screenshots soon.
  10. This is speed relative to Kerbol. Relative to Kerbin, it won't be near this fast, but it will be quite serious. 30 km will be the starting periapsis. I'm more concerned about the Taurus HCV capsule doing its buggy tilting.
  11. You do realize plants to not turn light into matter? They use light as a main source of energy. They still need food.
  12. No way I'm driving anywhere. I don't have the patience. Kerty will survive, of course. Let's speed up the time. It's a bit more than 7 days before reentry occurs. Kron 4 is falling with an enormous speed. With some luck, I'll end up somewhere close to the equator.
  13. I'm pretty sure we'll get some kind of simplified life support such as "snacks" that would remove the need for wild speculations.
  14. Pile of poop. We don't have the technology to build slender structures of this height. Yes, we could reach 20 km, but it would take unpractically thick and wide lower parts. Patent trolling, that's it.
  15. I'm not sure about the reward this time because I'm not even sure Kron 5 will be able to go to Ablate, and Neidon is still not ready. Don't worry, I'll think of something.
  16. Jebediah, the main pilot, was the last to go to cryo-sleep. He spent a month with Kerty, but now it's time for rest. Kerty is alone again. Antennas and radiators are retracted. The ship is falling towards Kerbin. Start guessing the maximum reentry speed.
  17. Kerty calculated the optimal burn. It will take a bit more than 1500 m/s to fall into Kerbin almost 5 years later. Mun will be there to help if things go wrong, as well as some 6300 m/s left over in Kron 4. Burn in one month. The crew will prepare for hibernation.
  18. I honestly cringe at how some english-speaking areas use the "dark side" meme. Until I've heard it online, I never thought about the Moon as having one. Sociolinguistical stupidity at work, I guess.
  19. I forgot to use it so now it could be like a tracking buoy or something. There's lots of crap in the picture. Those dots mostly aren't stars.
  20. Engine shutdown. Kron 4 is leaving Urlum, ionizing radiation flux is falling down. Bill is removing the junk. Winch, spare uranium, strut endpoints, small radiators, spare food, all useless things will end up around Kerbol. A tiny probe was also jettisoned.
  21. Yeah, something like that. These simulations are nothing new, been there for ages, but I can't wrap my brain around them when I include the temporal distortion.
