For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread
StrandedonEarth replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The thin fibers of steel wool have high electrical resistance, which generates heat. The fibers are thin and light, and so heat up to red hot quite quickly. Red-hot steel likes to burn when exposed to oxygen; that's how oxy-acetylene cutting torches work (heat the work piece to red hot, then activate a high-pressure jet of pure oxygen). Hot-rolled steel forms a coat of black iron oxide. ANYTHING that's not already oxidized will burn if you heat it hot enough and expose it to oxygen, even diamonds. -
Sorry to interrupt this fascinating crossfeed discussion (I'm guessing the gain just isn't worth the complexity) but the usual hold-down test fire preceding every launch was successfully completed Sunday evening. The JCSAT-14 launch is scheduled for Thursday morning at 0521 GMT (or 10:21pm PDT Wednesday night), about 1 day, 5 hours and 30 minutes from now. This is a GTO launch with little margins left for landing, but apparently they will try another barge landing anyways without expecting success. Hopefully the hole will be smaller this time. As others have said, try without the heat shield as you really don't need it. More mass within the same cross-section means you don't slow down as fast. Also, if you're landing on land instead of water that means you have less airspace to slow down, especially if you come down over mountains

Apparently someone hid a camera in my house...

Lately I always seem to forget lights. And my docking always seems to happen in the dark. Good thing I dock by instruments instead of Mk I eyeball. And yeah, once I have RTGs I do not leave the pad without them. Never worry about forgetting to deploy panels (or lock out a battery) ag-*transmission signal lost*

I think this is a fantastic idea. And if they are just drawn from a folder with pre-defined names, people could just substitute their own pics, assuming the correct format and resolution.- 1 reply

I had a training mission going, from Mun orbit to Minmus surface and then planning on a peek into solar orbit. But I wasn't paying close enough attention when launching from the surface into Minmus orbit, and found the 7-kerbal lander(4 aboard) blasting past Kerbin with a 700km Pe on its way to interplanetary space, out of fuel. So I launched an empty 5-seat rescue mission from Kerbin, picked up some schmuck (another scientist, yay!) in Kerbin orbit, and managed a rendezvous as the lander swung past Kerbin. I docked and rode it to interplanetary space, grabbed some science (and some milestones), pulled the crew aboard the rescue vehicle, and got them all back to Kerbin. Now I'm just waiting for that Duna window...

What is your biggest science pet peeve in movies?
StrandedonEarth replied to todofwar's topic in Science & Spaceflight
You want a really so-bad-it's-funny movie? Peter Jackson's first movie, Bad Taste! (I'd post a pic, but there was nothing really suitable for these forums!) -
Not mine, but this one is great!: "Total Inability To Support Usual Performance" (T.I.T.S.U.P.)

Red Dragon confirmed!!

I bet they'll use pre-flown hardware (all 3 FH cores and the D2) to cut their cost as much as possible.- 453 replies

That was cool, nice little sideslide on the landing. I noticed a seagull gettin the heck outta there before the Falcon landed! It's about time they released that vid. I wonder if they have or will ever release a vid of the guys coming aboard to safe it and weld the shoes on. A vid of the falcon punch (crash landing) would be nice too...

Good thing it'll be a new second stage every time!

Red Dragon confirmed!!
StrandedonEarth replied to MajorLeaugeRocketScience's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I believe the sample-return plan was to have a small rocket inside the Red dragon, launching through where the docking port would be on top- 453 replies

If you get the Tourism Plus contract pack, it has missions that require a pilot. I'm still early in career; it may have other crew requirements later

Optimal shared-engine TSTO configuration

Well, the Saturn V used the same J-2 engines for the second (5) and third (1) stages... -

KSP 1.1 build 1230, 64bit I accepted a rescue contract around Minmus. I had a station contract going there (Bases and Stations contract pack), and fuel was low, so I got the station to rendezvous with the crew cabin without matching orbits, planning on EVAing Jocie and using her RCS to catch the station. But when I switched vessels and EVA'd her from the portrait window, she briefly appeared and then vanished, leaving behind the empty crew cabin. The usual rendezvous part of the 'contract complete' messages popped up, but she was gone. When I went back to the space center, she was sitting in the astronaut complex, ready for her next mission, but she hadn't been recovered yet. So I stuck in a capsule, placed it on the pad, and recovered it, which completed the contract, but she never received the experience for her flight. I don't need any help with this, as the contract did complete without the cheat menu. I didn't put it on the bug tracker, as I'm not sure it's repeatable (I didn't have a recent quicksave handy) But it is a bug, so here's the part of the log dealing with the rescue: [LOG 16:38:51.633] [FLIGHT GLOBALS]: Switching To Vessel Jocie's Pod ---------------------- [LOG 16:38:51.643] [PlanetariumCamera]: Focus: Jocie's Pod [LOG 16:38:51.656] [CHATR] Capsule starts the exchange... LOL I was just in there and didn't notice. Went in again and there it is! Edit: 777: A bug-free update? or at least free of major pitchfork-grabworthy bugs? -
