I can vouch for Anomaly Surveyor: it's a simple and to the point contract pack, gives you good starting funds, and directs you toward the 'interesting' game content. I have a question, too: what are the SSI contracts?

The way I understood the OP's question, it was between a full shutdown and hibernation, right? I mean, my laptop isn't on, but if I press power it will boot the OS and restore from a session file, rather that startup the whole thing. I ask the same question myself, and from time to time do a full restart just because it sounds like the right thing to do.

I would like to agree, and also add that the very fact that we have hydrocarbons in the first place means there is stored energy to be used. Sure there are hydrocarbons in Titan and even Pluto, but they aren't nearly as ubiquitous and versatile as 'Ore'.

Oh, I know chemical is fine. I meant that in response to the idea of building using the same mechanism as a NERVA (thermal rocket), but with a different source of heat. If you're using the heat generator as propellant, then you've gone away from NERVA-like and back to good ole' rockets. Agreed. Personally, I'd go for thermonukes (for which the topic is asking alternatives, sure), using whatever propellant is the most cost-efficient given the job/situation (say, CO2 for Mars-based tugs and such).

I get the science points from a gaming perspective, they don't hurt my (personal taste in) game or immersion much. The progression, tho, I agree, it's completely ridiculous. I started a new savegame on career hard plus some tweaks (KCT + USI-LS mostly) and I'm getting bored by the grind, and just looking at what I have to unlock to actually get to what I want, which feels totally unrelated to the other parts, doesn't help. There are some better techtrees out there, but unfortunately for me most of them focus too much on mod parts and leave too many empty spaces on a mostly stock install.

Can't seem to find my references, but I'm pretty sure HPL himself either drew or described it once as "a line with five smaller lines branching off of it", or something like that. I'm only slightly familiar with japanese (my father had classes way back then), I knew about the different alphabets and kanji having meanings and kanas being sillabes, but for some reason I thought of them as having some lesser meaning, too. Kinda like Celtic runes (with which I'm only slightly familiar, too). Thanks for the new info

Heh, I honestly thought someone would get the reference The Yellow Sign was created by a writer named Chambers in the 1890's for his collection of short weird horror stories entitled 'The King in Yellow'. The symbol wasn't drawn or described objectively in the book, at best it was "a curious symbol or letter in gold. It was neither Arabic or Chinese, nor as I found afterwards did it belong to any human script" . Lovecraft borrowed a lot from these tales, and they inspired the supernatural cult/killer from True Detective season 1. I had this 'scribble' as part of a drawing once, before I had even read Chambers and possibly Lovecraft.
