Summary Hello! This is my first "mod" (it's just a texture pack). It's an add-on for TextureReplacer that makes the skybox look like it would if you were in the galaxy NGC 5679C, the smallest member of a triplet of galaxies known as NGC 5679 or Arp 274. You can open the spoilers to see what it looks like (it's really something!!). It contains exactly 6 image files and nothing else. The images are 4096x4096, and the mod is 101MB. The images were created with SpaceEngine. In-game screenshots taken: Real image of the NGC 5679 triplet: NGC 5679A and B are purposefully a bit dim-- this is because they would be difficult to see even at night from the naked eye, and because if I made them any brighter, the purplish-blue clouds of NGC 5679C would be too bright. I like it like this anyways-- a subtle skybox that matches the general feel of the stock one while being a lot more interesting, pretty, and high-quality. If people request, I may make a brighter version or a version with different camera settings to make the other members of NGC 5679 more visible. I may also release other skyboxes in the future involving other cool galaxies. It has only been tested on 1.12.5. It may work on versions below it seeing as it is exactly 6 image files, this depends entirely on TextureReplacer. Interactions with other mods This mod must be installed with TextureReplacer. It relies on TextureReplacer and whatever dependencies it may have. Without it, this mod will not work. If you are using Distant Object Enhancement, it is recommended to tweak the dynamic skybox dimming settings, otherwise this skybox may be too dim to appreciate in normal situations. It was designed for use without DOE's dynamic skybox dimming feature enabled. I have no clue what happens if you use this while another mod is also using TextureReplacer to create a custom skybox. Download Github download link here!!! This mod cannot be installed with CKAN because I don't know how to put it on CKAN (though I am interested in trying). It is also not on SpaceDock or CurseForge because I don't know how to put it there either. Currently, the only supported way to install it is a direct download from my Github: https://github.com/LittleBitMoreKSP/NGC-5679-Skybox/releases/tag/release To install, ensure the NGC 5679 Skybox folder is located in GameData so that the structure is GameData > NGC 5679 Skybox > (TextureReplacer, README file, LICENSE file, etc.) Final words The license I chose is CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. SpaceEngine graciously allows me to use its exported images for free for noncommercial uses like this. Therefore, this work and its derivatives must be strictly noncommercial (hence NC and SA). Here's a short summary of how to make a skybox exactly like this (mostly in case I forget later): This is my first time making a mod (even a rudimentary one like this) and releasing it to the public. If you have any recommendations, or if I uploaded it in an unusable state, or if I have accidentally gone against an addon posting rule, please let me know so I can amend it or improve the mod! Thank you!

(I'll teach you how to make that) Introduction This is a step by step guide to creating, exporting, and editing a skybox to make it ready for KSP. I made my first skybox mod the other day and several people wanted me to make a tutorial on how to make skyboxes in Space Engine. I haven't found any other tutorials on the subject so I guess I'm making one. Step 1: Download Space Engine Go here to download the latest version of Space Engine. Space Engine is a free game that simulates the universe. It includes real and procedurally generated stars, nebulae, and galaxies. Step 2: Finding a location in Space Engine You can either fly around (w, a, s, d, to move, q and e to rotate, scroll wheel to change speed, left mouse to pan) or use the search button to search for a specific star, nebula, or galaxy that exists in real life. For this tutorial I will be making a skybox of the Crab Nebula, but you can choose your own location. To go to the location, hit "Go to". Step 3: Positioning Once you've found a location, you will want to position yourself in the place you would like your skybox. I recommend aligning yourself with the galactic plane so it is flat across the center of the screen. You can move inside a nebula as well. Here is what my screen looked like from within the crab nebula: Step 4: Settings There are a lot of different settings in Space Engine. To access settings, press escape -> settings -> graphics. The settings we will be focusing on are overbright and desaturate dim stars. You can play around with other settings, but these 2 settings mainly control how many stars are visible in your skybox. Lower levels of overbright = less visible stars and higher levels of overbright = more visible stars. If you want LOTS of stars in your skybox, 50-60 is a good number for this setting. I also frequently change the overbright setting to get the desired effect. The next setting is desaturate dim stars. Higher values of this setting make all but the brightest stars white and colorless. Lower values of this setting make the dimmest stars have slight color. It's a subtle difference, but personally I prefer to leave this in the lowest setting possible. That way when we edit the image later we get a more colorful skybox. Here are my settings: You can always change these to you liking. Step 5: Exporting Once you have your desired settings, we will export our skybox. Press escape -> editor -> export skybox. In the resolution box, you will put 4096 if you want a 4k skybox, but you can put whatever resolution you want. You should to save it as a .png. Leave the alpha box unchecked. Here is what my export screen looked like: When your ready to export, hit export. This may take a few minutes. Next, navigate to your Space Engine folder. By default (on windows), it is C:\SpaceEngine\export You should have something that looks somewhat like this: You can open up the pictures and see if you're happy with them. If you want to make changes, just go back into space engine, change what you want to, and re-export. WARNING: every new export will override the old files. If you want to keep your exported images, move them to a new folder before exporting again. Step 6: Preparing for KSP To actually change the skybox in KSP, you will need to install the latest version of Texture Replacer Replaced. You can't just put these pictures into KSP yet. First you need to change the names so Texture Replacer can read them. Rename the files as follows: Rename sky_neg_x to GalaxyTex_NegativeX Rename sky_neg_y to GalaxyTex_NegativeY Rename sky_neg_z to GalaxyTex_NegativeZ Rename sky_pos_x to GalaxyTex_PositiveX Rename sky_pos_y to GalaxyTex_PositiveY Rename sky_pos_z to GalaxyTex_PositiveZ Now you should have something that looks like this: Now let's test it. In your KSP folder, navigate to Gamedata -> TextureReplacerReplaced -> default Copy your files into the default folder and boot up KSP! In theory, you now have a beautiful skybox: However, Space Engine isn't perfect and it looks like some of the sides of our skybox are in the wrong place! This happens sometimes when you export from Space Engine. It only seems to happen sometimes, but it isn't hard to fix! In this case, I renamed: GalaxyTex_NegativeY to GalaxyTex_PositiveY and then GalaxyTex_PositiveY to GalaxyTex_NegativeY You may need to move 1 of them out of the folder temporarily because windows doesn't accept 2 files with the same name in the same folder. Then you need to rotate the GalaxyTex_PositiveY. To do this, right click on the picture, click edit with photos, crop and rotate, click rotate twice, done, save. There is some trial and error to get the right rotation with this one. Just rotate, boot up ksp, and try again. Sometimes there will also be seams in your skybox where you can clearly see the edge between 2 sides. The fix for this is re-exporting the skybox from Space Engine. Now let's boot up KSP again! In theory all the sides of you skybox are lined up with no seams. If there are no problems with your skybox so far, you can move onto the next step. Step 7: Photo Editing Now here is where you make your skybox more interesting. You can play around with photo settings to get the desired effect and make your skybox pop! You can use Photoshop or even the default Windows photos app! I will show how to do it in the Windows photos app because I don't have much experience with Photoshop. You will right click the photo and click edit with photos. Then click adjust. There are little arrows next to light and color. Click those to bring down more options. Now here is where you just play around with photo settings. There's no particular guide for this part, just experiment and create something amazing! I do recommend dragging the color slider all the way to the right for a more colorful skybox though. These can make your skybox truly unique. Make sure to use the same adjustments for each photo though, otherwise it will look quite strange. Always keep a copy of the original photos in case you mess up with the adjustments. Step 8: Screenshots and Sharing! Take some screenshots of you complete skybox! If you're feeling up to it, you can release it as a mod on Spacedock, Curse, and The Forums. Make sure to read the add-on posting rules first. Here is the finished product of this tutorial: This skybox will be available for download HERE with my other skyboxes. Thank you for reading! I hope you learned something. I look forward to seeing what you can make! Be sure to post your creations down below! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me in the comments.

About: I wanted to create a skybox for another eye-candy oriented game: I had fun creating one with Space Engine, so I decided to make a few more. This is the result. You need Texture Replacer! DOWNLOADS: NGC 3115 Central Black Hole Album with more images You very rarely see black holes in skyboxes. I decided to give this massive one a shot. This is a real place in the universe: In this skybox, you orbit a star near the Central Black Hole of the galaxy NGC 3115. You can visit it in Space Engine by pressing F3 and searching for the 'Spindle Central Black Hole'. SpaceDock Download Between the Stars This one emphasizes the vast amount of space between the galaxies (Milky Way + Magellanic Clouds). This is a real place in the universe: In this skybox, you orbit a lonely star which ended up in the vast emptiness of space near the Milky Way galaxy. You can visit this place in Space Engine SpaceDock Download SN 1006 Nebula (3 Versions!) Unedited: SpaceDock Download Light: SpaceDock Download Dark: SpaceDock Download As colourful isn't everyone's taste, I included the unedited file and a darker one. This is a real place in the universe: In this skybox, you orbit a star in the SN 1006 nebula (the remnants of a supernova inside the Milky Way galaxy). You can visit this place in Space Engine by pressing F3 and searching for SN 1006. SpaceDock Download Large Magellanic Cloud More pictures: This is a nebula inside the Large Magellanic Cloud. (A nebula inside a big nebula, and you can even see the Milky Way from up here!) This is a real place in the universe: In this skybox, you orbit a star in a nebula inside the Large Magellanic Cloud. You can visit this place in Space Engine Also, this one's a bit rushed. Tell me if something's wrong and needs to be changed. SpaceDock Download Red Spider More Pictures Another great skybox! No spider was harmed in the making of this skybox Spacedock Download More Skyboxes Coming Soon I'm waiting for Space Engine to update to version 0.9.9.0: They are experimenting with volumetric-based nebulas (SO MUCH IMPROVEMENT ) and you can even edit and create your own nebulas!!! In the meantime, I also found out about Spacescape. Now I just need to learn how to use it. You can donate me to buy me coffee so I work faster. (But I unfortunately still have to wait for Space Engine to update) License All Rights Reserved.

This is my first release (and post), so if you run into any problems with the mod then please do let me know. nvS' Milky Way Skybox First skybox I've ever made. If you look carefully, you can see the Andromeda, Triangulum and the dwarf Large Magellanic Cloud and Small Magellanic Cloud galaxies. Note: I have graphical mods installed in these images so the skybox may look a bit different for you. --- Dependencies: Texture Replacer Installation Instructions: Download and install Texture Replacer. Extract the contents of the .zip file provided into your game's main directory. Download: SpaceDock --- Licensing: This mod is under the CC-BY-NC-ND-4.0 license. This means you can't use it for commercial purposes.

Hello people I would like to present to you my Brand New™ skybox, which I've been working on for about 5 hours. Kerbol system now lies in NGC 604 nebula inside Triangulum Galaxy, not far from Andromeda. In fact, you can see it and even spot Milky Way from there. Location found in SpaceEngine. Requires TextureReplacer/SigmaReplacements (or probably any addon that allows changing skyboxes, same with game version, lemme know if works below 1.10) Distributed under Creative Commons BY-NC-ND license Links: TextureReplacer / SigmaReplacements Skybox On Spacedock Installation as usual, drop the unpacked folder into GameData

So I'm running ksp 1.4 with the Making History expansion and the mods; Distant object, EVE, SVE, Kerbal engineer, Planet Shine, Scatterer, and trigger tech(Alarm clock). I'm not sure when It started happening, I just now noticed it, but when I'm standing on the night side of any planets the skybox has no stars. I know that Distant Object mod makes the sky go dark whenever you look at a bright planet or kerbol, but I don't see stars at night. Even looking straight up with a tight FOV. It's really irritating. As a second thing, I was wondering if there is a way to increase the distance at which the Distant object mod shows vehicles beyond 750,000 m? I changed it in the config file but nothing seems to happen.

Skybox repository A lot of you guys still use the same stock skybox, but not knowing that the replacement of the skybox is one of the most simple things to change, plus; it doesn't slow your game down. Just for the real rookies here; a skybox is the universe you see behind your planets, ships etc. Just think of it like this: you play KSP in a giant cube, and all you are looking at, are the 6 faces of the cube which contain stars, colors etc.. The 6 pictures in the download represent the faces and will replace them. The panorama pictures are really showing how your new universe will look like. I know there are a lot of skyboxes you can download for KSP, but I would like to drop my skybox collection here. I'm planning to make this something big, with plenty of skyboxes to choose from. You can also make requests, if you know a cool place/spot in the known universe, give me a name and I will try to look it up and make a skybox from it. I'll begin with this skybox, more are coming this week. This skybox can be quite overwhelming and bright. Other skyboxes while have a bit more darkness of space in it. Added just 2 a few more Install: Make sure you have installed Texture Replacer. Download the images from the link. Place them in ....\Kerbal Space Program\GameData\TextureReplacer\Default ... Profit! 1. Orion Nebula When using this skybox, the solar system will be inside the Orion Nebula section. As long as humans have looked at the sky, they have been aware of the Orion Nebula, it's a celestial feature situated at the south of the Orion's Belt, which is visible with the naked eye. The 'line of stars' on the left is our own milky-way. Download Link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/oy52y93590srwzg/AACclWXDsmyMvOjZChX0gs-Xa?dl=0 2. Supernova remnant Puppis A With this skybox, your solar system will be right inside the remnant of Puppis A. The light of its explosion reached earth approximately 3700 years ago. Puppis A is one of the brightest X-ray sources in the X-ray sky. Its X-ray designation is 2U 0821-42. Normally life wouldn't be possible in this kind of environment, but maybe this explains why the kerbals are so tiny. Download Link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/bh9gwn3n96bzyul/AAD2_bskJToOWOYuLzmSDCala?dl=0 3. Nebula RN 8556-413 Well, nothing fancy to say about this one.. The nebula has a diameter of 26,82 lightyears. It's just a random nebula I've found lost in the massive space. It's also not located in our milkyway, but in the Sombrero Galaxy, located 31 million light years away from Earth. The galaxy has an apparent magnitude of +9.0, making it easily visible with amateur telescopes, and it is considered by some authors to be the brightest galaxy within a radius of 10 megaparsecs of our Milky Way. This skybox is a bit more calming for your kerbals Download Link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ybwizj6nse0ai45/AAAilVkr-jYFX2mGhtOoukiga?dl=0 4. Sombrero Galaxy This one is a bit upcloser into the Sombrero Galaxy. The galaxy that is easy visible in the constellation Virgo. It is named after it shape of a Mexican Sombrero. Through it's size of 50.000 light years, it's only 30% of our Milky way. The Sombrero Galaxy was discovered on May 11, 1781 by Pierre Méchain, who described the object in a May 1783. Download Link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/cy21pg96qvlkdnt/AAD-kre4TVUshLy_3PTs46-aa?dl=0 5. Lagoon Nebula The Lagoon Nebula is a giant interstellar cloud in the constellation Sagittarius. It is classified as an emission nebula. Your location will be right in it. The Lagoon Nebula is estimated to be between 4,000-6,000 light-years from the Earth. In the sky of Earth, it spans 90' by 40', which translates to an actual dimension of 110 by 50 light years. In the background you can see the milky way. Download Link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/upqsp4sr83hpdz6/AABbLvhQDtuazd1y7TmVb2oea?dl=0 For the real skybox seen from earth, I would like to recommend you this mod. I think I'm not going to recreate this, since I don't like stealing someones work. Unless someone requests it to recreate in a different resolution and or inclination. Let me know what you think! This add-on is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License.

Nestled between the gorgeous Flame Nebula and the intimidating Horsehead, is the home planet of the Kerbals. They are a peace loving people, and having just become a space-faring civilization, little do they know that roughly 1200 light years from their beautiful planet Kerbin, lies the home planet of the war mongering species of Man, called Earth. At such a relatively close distance, it’s only a matter of time until the two civilizations come into contact with each other. Can the peace loving Kerbals hold their own when the corporate might of Mankind come knocking with their galactic-class mining ships? The Kerbals have, at least, 1200 years to prepare for that eventuality. For now however, they are happy to look up at the night sky and wonder, “Where the kell did Jebediah hide the Horse’s body?" DOWNLOAD You MUST download TextureReplacer Replaced, if you haven’t already. Download the skybox from SpaceDock or CurseForge. Unpack the ZIP archive and place the GameData folder into your KSP install directory, replacing the original. TECHNICAL INFO The skybox was captured using SpaceEngine 0.9.8. Later, I used 'real' images of the individual objects, from various sources (see full list below), to add more detail. How did I choose which objects to make visible and which ones to ignore? I increased SpaceEngine’s magnitude limit to the 8th (from the default of 7th) and exported the skybox at 4096px resolution. I kept the objects which were visible in the exported images. For example, even though the Eagle nebula is ~3300 ly away, it wasn’t showing inside SpaceEngine, whereas the Lagoon nebula which is farther away at ~5200 ly was visible; probably because the Lagoon is nearly 4 times larger than the Eagle. How ‘realistic’ IS this skybox? The locations of the stars, nebulae and galaxies in the sky are precisely where they should be, at least according to SpaceEngine, but I have taken some artistic liberty with their sizes. For example, the Flame nebula should appear a lot larger, and the Great Carina nebula, a lot smaller, in the sky. My priority was to create something dynamic and intriguing without making it too overwhelming or too unrealistic. As such, I wouldn’t claim the skybox to be a very ‘realistic’ depiction of the sky from that location in space. Not to mention, many of the nebulae and galaxies shouldn’t even be visible. However, I have reduced the brightness of such objects to make them hard to spot. CREDITS and SOURCES There are lots! Please expand the section below to see the full list of credits and sources. All other objects, except the ones exclusively mentioned below, are sourced directly from Space Engine v0.9.8. LICENSE This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) license. Expand the section below, for the details. Closing Notes - Since this is my first attempt at a 'mod' I would love to receive your feedback, even if you hated it! I have more such skyboxes planned for KSP and will update this thread when I am ready to release each of them. Thanks!

Hello, I have been working on a skybox composite using various images, of nebulae and galaxies, from NASA, ESO and other 'free' sources. I was almost ready to release it to the KSP community. However, while compiling all the sources and credits for the images, I found out that NASA and ESO state that the image credit should be visible WITH the images. The way I understood it, that implies that I would have to stick the credits right beside the nebulae and galaxies in the skybox itself. Now THAT, is a big problem, and as you can tell, ABSOLUTELY UNDESIRABLE! I have been working on it for several months now, in between two jobs, and I was looking forward to sharing it with the community. If any of you guys can suggest a way out, I would be so much relieved. (Or please just tell me I got it wrong, because I don't think Rareden's Real Skybox had the same problem.) P.S.: The skybox was initially captured in Space Engine. Later, I used high-res, 'real' images of the visible nebulae and galaxies from various sources to enhance their detail, and realism. P.P.S.: In case if it's of any help, here are all the sources (I would have attached this in the release page AND with the download as well): Thank you for your time, and thank you very much for any help that you can provide.

About: I made several 4k skyboxes in space engine and wanted to share them. Click on each imgur link to see an album with more pictures of each skybox. [NEW] Crab Nebula http://imgur.com/a/KKtQe Download: Spacedock Galactic Core: http://imgur.com/a/xPS24 Download: Spacedock CurseForge Blue Nebula: http://imgur.com/a/uoKV0 Download: Spacedock CurseForge Dark Galaxy: http://imgur.com/a/96WhI Download: Spacedock CurseForge Installation: Download and install Texture Replacer Replaced v0.4 (for ksp 1.3). Download your desired skybox. Merge the gamedata folders. Enjoy! NOTE: If you use Distant Object Enhancement, it darkens the skybox by default. This can make some of the stars and nebulae less visible. It is a fantastic mod, but I recommend disabling the darken skybox option in the config file. That way you keep the bright skybox with all of distant object's great features. If you want to make your own skyboxes, I have a tutorial here. Thank you! License: All Rights Reserved.

Hammer Tech's Skybox v1.1 Bring Kerbin to the Andromeda galaxy! Original work by @Hammer Tech. v1.1 Updated for Texture Replacer Replaced 0.5.1. This breaks compatibility with Texture Replacer 2.4.13. Dependencies Texture Replacer Replaced Downloads SpaceDock License Considering legalities. So, it's finished, but I want to be sure I have the right to do this under licensing and such. Seeing as many textures were just posted with a link to a download, I'm not sure if a license is automatically assumed, or applied at all.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

I'd like some feedbacks and suggestions for this one: (Sorry, this one is adapted on minecraft; Though I think these sky/space-related things is appropriate here in ksp forum) On high altitude(stratosphere ~ mesosphere)

I have made a video tutorial on how to make and add your own custom skyboxes for KSP using texturereplacer in minutes.

I'm hoping to add in additional skybox textures, adding on to the work I've previously done. The problem is that I still don't have a program that can convert this kind of texture into a suitable cube texture for KSP. If you know of any photoshop plugins or external programs (I already have CubeTheSphere but it doesn't convert it correctly) that can turn a texture like this into a cubemap texture, please, please, send it my way. It would make a veteran very happy - Joe
