Squadcast Summary for 2015-04-18 - Picture Perfect Edition!

Those intakes look fantastic! And that Xenon tank might even tempt me into doing more with ion drives!

All in all this looks like a very nice set of changes. Well done Squad, and thanks for listening to us about the round8 tank.

I'd just raise one point about the fairings and the way they separate; the picture makes it look like they break into many parts and separate kinda chaotically. I'd hope that they come away as whole panels and that you get nice, geometrically pleasing separations with all panels moving away at the same rate.

Guys, guys!

The terrain around KSC is not flat anymore.

I hope you've practiced landing in the runway.

Man, Tayler Raiz will have fun trying to land his OV-X and other re-usable launchers now... Looking forward to those dozens of explosions trying to create a new reliable one. :D

It will make it easier to test rovers tho, no need to drive for 5-15min to reach rough terrain.

- - - -

Really looking forward to this update. It's almost perfect.

Let's assume the fairings are fixed, and most of the mem leaks too.

In which case it's only missing Unity5 and electric propellers and any other development would be superfluous for me. :)

(well, ok, and the rest of our solar system analogs as planets... but even that is not that important as there is a good mod for it atm)

I'd missed this news about the runway - check the caption!

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Please dont kill my Hetzer, that thing needs flat ground to hit anything! Guess ill now be forced to make turreted tanks (those have some pivoting capabilities up/down), as tank destroyers are going to become difficult if not impossible to use at least near KSC. Maybee i can still use them near the buildings though.

RIP tank destroyers and anything without a elevating turret on it!

Isn't it just a normal map? Not actual terrain causing the shadows?

It's really hard to tell. If you look at the line between the runway and the surrounding terrain, it *does* look like that line goes up and down with what would be the normal map. Which implies that perhaps it's not a normal map and is instead actual hilly terrain.

However the KSC is so far away that it's hard to tell for sure.

My kerbals has been strictly forbidden to land on runway because all the accidents.

Yes putting an flag at the beginning will make aiming easier, one at the end will be nice if you come in from east and it will also help showing the angle.

For rovers I use the rails from vab to pad for testing, you also have the pad itself for more serious testing.

Normal map on terrain would not make any sense. Maybe only for small details, like when your kerbal stands on it, it would look like there are rocks ans footsteps, etc on it. Why create an illusion of bumpy terrain when you can actually make it bumpy? From this distance, the system they are using, is perfectly capable of presenting the actual look of that terrain. And anyways, if it would be normal map, how do you imagine getting closer to it? It would gradually fade out? Or change to higher resolution bumpmap, constanly confusing your eyes, where you thought there is a hill, there would be only small bumps? :)

Are you guys saying that the terrain near the runway will be bumpy only because you saw some shadows on that screenshot? I may be mistaken, but if that's what you are believing, these images would say otherwise:

Look at the shadows near the runway. It looks like there are some hills near the runway, but there aren't.

No, I'm saying it because the imgur link with the caption that says the terrain around the KSC is no longer flat comes direct from the Maxmaps and KSP twitter accounts.

Thanks. Now I understand the hype. That image description on imgur settles it.

I wouldn't be so sure. I think the caption was made by a player asking the question - would Max use a question mark? Another picture had a caption: "Fairings separation in 1.0 looks weird." I don't think Maxmaps would write that. I will take a wait-and-see approach, but my feeling is the illusion of terrain being rough comes from shadows that are in the texture map.

Who other than Maxmaps could set the image caption in Imgur?

The person who uploaded it. I'm not an Imgur expert so I don't know much, but I see nothing that indicates that that picture was uploaded by Squad. Or anybody else, for that matter.

Imgur U sukc.
