What you think about all those Squad videos clips released with every updates?

I don't care so much about the differences or similarities to an actual launch that killed humans. This would be bad taste even if Challenger never happened.

This isn't the first "Ha ha they died" that's ever been in a KSP video, though it's probably the worst. My big problem was how they all died in terror, right before the fun happy music started.

How often have we seen Tom flying to heaven/falling into hell after being brutally murdered my Jerry - only to laugh about his next mishap minutes later after the commercial?

Serious stuff is serious stuff, but KSP should not be taken to seriously - like any other entertainment medium?

That being said, I would not say no to a second part to the video with a more happy ending either.

One difference, one coincidence. (Unless I'm missing something?)

The crew survives the initial explosion. The crew cabin separates from remaining vehicle. The crew remains alive until being killed when the cabin impacts.

It's very close to what happened to Challenger and her crew.

It is possible Squad did not know the details of the Challenger disaster. I certainly did not know them before reading them in the post above.

If my understanding is correct the Challenger disaster is taught very widely in the US as part of the curriculum - and rightly so; I wish we were taught more about space exploration, including its history, where I grew up. But I am afraid to say in much of the rest of the world peoples' knowledge is more around the level of "there was a shuttle, it blew up". That is not meaning to sound callous, rather to point out that many people would struggle to even tell you the name.

It is possible (and, unless Squad are totally insane, most likely) that this remains a coincidence, albeit a very unfortunate one.

If the video were to play out more like, say, the Nedelin catastrophe would you (generic reader, nobody in particular) even notice the similarites?

This is a game about spaceflight in which things can go wrong, and the promotional vids usually include some sort of mishap or other. Does this one resemble a real incident more or less than the others? That would be hard to quantify. How about we not relieve the gruesome details of this or that event, and go back to talking about the vids in general?

I politely disagree.

Which one?

Soyuz 1 was a parachute failure, but it was on re-entry, with only one cosmonaut. Soyuz 11 was accidental decompression after undocking from Salyut 1. Challenger was an explosion at launch, but it was a spaceplane (the shuttle) and looked totally different. Colombia was a disintegration on re-entry. The Apollo 1 fire was in a rocket, but that was on the pad.

It's a weird cross between Soyuz 1 & Challenger, with a rather different rocket (closer to an Apollo 1 capsule strapped on to a Delta IV Heavy with MOAR BOOSTERS). It's certainly not a re-creation of any real disaster, unless all fictional rockets exploding are to be considered recreations of real disasters.

Still, while it does not recreate any single disaster... simply creating a amalgamation of several disasters... to me was poor taste. I have a pretty dark sense of humor, but the 1.0 trailer gave me a cold feeling. It's different from the trailer that was posted a while back that showed a kerbal compromising his EVA suit in a vacuum just to get a wrench out of his helmet.

THAT made me laugh. It's dark, but it never happened in the real world... and I can't imagine it ever happening.

I suppose that's the difference, Kerbals are "supposed" to be incredibly silly, and intended to invoke a response of... well... laughter... if some mishap befalls them. But with the 1.0 trailer referencing true-to-life catastrophic failures... well, I wasn't laughing.

The astronaut selection process trailer was very well done, ARM trailer was great, but honestly... the trailer that I still enjoy watching from time to time is the .22 gameplay...

So well done that :)
