Kerbin Circumnavigation 1.0.4/1.0.5 - Aviator Challenge Continuation

Recommended Posts

Oh, I wasn't loosing parts. There were no parts left after the crash. :P Just thought i would share my epic fail after 13 hours sitting at my computer. lol

Don't worry, I'm making an even bigger/slower plane for my next attempt. But some sleep first.

Okay, hope this time counts.

I was coming in to steep so I had to do a flyby.

1 Circumnavigation (almost two with sheer distance)

5 Hours 19 mins 50 secs

Things I hope I don't disqualified for:

I had pizza while flying.

Jumbo jets require air but they don't show it in the resources tab.

The plane stop 1.7 kms away from the end of the runway. Then I taxied it to the KSC.

BTW: Is this the biggest entry, and if so, can i get a special award. :P

Yup, this one counts. You get your free pass on the landing situation though.

If you want big entries, go see noname117. He has some pretty weird stuff... But wait, what's this? You had Pizza? And you didn't share any!?

Unfortunately I don't have a super awesome reward for anyone who takes a long time and has a flying warehouse in the sky. Maybe I could do that. "Die-Hard circumnavigator. Total mission time > 5 hours" I guess this will have to do for now:

Since 1.0.5 brought about the new thermals, I guess it's time for a new submission.

Introducing the KART - Kerbin Aerial Rapid Transport , able to round the planet in in only 54 minutes and 23 seconds, enough time to have breakfast and come back for... brunch?

Proving once again that pretty and fast are still able to exist in harmony in this challenge, I suppose :D

Now if ONLY someone could support you by making a flying battleship.

Well at best it qualifies as a flying escorting fighter with no ammunition. Now I think I'm going to have to call to nearest 3D printing company to print more badges.

Wasn't a good choice getting a 1-time shipment:  circumnavigator%2Bresized%2Bvelocity.png

Well, if you want it armed, I can definitely facilitate for that, no extra cost at that. I'm thinking rapid response / recon, light but what it has will mess you up (cruise missiles / JDAMs or a couple AMRAAMs for long range AA engagements).

Wait, refueling is allowed?  Holy smokes, that changes *everything*.  That means I could park a bunch of refueling craft next to the runway, launch the real craft, go around half a dozen times, come down for a low pass, start up a refueling plane, etc...  This means I'd only be limited by the number of fuel planes and my own patience!

You could if you wanted to. Good luck though, you'll need it. If this becomes something that is actually attempted, I will be adding a new rule that will make doing this very irritating.

I decided to try my hand at the challenge with the JP-C Lance I made, managed to get one circumnavigation in just under an hour and land right back on the runway! I used Pilot Assistant, as I saw other had done so and didn't see that it was against the rules. This was my first real delve into atmospheric flight without leaving to orbit, so it was interesting!

I enter my "Frostburn MKII" plane and myself to the Circumnavigator challenge. It managed to go around Kerbin 1 time, haveing 4 Kerbals aboard. Total flight time was 1 h and 30 minutes. It landed on 0 fuel... but it's a plane, and nobody said anything that gliding the last few meters is forbidden :D

Find the pictures at imgur and staying true to my very own style of entering challenges. There is a video as well. The major flight has been speed up to 15 times regular speed, but I suggest to watch the landing, as it is... rather interesting :D

See you in the next challenge! Fly safe, and walk away from your landings!

Originally, I made this "plane" for this challenge by @Geschosskopf. Unfortunately, I didn't make it all around in one go. Some say Nicole Kerman had to land because she had to go for little kerbals, others blame a mysterious force called RL. So technically, it doesn't qualify for this challenge, but I thought I'd enter it anyway. This is a great challenge and maybe there's somebody crazy persevering enough to make it in one leg.

Well needless to say this is one of the silliest things I've seen in quite a while. At least you get an honourable mention as "most crazy insane whacked out 'original'" Yeah we'll go with that...

The plane design totally looks like something Japan would build. Look up I-400 if you don't get it.

No argument here, cinematics can be important. I remember doing that on my Eve Rocks entry [still looks cool]

Now presenting: The sausage plane circumnavigation badge [I wish I had one of the former]

[Why is everyone building cruise missiles?]

Whatever the answer, it appears you managed the velocity badge by a slim margin. I wonder how toasty the cockpit gets in there; certainly enough to warm some toast.

Roast or toast, at least you now boast a badge.

Hey Xannari....

Chemp did something amazing and AFAIK unprecedented in KSP history---a Kerbal-powered aerial circumnavigation.  That's no trivial task.  He deserves the sort of recognition Wooks got for being probably the 1st to drive a rover all around Kerbin.  Sadly, Chemp's flight wasn't non-stop so it doesn't quite fit the rules of either of our challenges (although his earlier, shorter sortie did satisfy my rules).  Maybe we could come up with some special joint award/patch for this flight, other than just honorable mention in both?

And @Chemp , there's a challenge about doing something that's never been done before.  You certainly qualify.

You know what guys? I'll do the challenge again, featuring "the Flying Board IV", all aound Kerbin and land on the abandoned airfield.

I want to do things properly, no half-@$€|) attempt that doesn't really qualify for either. I had a lot of fun doing it the first time, so I don't mind at all doing it again. Maybe I'll even remember to hit F3 this time around. :D

OK, but before you do that, enter your 1st flight in the "Do Something Nobody Has Done Before" challenge, because your 2nd Kerbal-powered circumnavigation won't qualify for that one except as the 1st non-stop flight of that kind :D

Thanks for the hint, will do that. There's some crazy stuff in that thread...

I might try the non-stop flight as soon as tomorrow, let's see if I find the time. Unfortunately, it has to be done in one single session, as trying to quickload will make the plane disappear.

Thanks for the badge, I've just added it to my signature. I did look up I-400 but, it only shows me submarines on google... maybe my google is broken :D

Not sure if I did mention why that plane hat radiators, but being derived from my SSTO and that I planed to fly this plane with > 1.000 m/s for some time. I needed a way to get the heat away from vital parts. I think the landing shows nicely how warm the radiators are, and the rest stays cool to the touch.

Ok, so I'm going to announce my next circumnavigation attempt today. The stream is intended for tomorrow (Sunday, Jan,31) on my twitch channel starting at 1:00pm central (US) time. The goal will be to again set the record for lowest aerial circumnavigation attempted, with the currently planned maximum ceiling being at 800 meters (though I am considering reducing this down to 500 or perhaps even lower).

Now today (at about this time) I will also be livestreaming. This livestream will be for the purpose of testing the craft and the feasibility of circumnavigating at different altitudes. Giving the aircraft a nickname and deciding the kerbals who will fly it are also high priority for this stream. This will mostly be a preparation stream for tomorrow.

My twitch channel can be found here: http://www.twitch.tv/noname117spore

Below is a picture of the aircraft I plan on flying, the NAM-1-D3:

+CjivgM5.jpg

EDIT: Unfortunately, because of several scheduling issues, I've decided to postpone the stream for Friday, Feb. 5th starting at 2pm central (with the actual circumnavigation starting at 3pm). I hope to see you there for that one.
