KSP being "mundane"

Mundane: from Late Latin mundanus, from Latin mundus‎(“world”).

I'm aware that's not the intention of someone who used such word, but mundane means "pertaining to this world". Since I don't believe in god or anything else that's out of this world (for a large concept of world), and since I think this world is awesome, mundane to me is a compliment.

But it's not an article.  That's like saying that a trailer is the entirety of a movie or a syllabus handed out on the first day of class is the same as attending every lecture.

If you went to the theater and they showed you a trailer for the movie you thought you were going to see, calling it a crappy movie seems pretty accurate. Same with a professor who just tossed you the syllabus before checking out for the remainder of the term (which I've heard is pretty close to what happens sometimes).

But we're arguing semantics and I'll stop that now as it'll get us nowhere.

Idk, after launching a few hundred rockets to orbit in a day and sending them everywhere in the system, doing that act is, for lack of a better word - mundane. Doesn't mean it isn't fun or awesome anymore. It just simply become a part of life, as normal as driving. I really wish one day space flight becomes mundane.

All I'm saying is not to judge the whole of the work by simply reading the introduction to it.  Actually listen to the story, then rip it apart, if deserved.  You have no reason to say the the theater only showed the trailer if you leave before they play the movie, or that the prof. gave you nothing more than the syllabus if you refuse to go to the classes.

TV: "Tonight's news: Moscow in flames, missiles headed for New York.  Full story at 11:00."

Me: "Well, that sucked.  There was hardly any information in that news story."

Yes, it's not much of an article. "Article" is a stretch actually.

I am confused as to whether we are commenting on the article or the context of the article.  Either way it makes for a good discussion.

It's an introduction to a 13 minute radio broadcast. Aside from that, consider it an article written by somebody who knows (or is supposed to) about communication but nothing about KSP or video games (aka a journalist). And in that universe headlines need to draw in crowds, not be 100% correct, hence the dropping of the word "seemingly".

Keep in mind that for most news sites, a title like "Did Putin disband Roscosmos based on playing KSP?" (answer: no) would have been just fine.

Well, I am listening to the link as I write this reply. I think that they are bashing more on the euro-truck game because that is actual real time. And space travel does take a long time but KSP has this rather convenient thing called time warp. Also it says that these games are "what someone else's regular jobs is". this applies to farm and truck simulators but when was the last time someone made a jet pack or flew to mars or mercury or anything along those lines. All we have done has landed someone on the moon. But KSP allows those that feel so inclined to do these things and to explore our solar system in a way that we as a race have yet to be able to. So this odd feminine voice dissing on this game obviously isn't into the things the people that play this game are. It's like why Christians don't really understand why the cow is so holy to Hindus. That is a poor analogy but it's the best I can think of.

Now that you called my attention it, I listened to the broadcast. It wasn't half bad. Though I felt like Hermione probably did on the Muggle Studies classes - it's interesting to see how outsiders see a subculture you are a part of, but you won't really hear anything new.

That "Article" is just a sort of introduction to the radio clip. The first line of the clip is "All the most popular games are experiences of pure fantasy." followed shortly thereafter by "But a growing trend is games that are highly realistic, and that includes all the tedium and difficulties that go along with real life."

I think that's a fair description for KSP. Well over 1000 hours in, a lot of the shine has worn off on things that have become routine, and let's face it, there's not a lot one can do to make that 8 day trip to Minmus more exciting so we just warp through it or go run other missions. This does not diminish it's entertainment value if you happen to be interested in space exploration.

If one was only interested in warp drives and pew pew lazors, KSP would be boring.

I should probably put a 3.75m heatshield on the bottom of this post.

Edit: Perhaps it's a more interesting comment on our culture that a Space Program is considered an every day common thing.

Mundane is awesome..

Right now im on a bus, headed home 2 hours 35 minutes home.. As the bus works her way towards the train station.. My mind is filled by KSP

How to overcome challenges.. A novel coupling for locomotives and wagons that works so well in my head right now I cant wait to get home and try it

Not actually docking so the cockpit view kraken stays away but then facing the reality that if it works ill have an unbreaked heavy train behind my locomotive..with each wagon being its own entity

Challenge two is thinking how to link 2 KOS cores so I can have a gaurdsvan (caboose?) apply her brakes at the rear of the train in sync with the loco to prevent nasty things on hills

The next realisation being each train will then require a shunter crew to manually connect each wagon.. Increasing realism to pure mundane awesomeness

The goal? If it works... Drive hours on the surface of kerbin with an unbraked 6 car train with additional gaurdsvan

Shoot nothing.. Kill only kerbals accidently and generally enjoy friday night post work kerbal time as I wind down from a long work week..

Mundane overload

But.. I Love it

Do I have other games? Yup!

But its KSPs flexability to be as mundane as you like..or not that makes it great

I had an xbox360 not long back..

It put me to sleep alot..

And it definately didnt occupy my thoughts.. KSP has a presence that many games do not and could only wish to have

Well, if you consider that people are so used to instant gratification, gain without pain, games holding your hand all the time and other tropes of modern games, it makes sense to consider a game like KSP "mundane".

There's not much action happening in it, you spend most of the time contemplating stuff or doing micromanagement similar to RTS games. Some things take a considerable amount of time (even with time warp) and can't be sped up using money. Yet, the game is something that anyone can play with little to no knowledge of astronomy at all (unlike flight simulators or Orbiter).

Or maybe it's the average modern gamer that is mundane and not KSP?
