First ever piston engine with a working ignition system!

Criminally overlooked I'd say, but that is now redressed by being the Spacecraft Exchange's TOTM for May!

Thanks mate! My second stickie! Wow!

Maybe because there is no Download or video just a GIF.

Any chance of either of those Azimech?

I'm in the process of rewriting the ignition system to work faster, I want to replace the bearings and maybe even create some custom parts in Unity, in the end a complete mod. What I did is impossible to do in stock. The engine in the GIF doesn't exist anymore. Be patient, I'll build a better one before the end of May :-)

Yeah def impossible in stock. I just want to see it working.

Hello Azimech!

Long time lurker, first time poster. I made an account just now so I could say, WOW! great work!!

Question, have u ever used the program "Algodoo" it is a 2d physics simulator and u can build stuff like your engine in it. just wondering. seeing it in 3d is way cool!

A 4 stroke could be achieved with a simple timing gear with a ratio of 2:1 BTW

I have built transmissions in algodoo and understand their operation. PM me if this is an avenue you would like to explore, I would love to help out

Also, how about a radial engine like in your avatar? they were commonly used in piston aircraft, as I'm sure you are aware.

once again, good job!

Hi! Welcome to the forum! I feel honoured my creation made you make an account!

Yes, I've experimented with Algodoo, it has potential but it seems the devs have largely abandoned it and concentrated on the 3D & professional application.
I'd like a part of KSP - or a new product - to turn in a similar direction but focused on easy to build and playful like KSP itself.

Right now I'm studying joints & materials in Unity to find an implementation that works better for piston engines, transmissions and car suspensions/wheels than the current stock KSP physics and the cumbersome wheelcolliders.

Here's a radial I've built in 2014 ... not running on it's own power. Something surely to happen in the future!

Hey, @Azimech, will this sensor be able to detect kerbals?  Or the ground?  I already have loads of ideas for this. :)

Unfortunately, no. The system works with alternating rays of heat and cold, these touch the parts with the resource converter with a very narrow temperature range, enabling or disabling them. Without coding in C# this is the best I can do with the stock modules.

Now that I've solved my problem with Unity 5 and the new part tools (don't use your projects in the dropbox folder with sync enabled) I can start learning to use monodevelop.

Okay.  But I still have plenty of ideas.

Yeah ... me too!

And the sensors are the first building block for something even better: a mod to give users the ability to build electronic circuits in a virtual reality.

I have an Idea!!!!!  Make a rotary engine based off of this, then use procedural wings (or stock wings) to actually make a propeller!!!!! And make it all lying in such a way that the propeller is facing upwards, increase the power.... & bam!!! Helicopter!!!

1. holy hell rotary engines are hard

2. Look up KSP turboprops. That sort of thing has already happened

3. Stock helicopters that work with rotors have, in fact, happened. Look at Azimech's Stock 1.1 Turboprops and Helicopters.

Update. Building the colliders for the cylinder was a hell but they're okay now. Building multiple cylinder engines is much easier now. Cylinder head is making nice progress. New ignition needs more adjustment. Unsure which method I'm going to use for the valves. Engines are still too big but already much smaller. Piston is 50x50x30cm.

Incredible seems to be the norm for your builds and here it is again.....incredible! Is it producing any torque?

Not enough :-)
A future version will have a longer stroke and a lot more cylinders, good for torque.
