@Green Baron, that's awesome! The mountains behind my house do that sometimes, and now I know what it's called... learn something new every day :D .

My kids call it a cloud waterfall.

I love these flashes of the mind as well. That's better than any drug can give us :-)

Foehn: You need a mountain ridge and steady winds that bring somewhat moist air. The air is forced to climb when it hits the ridge (and there is no or little way around) and cools accordingly at the dry adiabatic gradient of around 1K/100m. When it comes to the dew point it condensates to clouds. When it has to climb further than the dew point it will start to rain out, cooling only wet adiabatic at 0.65K/100m. When it flows over the ridge it will start to sink, but because the air now has lost a lot of water it will gain temperature at the dry adiabatic gradient of 1K/100m and clouds will dissolve quickly. Thus the air is dry and clear. On the leeside in and after the "cloudfall" there often are high windspeeds and gusts because the air gains a lot of energy on it's way down ..until it hits a layer of warm ground air or it is strong enough to move the ground-air layer away.

Islands like the Canaries or Hawaii lie in the tradewind-zones with steady NE-winds, so they have a wet, lush green side and a dry, arid SW-side. Which is the right side to mount a telescope :-)

Hi,

i did a few timelapses and will experiment more. But where to put them ? Youtube just no. I tried vimeo but the upload simply didn't work. Imgur doesn't accept clips (yet ?). Doesn one of you know of any serious hoster for video clips ? I wouldn't like the clips to be put between slippery content ...

One of the themes I work on is walkers lost in a large landscape picture.  I have experimented with dog walkers on the beach at Whitmore Bay quite a bit for this.  I will probably show more in a future post.

@Kokoro: ever tried hdr's in backlight conditions ? The graphical things have their own appeal, no question ...

Foehn Wall Video, DSLR, 330 frames, converted to video with ImagesToVideo.

Hope the link works ...

Link works great. Next time I have one that merits filming I'll make a vid and post it. Other than the mountains being smaller in your vid, that is strikingly similar to the view from my house looking south---of course it's rather more brown and less green than that (we only get ~20-25cm rain per year).

Hmm, a photos thread. Maybe I'll jump into this one too.

I'm in kind of a miserable, downcast mood, so here's a few photos of mine that fit said mood.

First, the DC Metro back in 2011. Unlike many that live and work in the District, I've always found the Metro to be very reliable and useful. I may be part of the problem though, since I only ever use it as a tourist while visiting family in Southern Maryland. Even if it only works 50% of the time that'd be more than we have here in H-town.

Next is our Houston Lightrail in 2012. There's always been something film-noirish about parts of downtown Houston to me, and the Reflecting Pool at Main Street Square feels like the epicenter of grim and grit. Especially on a dreary, drizzly, hot, humid June day.

Moving a good bit further north, we find the West Virginia University PRT system on an August day before the start of school, also in 2012. Not quite as dreary, though still overcast. Because of course it was.

The ever-advancing march of decay has found this old railroad branch in the hills of the same downtrodden state, this time in April of 2013. Lots of abandoned rail these days, most of it to never be used again.

And to finish things off, here's a storm that tore up what was going to be a nice night of star-field photography.

I don't actually take that many photos anymore, for a multitude of reasons that I won't get into here. Maybe I'll share a few more later when I'm not in such a dark and colorless mood.

Cheers.

Sorry, that's a scan of a transparency. K1000, think it was the 110 glass, I'd have to check if it's kodachrome or ectachrome. The mountain behind my buddy is Annapurna (South Face).
