He was a teacher who tought astrophysicics I think. He had a television show where he tought people about the cosmos.

He was a major proponent of science and skepticism.  His life mission was to bring science to the masses.

I have a book from Mr. Sagan in my library, "The Comet", a nice explanation of chemistry of the content in the Oort cloud and other objects in our Solar system. Intriguing stuff.
From the early 80`s, i got hooked in Childhood with such lecture. I would like to build miningmachines and refinerys for other planets, but i guess i was born way to early for such tasks .

He's also the author of Contact, that the movie was based on, and was Neil DeGrasse Tyson's mentor.

Perhaps most importantly he was the creator and host of Cosmos: A Personal Voyage.  A most excellent series.  I remember it very fondly.

Carl Sagan's Cosmos series is also what introduced me to Vangelis.  His music is what is being played in the background of this video (he also did the soundtrack for Blade Runner, Chariots of Fire, and other films).  Here's the entire piece (Heaven and Hell, Pt. I), including the second half featuring vocals from Jon Anderson, former vocalist for Yes.  I've set the link to start at the relevant part, that was used as the theme music for Cosmos (the entire piece is around 22 minutes long):
