How is it done? Tell me, O great teacher!

I found it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/comments/18joaq/how_do_you_get_the_delta_symbol_on_a_windows/

Go to the Command Prompt, and enter this sequence:

reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Input Method" /v EnableHexNumpad /t REG_SZ /d 1

Then, log off and log back on.

Open a text editor. It can even be this forum.

Hold [ALT] and [NUMPAD +] and type '0394' on the keypad.

My SOSE teacher collapsed about 10 minutes ago, and we are all standing out in the hallway while some other staff help her. What a way to start a Friday morning...

SOSE?

Today I found out that I don't know anything about my handedness.

I'm between cross-dominant and ambidextrous, neither one seems to describe it correctly. There are some things I'm cross dominant in, like writing with my right hand, but throwing with my left, and then there are things like sawing that I can do equally terribly with both hands...

So a little while back, this happened...

...well I finally got around to fixing it today. This is a proper weld!

sbjjrPb.jpg

Actually, it's a pretty lousy weld, covering up an even uglier mess from when I had the wrong wire in the machine and couldn't figure out why it was spitting molten BBs everywhere except where I needed them. I hadn't actually welded anything in a couple years, so I'm a bit rusty.

But that sumgun is not gonna break there again!

It'll probably break somewhere else instead that will be a much bigger pain to fix.

Tried Morris dancing for the first time. And belly dancing, but the most you could say about that is that I’ve got the belly with vague aspirations to the ‘dancing’ part.

I got a mount for attaching a phone to pretty much any viewing lens, so I should be able to contribute a few nice space photos. It's cloudy right now, though, so I tested it on my microscope. Here's a picture of a spider trapped in amber:tLJpfEj.jpg

The spider's body is about 2 mm long.

For the last 2 days or so I went backpacking for the first time. Now my feet, shoulders, and hip all are sore and I probably came back smelling like a mess. Pizza afterwards was glorious though. And ice cream. No one died though from the group so that's nice too.

Just be careful okay. I've seen how this goes - it starts with 'ooooh' and 'aaaaahhh' and ends with screaming and running.

Had EPIC lightning storm at the weekend (London, UK), it was intense for any storm in any country LET ALONE quiet ol'blighty.

For a period of about 2 hours we had heavy bolts of lightning roughly every second or so and the roll of thunder was a continuous roar without gaps.

This is extremely unusual for the UK and was much more intense than even large storms I have experienced in more thunder-prone areas like France or Canada.

My brother came to visit this weekend. We're very different people, diametrically opposed in almost every way, and for many years we just haven't gotten along very well. But he came out for a visit over the long weekend. We talked about a lot of stuff, got to understand each other more, he got to know my kids and they got to know him. It was a good weekend. :)

I had 4 days to kill, so I went on a spontaneous nerd pilgrimage to New Mexico. I always thought of the desert southwest as it's portrayed in the old roadrunner cartoons, but New Mexico turned out to be the most visually stunning place I've ever been to. The entire region is an ancient volcano, with the random and chaotic geology that accompanies it. That, coupled with the odd flora that thrives there, creates an atmosphere of a field trip to an alien planet.

Setting aside the standard "road trip" points of interest, we saw...

-Los Alamos history museum. https://www.losalamoshistory.org/exhibits.html

-Bradbury Science Museum. http://www.lanl.gov/museum/

-VLA Radio Observatory http://www.vla.nrao.edu/

-Trinity site historic marker (no website available)

-Valley of Fires; the largest volcanic deposit in North America https://www.recreation.gov/recreationalAreaDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&recAreaId=1803#

-White Sands National Monument; the largest gypsum deposit on the planet. Hundreds of square miles of pristine white sand dunes set against vibrant purple mountains and a vivid blue sky. https://www.nps.gov/whsa/index.htm

-The New Mexico Museum of Space History http://www.nmspacemuseum.org/

*EDIT* How could I have forgotten the stop at Kenefick Park in Omaha?? The largest, most powerful steam engine in the world (Union Pacific "Big Boy") sitting next to the most powerful locomotive ever built; the U.P. Wasatch turbine? It was a busy weekend... :D

It was a science nerd's dream!

Best,
-Slashy

Crap, @GoSlash27, I would've happily given you some other places to visit (or to eat!) along the way, or even met you for lunch or something (you spent most time in the south, but you drove past on your way to the Bradbury).

The Trinity Site is only open to actually visit twice a year (it's on base). The first Saturday in April, and the first Saturday in October.

Next time you're that far south, hit Carlsbad Caverns.

Funny, my boss did the same thing.  Took Friday off just so they could drive out to New Mexico to see what they could see.

tater,

Yeah, we would've loved to meet you. They want to go back, so we can meet up next time. It would've been amazing to visit the Trinity site and Mcdonald ranch, but as you said they're only open 2 days a year. We hit up the historic marker on 380 and visited the little rock shop up the road. A couple very interesting characters with 2 friendly cats. And of course trinitite, which my son had to own.

If you live up in Los Alamos, I'm seriously jealous. Those mountains are jaw- droppingly beautiful!

 Best,
-Slashy
