Oh hey, it's the "finish the tree, finish the game" meme again. I love it.

Career is a mess. Making the science points the only available thing to unlock the tree was a horrible decision. The career needs to be redone first. Only then I will be able to mentally accept any kind of story mode.

But I'd rather see a story mode in a sequel game which would be based around airplanes.

You know, I don`t think I`ve heard you say career is a mess and how much you would like an aeroplane game before...

Idk. Ive got one story. But I'm well known. Is that enough?

It might be... I'm not sure. Again, that wasn't my real point.... my point was to try and get to you to stop procrastinating... who cares what anyone else thinks? If you want to write, then write!  And let the chips fall where they may.

@Just Jim, @ZooNamedGames, it doesn't take a genius or a fanbase to write a storyline for KSP. Sorry. SQUAD could have done it six times over, if they'd wanted to. It could have mirrored a human space program, given the characters (like Gene and Wernher) who are already in it. It could have had to do with linking the monoliths and other anomalies in some kind of SETI, as I think was @NovaSilisko's baby back in the day. It could have been anything, really.

I think what the OP really wants to know in this poll is whether or not any of the rest of us think the lack of a storyline is a bad thing. Me, I think it's a good thing, but opinions vary.

And yeah, this question does come up all the time, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth talking about IMO.

True... and IMO, I'm against a storyline as well. If they had one, we fan-fic authors would be out of a job... lol.... :)

Hrmmm... this is the kind of thing that puts me off. Is it WORTH it?!

No. It really isn't.

Now, if you realize that and decide to go ahead anyway, you just might be a writer after all. May I offer you a link to this lovely thread where we talk about such things all the time?

I'm a writer. I'm just a terribly procrastinate writer. There's only so many times I can post 'But I don't wanna write this' before someone tells me 'man up and do it already!'.

Ironically I'd like to be a writer for my own video games but I've already delved into how people don't like listening to an 'idea guy' and I struggle learning coding and that whole aspect.

Gentlemen, I believe we are drifting off the topic of this thread, let's try not to do that thanks :)

I personally feel that career and even Science modes should have a great unknown to find that acts as a focus for your space program, and leads to an endgame event, with the tech tree being a means to that end, not the end itself, with the option to continue playing of course.

Sandbox should remain as just that, a canvas where we can tell our stories.

I don't think a 'story' in the sense of a set series of contracts or missions in linear progression would be appropriate for anything other than a structured tutorial.  When I played a single player CoD campaign it just felt like I was watching a movie rather than playing a game as I had no real choice what to do or where to go.

Sets of 'linked' contracts that follow a sensible pattern, like exploring the Mun...  first with orbiting probes then landing probes then crewed missions etc.  That generate a 'story' of sorts as the player does the contracts how they want makes sense to me.  And of course there is no reason why several of these sets of contracts couldn't be run in parallel.

If Squad released an 'official' back story,  either as a new 'prequel' game or just as a background as to how and why the Kerbals reach the point they are at the start of a new career save, then that to me would be different, and probably quite fun.

I see you are paring the message down to the core elements. It`s a work in progress it seems

One way of getting your kerbal aeroplane game would be KSP having the ability to do something like a total conversion mod. RO on steroids.

Career would be sorted out the same way, but only with the ability for modders to access those parts of the game.

A story would be a minor thing to implement then. All the stories...

There's the Giving Aircraft a Purpose career mod that kind of does that, having something like a mix of KSP and Simpleplanes would be fun though.
