My stupid metered internet connection has run out. 5 days left...

I feel your pain. Cable internet is a half mile away. They tell us there are not enough potential customers on our road to justify coming our way. Our phone lines will not support DSL - dial up only - they have zero plans of ever upgrading, so no one on our road even has a land line any more. Satellite internet is slow and glitchy but it is the best we can do without going completely broke. 10GB sounded like a lot. It isn't.

I've been on satellite.  It was terrible.  Slow (They of course advertised blazing fast 1.5Mbps).  Also metered to 512MB a day.  At least it was a daily meter.  I believe the meter was shut off between like 3 and 5 in the morning (or something like that).  Shared between 4 people, that gets eaten up fast.

Of course it wouldn't work when there were clouds in the sky either.

Just to really rub salt in the wound, it cost twice as much as cable, and we had to buy their special equipment, which was a $200 modem.

The only reason satellite ISPs exist is because they thrive on the desperate.

I am one of those as well (20GB/month for 50 funds). I live in a rural area on the western flanks of La Palma island. The villages have DSL and the town even (since this year !) a fibre-optic connection via sea-cable to the mainland.

There is a new offer, terrestrial Internet up to a central antenna, from there over the valley to dishes at the households. I tried it for 2 weeks, then switched back to satellite. Page generation is much master but bandwidth for downloads were even worse than satellite and fluctuating. Also their router switched IP addresses every now and then which interrupted downloads.

Via satellite it sometimes takes half a minute for a complex page, mostly waiting for timeouts. Fortunately i could rent the dish for a few (like 3 or so) funds/month.

It's a drag and a perfect reason to complain about.

It isn't always fun here in civilization, either. Our DSL provider here in our corner of Arizona (I won't mention any names, but their initials are CenturyLink) sucks. We're constantly going through periods, usually the times you would expect high traffic, like in the evenings and on weekends, where we're constantly getting dropped. We'll be up for fifteen minutes, then down for two minutes, then up for ten minutes, then down for five minutes. It goes like that for hours. It's maddening. Calling tech support is useless. "We show no outages in your area. Try powering off your router and powering it back on." Etc. If I had to guess, I would say that they are seriously over-subscribed in our area. The subdivision we live in is off the beaten path, and they are building new homes here like crazy. So I'm guessing that CenturyLink's lines are overtaxed and they're round-robining subscribers off to keep things from completely falling apart. Irritating. I hear the local cable provider has much better reliability, but they have data caps. Not good for a cable-cut streaming household. I think we're going to switch to the local point-to-point wireless provider. Way more expensive, but from what I hear they're worth it.

I'm a peace loving guy, but every time I hear that I want to reach through the phone and pound the slob on the other end.

Exactly what an on site tech told me on one visit

My son has this. It costs him twice what I'm paying (and I pay at least twice what cable charges around here), however he has unlimited data and a gaming connection. You don't online game with satellite.

I tried once, for giggles.  Left 4 Dead was really interesting with a 900ms ping.

I picture it much like the shooter games my sons tried to teach me. They would shoot me. Run to where they knew my character would regenerate. Then shoot me in the head again. Yeah, I suppose it was fun for them.

You don't online game with satellites. Please don't remind me. I bought elite:dangerous at my grandma's house and was hooked after ~200 hours. I couldn't play at home and have since not played much PC games due to this (KSP as an exception). I guess my 3DS does deserve some love.

Trying to correlate the scale used on screen for the KSP Atmosphere meter, and the actual numeric scale displayed on the meter...
The onscreen meter shows 9 equally divisible sections (the number of sub ticks is kinda irrelevant)... to display 7 orders of magnitude (1 Atmosphere ASL through 1µ Atm)...

Seriously... Of course the game would handle atmosphere on 7 orders of magnitude. That's a nice, divisible number! Oh... We're gonna divide it by NINE on screen!

Thanks absolutely logical atmosphere display, which can never, ever correlate between numeric value and the tick marks shown on screen. Now I will have to have my physical analog meter use different tick divisions than the onscreen meter. Ugh... Whyyyyyy!

Today i missed a class. It was not really a lesson, its bassicly a place where you are supposed to plan your day, it cost us 20 minutes. I overslept so now and i have detention for 40 minutes (If its 60 or 80, wich might be possible i will rant out loud) here is where the rant about the Daystart (that what im going to call that class thing). Begins:

Spoiler

At Daystart we have 20 minutes to plan our day in a Learning Portal (we use ipads at school). We have a Daystart everyday. I still don't get why its so important, i can litterly plan my ENTIRE WEEK in just under 10 minutes, and i actually did do that, my week is fully planned and Daystart is useless for the rest of the week. You may say extra working time is a good excuse but if daystart dropped, you would still have 20 minutes of free time to do your work. There is no such thing as Extra Time. And now i have DETENTION FOR 40+ MINUTES, because i missed a COMPLETELY USELESS CLASS. Also, i have detention during an extra long break because our PE is probably sick and we got 80 minutes of free time now, and all detention is is sitting in a room with a teacher (Hopefully). Im going to mail the Principal or something, its kinda nope.

Tell the retailers that have been selling Christmas stuff since August that.

I know. We were at the Chandler Mall last week and they already had their Christmas decorations up. It's going to get to the point where they just never take them down.

I will say that the greatest thing I saw this month was Halloween and Christmas decorations up at the same time. I love it. Although Christmas does start too early...

After thanksgiving, you can do all the Christmas you desire. Until then, hold your horses

Not much to complain about apart from the weather.

-5C, snow is coming down, predicting 5 cm by morning. Roads were starting to freeze over from the rain and thaw this afternoon.

My morning commute is going to suck.

I cant get enough christmas period, I wish more people wanted it to last longer :(

Christmas is a mixed bag for me. I like the getting together with family, the traditions, etc. The buy-buy-buy, gimmie-gimmie-gimmie, the mass commercialism, the running around like a chicken with its head cut off, that I can live without.

Saves Manpower and money.... tucker up all decorations and if somebody complains your perfect answer is "it is shortly through"  (till + 6 month) or "shortly up" (from - 6 month)....
