SpaceX Discussion Thread

It wasn't entirely smooth: one of the chines looked ripped open at the bottom and there was that internal fire next to the trapezoid holding the flight propellant-loading hardware (that's now out thanks to the CO2 fire-suppression), but they caught it!

AAAH

THEY CAUGHT IT

Best of all, now they get to examine it and discover what needs to be fixed.

My memories of Apollo exist, but are vague. I remember the event of Apollo 11 (family came over cause we had the best TV). I of course remember Shuttle, also amazing... this takes the cake so far though (booster landing). Insane.

How many times will the whole industry go "eeerm what you are proposing is simply not possible" only for Spacex to nail it as they described that they will do.

SpaceX: "So, here's our proposal for a reusable spacecraft: We send the rocket up the ordinary way, decouple the first stage right before it runs out of fuel, use some of the remaining fuel to boost the empty stage back towards the launch site, put some aerobraking equipment on it, use the last bit of fuel to cancel its velocity right above the launch mount, and catch it in mid-air using a pair of giant robot arms attached to the launch tower."

Industry: "Oh come on, that's ridiculous."

*The plan works*

SpaceX: "Umm, yes, you are right. It is ridiculous. Look at this footage, it's absolutely bonkers. Unmentionables-to-the-wall crazy. It evidently works, though!"

It will be interesting to see what the other competitors announce in the next few months. Since Starship is clearly working. They'll need to change their plans or let SpaceX be a monopoly.

Competitors should be designing payloads right now.  Think about how cheap the next Mars rovers will be.  It's time to go find some lava tubes.

Landed, but RUD.

In any case, Superheavy catch from a different angle shows there was actually quite a bit of clearance between the engines and the tower. This is about the moment it comes closest.

Unplanned? Did they have any expectation it wouldn't explode?
