Ultimate Steve
Every time I think I have my head wrapped around the pace of development of this vehicle, Elon tweets again.

Flying dutchman
I think it's great they are not putting too much effort into the hopper anymore. The real mountain to climb here is keeping this thing stable through reentry and flipping it before landing. I think that is what makes or breaks this spaceship and i can't wait for them to begin testing this.

Its still steel but the hex times are used because of thermal expansion and to regulate methane flow to segment. Other option is to use titanium for the tiles. ThatGuyWithALongUsername
Actually, I'm very confused on the whole hex tile thing. What are the hex tiles? Are they a temporary thing? What are hey made of? We need more answers- probably have to wait until we get a proper presentation.

I think it’s more or less permanent, but who knows with SpaceX these days. Mad Rocket Scientist
Well, hexagons can tile around a cylinder easily enough, but I'm not sure what they'll do for the curved nose. I've heard that you can do some things with pentagons and hexagons together to approximate curved surfaces.

A different steel might have a diff coefficient of expansion, right? hence a need for gaps (and maybe transpiration is between tiles?)
