Nightside
There was some smoke and splatter on the camera, so I guess they close. Was the loss of signal that occurred before a comms failure, or simply the booster dropping below the horizon?
cubinator
Could it be because of that thing that popped off during coast? It looked more important than ice...

A lot of pitching on the droneship, saw some smoke off to starboard Yes but noting from the splash so it probably soft landed on water. tater
Yeah, bet it was a soft landing, just wrong spot.
RealKerbal3x
So it may have been damaged from tipping over, like the CRS-16 booster was.
StrandedonEarth
My bet is the booster aborted its landing to spare OCISLY

Thor Wotansen
Can you fault a hard working booster for wanting a bit of R&R in the ocean after a job well done?
Delay
I'm sure we'll get the booster view in a short while. Elon did it for CRS-16 as well.
Ultimate Steve
Despite the altered trajectory, we still don't get full video of the deploy.
cubinator
We are never gonna see that deployment moment, are we?

Brotoro
Once again, we didn’t see the actual separation of the stack of Starlink sats.

CRS-16 was a RTLS landing, so they will have ground video. Likely no other cameras for this mission besides something on a support vessel. Onboard video depends on if they maintained a data link to the booster or if it is intact enough to recover the storage. Update - the rocket landed softly next to the ship
lajoswinkler
I've noticed the thing too. It detached when thruster fired.

RCgothic
I had a bad feeling when the link cut out. It wasn't low enough for LOS. Then there was the callout "1st stage LOS expected" and I didn't expect it to make it.

Maybe it's TensionRod™ technology. Shame the landing didn't work out. Still waiting for that 50th landing. The Earth looked really nice while the stage was spinning though. ThatGuyWithALongUsername
It's too early for speculation, but to me it sounds like this was similar to CRS-16, or maybe the comms failed instead?

I recall seeing something like that pop off on an earlier launch. Don't remember which one though.
