IntellectualTortoise
@JacobJHC Hi, I'm hoping to start this awesome challenge soon and have a few questions: What are the rules about refueling the main Jool 5 craft prior to departing Kerbin SOI? Specifically, could I launch it partially fueled and then obtain more fuel via ISRU on Minmus? If I am able to do this, could I assemble the full craft in Minmus orbit? (i.e. launch the mothership core to Minmus with an attached ISRU module, have it refuel itself and go back into Minmus orbit, then launch landers/other modules from Kerbin and dock them to the mothership at Minmus, then have the mothership fly to Jool, possibly after leaving the ISRU module in Minmus orbit?) If I wanted to send surface bases or rovers to each of the five moons for the Kerbals to use during their visits, could these be launched and transferred to Jool separately from the main Jool 5 craft as long as no parts or fuel are transferred to or from the Jool 5 landers or mothership? My thinking is that they could be classified as separate missions that the Jool 5 mission itself would not rely on for its success. If I wanted to perform ISRU refueling in the Jool system, could I scan the moons for ore using probes before beginning the Jool 5 mission itself? Thanks, and I'm looking forward to doing the challenge!

Specifically, could I launch it partially fueled and then obtain more fuel via ISRU on Minmus? yes, i've done it many times and it was accepted. the important part is, the rules say your ship must leave low kerbin orbit in one piece. so if your ship is assembled when it leaves for minmus, it's ok Quote If I am able to do this, could I assemble the full craft in Minmus orbit? (i.e. launch the mothership core to Minmus with an attached ISRU module, have it refuel itself and go back into Minmus orbit, then launch landers/other modules from Kerbin and dock them to the mothership at Minmus, then have the mothership fly to Jool, possibly after leaving the ISRU module in Minmus orbit?) technically not. you may get dispensation, but it's against the rules as written. unless you really, really need it, i suggest you finish assembly in low kerbin orbit. if you need more fuel, launch an additional refuel mission from the surface to get enough fuel to reach minmus. Quote If I wanted to send surface bases or rovers to each of the five moons for the Kerbals to use during their visits, could these be launched and transferred to Jool separately from the main Jool 5 craft as long as no parts or fuel are transferred to or from the Jool 5 landers or mothership? My thinking is that they could be classified as separate missions that the Jool 5 mission itself would not rely on for its success. probably no. if they are separate missions, they are separate missions. you can't use them. it's better if you don't interact with other missions Quote If I wanted to perform ISRU refueling in the Jool system, could I scan the moons for ore using probes before beginning the Jool 5 mission itself? not sure about this one, but i don't see why not
jost
1 hour ago, king of nowhere said: not sure about this one, but i don't see why not I agree. But it shouldn't be too much of a problem to create an ion powered probe for doing the scans and attach it to the mothership. With ions it's easy to create one sat to cover the whole jool system without ending in insane amounts of extra weight.

Geryz
Hey there, @JacobJHC, I know I'm a little late to the party but I'd like to post my submission for the challenge at Level 3! For my mission, the Hephaestus V, little regard was given to achieve minimum funds or mass requirements. Instead, I intentionally made it as flashy and ludicrous as possible. Not to mention, I added the additional challenge of Kerbalism (SIMPLEX) Life support (although with radiation turned off). In the end, I ended up with a mothership that used a ridiculous 45 Nerv Engines, had to be assembled in 8 launches, most of which were done with a completely ginormous 220t to LKO launch vehicle called the Achilles 2b. The entire mission and its mod list is documented in a video: https://youtu.be/OWz_SJNtiuY. Thanks in advance for reviewing my submission! Your video was very well made and was fun to watch, especially with the little quirks like the barrel roll you threw in. I was impressed the most by the Tylo landing. I had to watch it a few times to fully pick up on how you made it work. I haven't seen many SSTOs that double up on the NERVAs on just 1 1.25 meter tank, and that second one really helped you hold altitude while shaving off so much speed. The loss of control at the very end of your Kerbin return had me on the edge of my seat until you were able to prevent a hard splashdown. Overall, I found your SSTO's design very efficient, very refined, and incredibly thoughtful. I found the extra landing gear being deployed to elevate the craft for launch very clever as well. I do have question though, I am assuming that your air intakes are somewhere inside the central core of the craft? I looked for them but have missed them. I'll add your entry to the leaderboard in the meantime, but until then, well done! the intakes are inside the rapiers, occluding the back node of the rapier. the unplanned loss of control at the end was mostly due to my lack of attention to the way the center of mass moved as fuel drained, so the center of pressure was directly on the center of mass. i used two nervas specifically for the tylo landing, since just 1 meant i would run out of thrust to counteract gravity before i was moving slow enough to finish the ascent on the rapiers. the extra landing gear was merely to save time with ascents, since at the time i was unwilling to spend 10+ tries on a tricky takeoff. Brilliant, such an elegant solution to two problems at once: where do I put the air intakes, and how to lower drag.

The best option is always going to be just stuffing everything in a fairing
king of nowhere
@JacobJHC says he doesn't have the time anymore to follow this challenge. He asked me to take it over. In the near future, I will review all pending submissions (except my own) and start working on moving the challenge to a new thread.
JacobJHC
As @king of nowhere stated, I am officially stepping down as the caretaker of the Ultimate Jool 5 Challenge. As all of you are no doubt aware, my efficiency in reviewing Jool 5 submissions has been waning in recent times. By now, I have been the overseer for the Ultimate Jool 5 Challenge for over six years. When I first began, I was still in high school, now I am graduated from college, and where I commit my time are not what they used to be. The Jool 5 was my favorite KSP Challenge, and completing it for the first time required me to improve my gameplay skills to a degree they wouldn't have reached otherwise. This enthusiasm led me to hold onto the reigns for all these years, but now, after so much time, it is best that another be chosen to lead the Jool 5. @king of nowhere's submissions are, in my opinion, some of the strongest and most expansive in the history of the Ultimate Jool 5 Challenge, so I believe they are the perfect person to take over from here. And with that in mind, I find it fitting that the last submission I review be theirs. @king of nowhere, congratulations on completing the Jool 5 Challenge once again on Jeb's Level! This submission destroyed the previous record of science collected from the Jool System (which you held), and went to extremes uncommon in most Jool 5s. To obtain science from Jool, you deorbited a crewed spacecraft to explore Jool's atmosphere, and then launched them back out of Jool. To obtain surface science from Laythe's ocean biomes, you deployed an aircraft carrier to hold Absolutely Not An Albatross. You circumnavigated each moon, you visited every one of their anomalies, and you collected enough science to unlock the entire tech tree several times over. (Also, your tour of the Flying Christmas Tree 2 has to be one of my favorite video clips ever submitted https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h61wplb0DRw). This submission is perhaps the greatest Jool 5 mission ever flown, and I am proud to hand off the challenge to you. I want to thank everyone for the joy the KSP community has brought me over the last few years. This community is an excellent one to be apart of, and I'm glad I was able to experience it. I wish everyone the best, and thank you for growing this thread to 51 pages, showing that after six years of me being at the helm, there is still a strong enthusiasm for the Ultimate Jool 5 Challenge! JeDoesStuff
So I thought I had sent this before, but I have bested my 30 ton SSTO with an 11.215 ton SSTO Note: part clipping was used here, but iirc there arent any other exploits used besides needed to go to the tracking station because for some reason the ISRU was trying to radiate through the kerbal

Your result is still very good, though Edited August 28 by king of nowhere
