V1.4.3

Scarecrow

Recommended Posts

Until yesterday I've been soldiering on with v1.3.1 but decided that perhaps I should move along with the times and upgrade.  Having allowed the dust to settle and some of the early bugs to be ironed out that you tend to see with any new upgrade, I have now downloaded v1.4.3.  The problem is, apart from being able to select a different colour on a few components, I'm not seeing much of a change.

What am I missing?

Kerbal parachutes is probably the best thing - very fun to play with.

The full change-log is in the OP here...

Of course I’m assuming you don’t mean the Making History expansion, in which case there are a heap of new parts plus the mission builder

Other than personal parachutes & an new & improved 3-man pod, I'm not sure there's anything worthwhile to 1.4.3 without the DLC.   All the particle effects are a mess still - getting better, but 1.3.1 is still better.  I don't think it runs any better either - possibly worse, but I don't have any hard data to support that, just my impression.

The ability to use Tracking Station Evolved.  That's the only reason I'm considering upgrading once 1.4.4 drops.

I hadn't noticed that mod before, I may have to check that out.

ive found that 1.4.X runs a lot smoother and maintains it for much longer periods than previous versions. that alone would be worth the upgrade. now the game only dips below 60 fps during parts of take off and re-entry where it use to dip into the 30's or less.

The vast majority of major game play changes happened back in the alpha and beta days.  Now, when we get improvements, they are of the minor variety.

The DLC is a major update though, with a new parts pack and other stuff.   Most of the 1.4 update was to allow the DLC to work.

I'll be joining you shortly (1.4), as soon as I finally get to Duna, and maybe Jool, and perhaps Eve, in this current save....    So sometime in August.

You can should always copy your current install to a new folder as a backup, then you’ll have 1.3 to fall back on if 1.4 doesn’t work right! If it does work well for you, though, is there any reason not to?

Well…there’s always the mod support issue. That could be a deal-breaker.

after all, 90+ flights in progress at this point.

See, that's the thing.  They say saves are upgradeable, but having started back in the aught teen versions, where saves were not compatible, I'm stuck in this mindest that I can't upgrade my KSP version.

But the mod list.... they just won't play the same, the parts won't be identical.

No No, that just won't do.

I never understood why people were stuck in 1.2.2 when 1.3 and 1.3.1 were right there.  Probably because I never played 1.2.2 (or anything before 1.3)

But now I get it.  I even bought MH, and I'm really not that excited about 1.4.x.  I'll probably switch next time I get the bug to wipe my computer and start over.

I started playing with v0.23.5, and it seems nearly every update since has been a save-breaker to some degree or another. Prior to the release of v1.0.0 I can understand and accept that fact, the game was in 'beta'. But it's not in beta anymore, and after having restarted my game five (5) times already so far, I got sick of it and said enough... so that's why I'm still at v1.2.2

With all due respect to the Devs; If you ask me, the game is still in beta, its core is not a polished product.

Well.  Considering 0.90 was the only official beta...

??? What were v0.23.5, v0.24.2, and v0.25.0 then? Alphas? I could swear my first download (the demo I grabbed just before the v0.23.5 purchase) was listed as a free trial beta, and my first purchase (and all those after and up to v0.90.0) being listed as beta as well. :/

But, as you say, official is official.

Doesn't change my opinion any on the core not being a polished product.

Yes.  I've been following development since 0.18.

While it was technically in Alpha, it was a very much playable game, unlike a lot of Alphas out there.  So for PR sake,I guess they marketed it as a Beta.

But what I always found funny, the .90's introduced a lot of new game play, and then, if I'm not mistaken, they introduced a whole new atmosphere  and other physics changes in 1.0, which really needed a few beta versions of it's own before being completely fleshed out.

Personally I think Squad finished the game they envisioned, unfortunately there are people who want/expect features Squad never intend to implement.  (A lot of those features are available as mods, often even maintained by some of Squad's developers).

I think it's pretty clear at this point that 1.0 was about getting on consoles and not about being finished.

While there may be some truth to this, didn't the console port come a year or so after the 1.0 release?   It is probably true that a console developer wouldn't touch it without it being in full release, but I don't think that was the major reason.
