Crucially, however, these started happening to me immediately after installing Deferred. Do you have Deferred installed? Oh, the fairing dissolve is an intentional feature of Deferred - transparency doesn't work properly with it, so instead of simply having expanding-but-still-opaque fairings, Deferred adds in a dissolve effect so that you can still see inside them.
