Something to show which side is which on parts

Recommended Posts

This is the single biggest gripe I have had with KSP since I got this game years ago, having a component that is facing the wrong way which will prevent it doing what it is intended to do.

80% of the time this is with docking ports that just look the same on the front as on the back but you cannot dock on the back side.

Spending hours and hours trying to build a space station only to find out that 1 of the 10 docking ports is facing the wrong way after docking a number of ships, this usually just makes me hit the X top right and wait a few versions & mod updates before starting over.

Docking ports are very simple to tell the difference.   You just need to pay attention.

The Jr and regular docking ports are even easier, as they are drastically different shapes.

But it does happen from time to time, as one may slip through.   One solution is to use KIS/KAS to remove the part during an EVA, flip it, and replace it.

Another trick is to rebuild the station section exactly in the VAB except with the docking port the correct way, put it on the launch pad, and alt-f12 to "orbit" it into "rendezvous" with the errant station section. Then delete the one you don't want and pretend it was right all along.

I wouldn't mind some kind of control point "forward" and "up" indicators.  Not just for docking ports, but for the probe cores too.  I'm not always certain that a probe core that has been rotated will keep the orientation.

I think the overhauled probe cores have some indicators which way is up (esp the rovemax thing)
