What if??

(I'm trying to recall which game did that - had some shared universe where the first discoverer could name the planet.  They may have changed it when all the planets became named after dick jokes.)

I don't think that would work well in KSP.  First off, while multiplayer is a thing, it's still got a single-player mode - and they've confirmed they want to make it work without a (good) Internet connection.  Which means each play through is stand-alone.

So there's two ways to approach this: Have a huge universe, and the first to discover/land on/etc a planet gets to name it.  Could work - but the planets appear to mostly be handcrafted, and you'd need some way to resolve arguments over who found it first.  (When neither side reported in to a central server.)

You also could have them named by the player on each play-through - which makes *discussing* the planets harder, and making a wiki about the game harder, as there's no shared names to refer to things.

Im guessing there will be no more than like 10 systems as in the dev interview trailer they showed people manually creating worlds and to do something on the scale being discussed would require procedural generation as opposed to  hand crafting.

I was thinking about 3 or so. 10 would be nice.

I was being optimistic :P

Though, if they have an employee specifically working on planets/systems I could see someone knocking out 10 systems easily over the course of a year

I'm not complaining :) I do hope that OPM will still make it to KSP2. I love the mod along with trans keptunian.

No man's sky? As I'm pretty sure I saw a planet called Citroën C4 the other day.

Elite Dangerous still uses codenames I think, but you can see the players who discovered them.

No Man's Sky was my first thought - but a quick check of their website says the planet names are auto-generated.  I'm guessing it got changed...

They are auto generated but the discoverer gets the chance to rename them before uploading.

I renamed the first 3-4 planets I found and then stopped caring when I realized I'd literally never see them again.
