lowest Munar orbit challenge!

Recommended Posts

The objective of this challenge is to enter the lowest possible Munar orbit without crashing into the surface.

Rules

1. Mods are allowed, except for mods like Hyperedit, considering how easily this could be abused.

2. You only have to provide your apoapsis and periapsis heights, we're going on an honor system here folks, please don't lie.

3. the closer you are(in meters) the higher you go on the leader board...as soon as I figure out how to make one.

4. scoring is based on the lowest height you encounter on your orbit. Kinda like golf.

5. Your orbit does not have to be polar or equatorial, it can be as eccentric as you wish.

5. You will get 15 points taken off of your score if your orbit passes close/over an Easter egg. (Mun arch, etc.)

6. Your orbit must be stable and you have to complete one orbit around the Mun

7. Score will be based on the distances between your craft and the Munar Surface AGL.

8. You don’t have to have a perfect orbit, make it as eccentric as you like, as long as it’s low to the surface.

9. You cannot use the Making history mission builder to set an orbit. This challenge is meant to be done in sandbox mode without the use of cheats or the mission builder.

10. Have fun and be creative with your designs! Since it's a daredevil stunt, you have to make your craft resemble a motorcycle, bonus points if it's functional.

Good luck!

Lowest point AGL or MSL? Does it have to be stable? What I mean by that is, does the ship have to be able to complete the full orbit without input without crashing? If not, then we can basically just fly a ship fast and low. I did this on Minmus awhile back.

This may end up more of a "Nail the number down exactly" ordeal than anything. References online state the Mun's highest point at the equator is somewhere near 5.1km, so putting a craft into a 5.1km orbit, making sure it orbits once safely, noting the lowest height over terrain number you reach, and then burning down that number of meters should do the trick.

... I'm a little too lazy to do it myself though :D

(you can't beat that by not being equatorial. The lowest orbit goes UP as you get a more and more tilted orbit)

I’ll update the rules

Why not go for absolutes so folks really push the challenge?  Make a leaderboard (or an option) consisting of the lowest combined total of Pe and Ap.  That should make for some very interesting and nail-biting orbits.

You may also want to make a rule about Making History, since that is not a mod and someone may be a bit too literal rather than taking in the spirit of the challenge.

What can you do with MH that would mess up this challenge?

Sure, I’ll make one. I don’t know how, so if someone could help me out with that, that’d be great.

I’m not sure what you mean with making history. Both DLC’s are fine to use, except the use of the Mun launch site that came with the console’s parts and history. Don’t forget, the idea of the challenge is to get the lowest munar orbit possible, and the craft that orbits the Mün should be a craft resembling  a Motorcycle.

Folks who attempt this, keep in mind that if you switch to another craft or KSC at any point, this ship is likely to be auto-deleted by the game's assumption that it has impacted a surface feature while you were away. Each world has a minimum orbital altitude below which the game considers the orbit non-viable.

Making History allows you to create an orbit in the Mission Builder mode.  It is like a hyper-edit only far more precise. You can set the body you are orbiting, angle of inclination, eccentricity and Ap and Pe.  To be fair, the one thing you cannot do is make elliptical orbits, so that does limit it a bit. So this is tied to rule #1.

Mmm...good point. I play on console, and was not aware you could do this. I’ll update the rules
