AI—image/text/paperclip maximizer?

Midjourney does do a lot of art-type images... but it's a pretty dab hand at photography, too.

There's a feature where you can supply your own input image and then have the AI tinker with it based on your text prompt.  So, for example, here's one of my drone shots that I tweaked with Midjourney to make it a little more interesting.

How to make an illustration for a piece of writing, in two steps:

  1. Tell ChatGPT "Write a prompt for an AI image generator to produce an illustration suitable for <writing piece>."
  2. Plug that into an AI image generator such as Midjourney.

Here are some results I got for various pieces.  Some are better than others, but overall I thought it did a decent job.

Turn anything into a dinosaur, in a few easy steps:

  1. Get a picture of the thing
  2. Feed the image as input to Midjourney, with the text prompt "dinosaur"
  3. Is it dinosaurian enough?
  4. If not, take the output image and feed it back into step 2
  5. Repeat as needed.

Results are below.  In each case, aside from the finished image, I've provided links to the source image and any intermediate steps for anyone who's curious, since I think it's kinda fun to see how the image evolves.  :)   RAWR!

Pelican:

Spoiler

Directly from source image, no iterations needed (presumably because a pelican is pretty much a dinosaur already):

Cat:

Three steps.  Source, iteration 1, iteration 2

Squirrel:

Two steps.  Source, iteration.

I like how this one is still quite recognizably squirrel-shaped despite being clearly a dinosaur.

Mr. Bean:

Spoiler

Three steps:  source, iteration 1, iteration 2.  He turned into a dino reasonably quickly, but it took some doing to lose the shirt and tie.

Teddy bear:

Two steps:  source, iteration.

Daffy Duck:

Two steps: source, iteration.

This one still has a kinda cartoon look about it, but I decided to stop here, in order to keep some personality in honor of Daffy.

Excavator:

Spoiler

Two steps:  source, iteration.  Probably the most quickly dinosaurian image I tried, after the pelican.  But then, excavators are basically big mechanical dinosaurs to start with. :)

Kitchen mixer:

Two steps:  source, iteration.

I'm using midjourney to make a whiskey label for a friend (a kitbashed blend of bourbons) based on a request months ago for the prompt, "an armed squirrel insurrection."

The current label might be this one (the text is in squirrel anyway, lol)

I wish they added it to KSP-2, to have a Kerbal talk.

P.S.
A conversation on the Emiko station topic.
Asking Kerbals about it and getting details.

If I have an NVIDIA 2070 and 16 Gb of RAM, do I have a shot at running Stable Diffusion? I'm both getting tired of squatting on free services, and the inability to just use the thing on mobile should help mitigate the risk of (further) addiction.

Max Tegmark's book, Life 3.0 opens with a story of a company (Amazon? Google?) turning on the AI over a long weekend in secret. The first task they give it is making movies/TV shows. Starting with animated Disney-like stuff. Later photo real with actors who never existed. A point he makes is that that the shows are language customized such that people see the shows in their native languages, and they are not dubbed, the characters speak the languages, use local hand gestures, etc, so that it's entirely convincing to the local audiences.

The above is sorta creepy, but we're rapidly approaching it I think.
