Dark KSP confessions thread

Done something in KSP you wanna get of your chest? Using cheats? Exploiting a bug? Committed mass murder on space frogs? Well you've come to the right place!

I myself recently used cheats during a particularly frustrating mission. I was  coming back from Duna at frighting speed after literally days of work and I realized the inflatable heatshield I had on my craft just didn't work. Tried everything but I just couldn't slow it down no matter how many times I reloaded. I couldn't just watch those Kerbals die after so much effort. Oh look at that the shield folded around the craft when it popped and just barely shielded it during descent. Totally didn't just turn off reentry heating for a bit

There's no need for shame, you will not be judged here! Cleanse yourself of the guilt and fly safe!

I was returning from Dres. The final burn of the mission was complete, I was to coast to some dozen thousand meters inside Kerbin's atmosphere. Then I decoupled the capsule from the rest of the spacecraft....

...260km periapsis.

I used the cheat menu to get the poor Kerbal back down to Kerbin. Also, I did the rest of that mission with MechJeb. Almost all of it. That was 6 months ago.

Depending upon how far away you were when you decoupled and how much time you had before kerbin aerocapture, could have gotten out and pushed with the EVA pack.

Theres probably a lot of "normal" scumminess on my part. Reverting after a probe loses power or kraken attacks. Using timewarp to stop a ship from spinning. Ill skip right to the things I'm probably in the minority of.

I exploit lab modules for science in career mode. A lot.

I've never been to Moho, Jool, any of its moons, or Eeloo despite having played this game for over a decade. I still regularly install the outer planets mod.

I use Mechjeb for ascent, interplanetary transfers, and aircraft autopilot.

Ascent and autopilot are difficult with a 'press key  for max torque' keyboard system. Would be easier with control stick.

Also I make no attempt to land near the ksc when reentering. Not sure if that's uncommon though.

Designed and built a mun-base on Kerbal. Split it into small parts, transfered, landed and assembled on the mun surface. Came back to add a new part, the hole base spawned some meters over the surface and half the modules broke during this process. Very frustrating... Now I build the hole base on Kerbal and cheat it to the moon... Hopefully those bugs are gone in KSP2.  Similar problem with a rover, after a reload some attached parts are clipping around, it looks like they are attached to an invisible rover-part. Same procedure, delete it and cheat it.

Yeah, that is very frustrating and all too common.  I had it happen to a Duna base that I was very proud of, after I committed the cardinal sin of docking a rover to it.  I try to avoid cheats, but I do use them to correct stuff like this.

  • 2 weeks later...

I started a new sandbox and did a free return around the Mün to demonstrate.

While in map view I staged/decoupled on accident and was left with Jeb and the capsule (1.9M Pe)

I valiantly tried to push the capsule to lower Pe but, being so small it just flipped and spun.

That variant of the KCU was deleted and we don't talk about it, any more.

My own dark confession - I accidentally murdered a load of 8 tourists on the launch pad once.  Forgot the old "check your staging" rule and had a Tac Self-Destruct charge that somehow got moved to the first stage.  And in my panic when I figured out what was going on,  I couldn't think to hit the abort system - which I had actually taken the time to set up and test.
