Spaceships Built In Space Far From Earth... What Would They Look Like?

Recommended Posts

It is my thinking that practicality rules in any decision that is continuous going forward in space, because space is an environment that does not really allow you to be non-practical if you want to get anything done.

Shapes: Most likely a cylinder or a bunch connected together. Or perhaps a disk. Why? Because most likely wherever they are built will also be a cylinder.

Processing: Will probably involve centrifuges since without gravity how else are you going to separate raw materials for processing?

The First Industrial Center: Will be made from parts brought from earth, and would start from there.

Best place to set up shop: In orbit of a planet or moon, since it allows you a source of resources to draw upon without being on land and having to fight the gravity to get stuff to you.

Worst place to set up shop: Deep space far away from any planet or moon.

Thoughts?

If being built in space, there is no reason to do this.  Rectangular shapes would better maximize the usable internal space.    On the other hand, if bringing up pre-made sections, then cylinders would make sense

The rest of your comments are reasonable

Shapes: Whatever is easiest and cheapest to build.  Spheres, cylinders, or disks, most likely.

Processing: Will involve whatever is needed to most easily and cheaply process whatever it is that is being processed.
(How else are you going to separate raw materials for processing?) Uh. Well, the cheapest or easiest way, whatever that might be.

The First Industrial Center: "Will be made from parts brought from earth, and would start from there."
Unless an easier and cheaper method exists. If some other alternative exists, existing infrastructure will be used (because it is the easiest and cheapest method.)

Best place to set up shop: Wherever it is easier and cheaper to set up your operation to achieve the goal you are trying to accomplish.

Worst place to set up shop: Wherever it is hardest or most expensive to establish operations.  In most cases, this would be the most distant location that it is physically possible to reach and return from, because it would just be utterly stupid to do that.  I mean, if you're processing ore from the asteroid belt, it would be pretty damn stupid to set up a smelter on Pluto, or Alpha Centauri, or a different galaxy, or Middle Earth , or Narnia, or Arrakis.

Pressurized cylinders (to save the materials and to minimize the surface area, i.e. possible leaks), with rectangular  minecraft-style-octangular inner frames to save the internal space.

Makes sense. Cylinders can be spun or wound/wrapped. The squared-off portion of the circular section could carry infrastructure pipes and conduits.

Much like tunnels really that are easily bored as cylinders with support electrical, lighting, and plumbing etc in the "squared off" portions.  But for entirely different reasons than in space of course

Wait... Doesn't it proove the theory of the Hollow Earth.

Look. We can't see from inside, what's outside of the subway tunnels.
And they are cylindric, exactly like they should be in vacuum.

Maybe the subway tunnels are in fact pressurized pipes, hanging in underground vacuum below the cave ceiling?

Recall, what do you see in the /noclip mode in all known 3d games.

Spoiler

You can often enter that mode because of bugs like how people entered orbit inside planets in KSP 2.
In Elder scrolls 2 Daggerfall this was an strategy some used, it was an early 3d game and it was pretty easy to get into the void that we called it, levitate up at the roof in some caves and it was very easy to clip out.
Bats did it by accident and was stuck in the void but following you and preventing you from resting :)
It as an fast way to get around in the huge an complex dungeons in that game.

So, the Kraken manifests as a giant crowbar and strikes from negative space in some universes.  Very clever indeed
