"Invalid research location" or "Blocked by object" for no reason for RSCM-01 Sample grabber

The Aziz

Bug Report

Reported Version: v0.2.1 (latest) | Mods: none | Can replicate without mods? Yes
OS: win10 | CPU: i710700k | GPU: rtx2060 | RAM32gb

"Invalid research location" for no reason for RSCM-01 Sample grabber. Requirements were fulfilled according to part info, yet it was impossible to perform - therefore, impossible to test if the arm will work when it arrives  several years later at its destination.

I think it was a bandaid fix to avoid people flipping their craft while activating the arm like in 0.2.0. So there's only one specific way to put the grabber now.

But it was badly done and is not properly communicated to the player. (Besides in my own opinion I prefer the old way, it's more fun at least)

This report is directly related to the following, and I am asking that this report be merged with that one:

I'm submitting this bug report as there is no other way to get the craft file I got this on without creating a new bug report.

The autonomous sampling unit is on the lander, at the bottom of the lander's fuel tank, just above the engine.  There is a radial environmental survey unit to one side of it, and a landing leg to the other; neither of these are close enough that the device should be blocked.  I landed on Ike with this craft, but I get the message that the sampling unit is blocked and unable to be used.

That's hardly a fix if the end result is worse (in regard that it also can make the entire mission a failure - I planned to bring it to Bop but now I guess I'll just give up on that part of the flight entirely if the arm is unusable in current position on the lander). Better solution would be to just remove the collision from the part so that it can clip through things.

I believe this issue has made it impossible for the sample grabber to complete the fossil sample on Laythe.  Tried multiple locations landed both on and around the skeleton, but only get "Blocked by Object" or "Invalid Research Location", regardless of craft and part orientation.

Saw the same on my Dres rover design. I think they could have at least made the message more helpful; "Invalid Research Location" implies you are in the completely wrong situation for using the part, like trying to do an orbital survey on the ground, but this is more like "Invalid Part Orientation". In any case, I hope they change the arm to have procedural movement so it can handle being placed in any orientation, otherwise, I'll probably never use it.

Looks like the ‘Invalid Research location’ is not unique to the robotic sample grabber. Just had a landed Kerbal experience the same issue while trying to collect a surface sample. Worked again after a save/reload
