Today in KSP I finished up my stock paddle boat/steamboat.

I still have not came up with an appropriate name for it, any ideas?!? (I want it to be something Mississippi river themed, but with a K :)

Kalypso?

Korsair?

Kerbin Klipper?

African Kween?

I've been a long, long fan of Stewart Cowley's Terran Trade Authority books, and that thing immediately reminded me of many of the images used in those books, especially the work of Peter Elson, and this image in particular:

TheBestOfIsaacAsimov.jpg

It's because it's so...round and non-standard. :)

Spacecraft 2000-2100 was my major non-Star Wars influence growing up.  Very cool stuff.

Mississippi... so, not the Klermont then, since Fulton's North River Steamboat operated on the Hudson?

Today I experimented with planes that used hydrofoils to get unstuck from the water. This one works fairly well, though my impatient dives for the water resemble normal landings only by the fact that when things stop moving around, the plane's right-side up and nothing's damaged. When I can restrain myself, I glide it in at a shallow angle and flare just as the foil is about to contact the surface. When done right, it just about lands itself from that point on. Usually it just digs in. I'm still trying to figure out if that's a curable problem. (eta: Or just maybe I'm not a particularly deft pilot.)

Taking off from the water is easy. Turn on SAS, firewall the throttle, and then don't touch anything. As it accelerates, the slight positive AOA of the foil brings the nose up in a way that allows the wings to help lift the plane from the water. At first, this reduces drag, but as speed builds, so does lift, and for a second or so the plane is flying with the foil on the surface, then just flying. The elevons attached to the foil are set to pitch and roll. The small vertical elevon is set for yaw.

You know what, I like the Klermont, especially since the Clermont was the first steam boat, and this is the first stock paddle boat (as far as i am aware)

Thanks for the great names guys!

Any chance you can launch the largest tail plane ever seen in KSP in time to meet the re-entry?  I just landed a class C and went through exactly the same issue as you.  In the end I just went for 37Km from interplanetary space and rode the tumbling potato right in at 3.2 km/s.  It was carnage, but the critical parts survived, which brings me to what I did in KSP today(ish):

Been working abroad for the last few months so only getting to play KSP at weekends, and then not all that often.  Finally succumbed last night and took my work laptop home.  Installed KSP, KER, KAS, KIS, ScanSat and RemoteTech, started a new career game and got as far as doing a flyby of the Mun with a couple of materials labs and goo containers.  It's good to be back.

Think I'll add in life support and Kolonisation this time too.

Update since my last post: My final mission went well. Chose Vall as a target because the last time I landed there we were still using Tosh's Cart Plugin for rovers. The trip cost 3/4ths of a million funds to launch, returned 12,000 science(10,000 recovered, balance transmitted), then...well, stared at my space center. What now? Where to do? Effectively that save is sandbox.

So I close the game, download Unity 4.6.4 x64, and do the hack. Yay. Works. Well, then what? I'm still pretty much sitting there staring at the VAB with no real goal in mind. I guess I'll throw flying wings at the stars until one stays up there or somethin' iono

I had to realize that my mistake was impatience. I did my first asteroid rendezvous closer to Duna's orbit instead of the logical way inside Kerbin's SoI. And I wanted to bring it home -right away-. That resulted in a high-energy transfer. The angle of the orbits of Kerbin and Stimpy didn't -seem- too big, but that extra ~2.5k m/s velocity felt too much to deal with painlessly when having less than 0.1 TWR. I guess using nukes on an asteroid holding ~800 tonnes of ore wasn't the brightest idea either. ^_^

I think if wanted the extra challenge, I could have launched appendages to rendezvous on an escape trajectory with interplanetary speed, or I could have looked for the most aerodynamic profile of the asteroid to aerocapture anyways... but impatience won, so I reloaded the save of the initial capture, waited 3 years for the best allignment and arrived nice and slow this time. This way a simple Mun gravity assist was enough to get a safe Kerbin orbit without any further hassle.

Now only the fun part remains!

Things are looking up on Minmus with the arrival of the first ore tank.

Bill fresh from his near orbit experience at the hands of the cherry picker was delighted to keep his feet on Terra Mintia as he set up the support legs and removed the transport package.

With everything connected Kerbin gave the thumbs up to the big switch on, while the others cowered in their cabs Bill stayed outside in a fit of bravado.

Initial signs are that it actually works but one of the three engineers on site is now permanently in the control module. In comfort. While the others sleep in the rovers.

I overbuilt the #@$% outta my mapping satellite deployment platform.

Then...I put on MOAR BOOSTERS! :sticktongue:

Then I ripped the wings off an SSTO and made it a quad tilt wing. (And it flew, right outta the box!)

Then I pulled the wings off that (forgetting to save it) and made it a STOL flying wing, which also flew, until a rogue wobble in the rototrons smashed half my control surfaces and I had to ditch, with Death having one hand heavy on the yoke.

SSTOcean, but no casualties.

Can't get to my pics, right now, but suffice to say - THIS is why I play sandbox. Go big or go home! :D

Fulfilled a couple of satellite contracts... collecting Funds to upgrade the VAB.

Tourists actually pay pretty well.  I use a 12 kerbal ship, fill it half with tourists and pick up a few stranded kerbals.  Im up to 11M and I have about 60days before the first transfer window to Duna :)

I love bringing tourists along on missions for some extra cash.... plus they're fun to watch freak out.... lol... :0.0:

Whatttttt?!?  I do not know of this thing!!    :0.0:

There's actually four books total in the (original) TTA series. :D  I didn't know about the last two until much later, when that new thing called the World Wide Web came about.

The other two are Spacewreck: Ghost Ships and Derelicts of Space (probably the best one, even surpassing Spacecraft 2000-2100...could be KSP history book :) ) and Starliners: Commercial Travel in 2200 AD.

This is a nice (simple) website about the books.

GSB is considered to be the weakest of the books, as it was a publisher-mandated rush job, and it suffered for it.  Still, the main story is great, and the Peter Elson artwork is just fantastic...my avatar image was an Elson used in the book for a specific ship that was key to the main story.

Trumpets please. Finally made Eve orbit (twice!) with a little (read lot) help from my KSP Forum friends. Album is from second successful launch.

Pic 1 - The landing gear/heatshields/launchpad is way overdone, but this is a WIP. I started at abt 190 m above sea level (Lat 0, Lon -8.1) fairly level spot on the beach with 7536 dv (from MJ set to Eve).
Pic 2 - The launch is quite visually explosive.
Pic 3 - The ship rising above the pad.
Pic 4 - Double stack set of tanks dropped just before. I missed getting them in the shot
Pic 5 - First aerospikes drop
Pic 6 - Last radial engines dropped. The heat builds before I could adjust and shortly after the nosecone blows up. This happened on my first successful launch too.
Pic 7 - Who needs nosecones? Circularized orbit!
Pic 8 - My little bolt in spaaace. First attempt I had 45 dv left. This time I have 176.

I have previously tested landing. It is a rough ride but I can do it. This launch was a hyper edit landing so chutes were not included. Now I have to either scale this back some or figure out how to get 56 tons plus landing pad to Eve from Kerbin. Minor details after getting off Eve.
