Cardboard Command Pod

Just another one of my side projects in early development. Meant to be an extremely light weight manned pod. After cutbacks at the KSP, engineers were required to come up with creative solutions. They figured, 9 out of 10 kerbals die at launch, why waste all of that money on command pods? And they're always in their suits anyways. Thus they came up with the cardboard command pod! Get ready for a bumpy ride....here at KSP our new motto is, "It's not only safe, it's safe enough!".

I am trying to think of other things that would fit into this sort of theme - landing legs made from old springs, stuff like that.

(Also, duct tape is good for seams!)

I'm down with a custom IVA where all the dials are hand drawn on with a marker. Bonus points to imagination if you make it actually work and give you useful information.

I had pictured as far as something like a cardboard engine as well, but would be cool to have a bunch of wacky parts that work in concert with each other.

Well if it's anything like the ones I made as a kid, it will have a lot of Duck tape and black marker control panels with a broken lawn chair for the seat.

I don't think it should go beyond the 1.25m territory with themed parts, otherwise they'll be ridiculously big.

there's a lot of variations it could have that are hard to choose from.

1) sodacan+mentos = just fuel tanks

2) sodacan+mentos = fuel+engine alone (solid booster or not)

3) sodacan+mentos = fuel tank for 2 liter bottle engine

here's what I've got so far combined, not necessarily in this sizing or configuration.

of course it would be nice to have some alternative sizes/configuration possibilities, for high/low thrust, and high atm/vac operations, so that way a person can build atleast a ship with the possibility for a smallish lander.

My wife thinks the heat shield looks like a Jiffy-Pop container... which actually would be a good way to cushion a landing, and the Kerbals would have a tasty snack post-flight!

I told her animating a heat shield that "pops" during descent might be tricky, but you guys might know how to do it.
