The ARM megathread

Quick question, does this update break saves?

no

People are talking about moving data in save files because your old saves wont spawn asteroids. You need to start a new game after the update for it to spawn asteroids. Your old saves should be fine, but wont have asteroids in them.

So I can just copy/paste whatever data is needed into my old save to get asteroids then?

Something's been bugging me. One of the demonstration videos (maybe Scott Manley's, I can't recall) said that there was no integration of the ARM into career mode.

I was wondering if that meant that the new parts would only be available in sandbox, as they haven't been added to the tech tree? Or was he simply referring to the planned 0.24 improvements not being included in 0.23.5?

Anyone able to let me know? T'would be much appreciated.

I'm guessing that the reverse would be the better option. Though either way is probably very difficult to do correctly and not screw up your persistent file in the process.

The reverse? *gulp* With 60 flight and 60 debris, plus science and progress tracking AND kerbals, my copy and paste is gonna have a heart-attack. Pasting EVERYTHING into a new save is simple, but very tedious.

This is still an awesome update though.:D

So, just to start off, I truly owe Squad a lot, because this game has seriously changed my life. We all owe Squad a big thanks for this game and the continuous updates and hard work they put into it :)

This thread is just to point out a couple things that bug me with the ARM pack. I am in no way trying to talk trash about Squad, these are just a few minor "issues" if you will, that are bugging me. It is a NASA endorsed pack so it would be nice to see some of these addressed To begin...

KS-25 engine orientation: These are canted outwards in a similar fashion to the old SLS design that including five RS-25 engines. They have revised it to four RS-25 engines that are arranged in a square. It's been that way for a while now

*Credit for picture goes to KSP TV, screenshot from the NASA pack reveal!

Nice to have those embedded in spoilers, eh? :)

So that's one thing. Moving on, standalone KS-25 engines are something that many of us would like to see, including myself, GusTurbo, and Giggleplex777 -- the latter two are very well respected craft creators that would benefit with them (but they surely wouldn't be the only ones that would benefit!)

Giggleplex has made a separate thread regarding the standalone engines, so I'll redirect you there! He has also posted some inspirational pictures for what could be done with these potential engines.

Oh hey, I never noticed the rearrangement of the engines IRL. Would be nice to see that correctly modeled in KSP, but I would be happy either way.

EDIT:

I agree, a standalone KS-25 would make my day. Finally, an analogue to the SSME? Stock Space Shuttles will get a whole lot easier.
The RS-25 is pretty much a SSME in real life. I'm not sure how different they are, but a standalone KS-25 would be useful on shuttles.

I suspect that there's a new data block associated with the asteroids that can be transplanted over, though changes to the tech tree may require edits as well. The ships/flags/crew/etc are the easy part, though the ships are MASSIVE in the data compared to everything else. Even so, I'm getting ready by splitting out ships, flags, crew, scenario data (tech tree, ScanSat progress, etc) into individual TXT files with a perl script. If anyone wants to play with the script in linux, I'm happy to share:

Am I to understand that Buran-Energia also uses that engine?

No it doesn't. Buran uses an RD-170 on the Energia rocket that, along with the boosters, are the only engines that fire on launch. The OMS equivalent for the Buran are on the orbiter, but are (or were) only used in space. :)

Once the release is out and you folks have had a chance to see and try the parts, feel free to start threads about them in the Suggestions forum. But since what you're seeing now may not even be the final version of aspects of a release that isn't finalized yet, please keep the discussion to this one thread for the moment. Thank you!

No, the four Boosters of the Energia (The same as those used on the Zenit) use the RD-170. The core of an Energia is powered by four Hydrolox fed RD-0120's

Whoops, my mistake. I know almost everything about the US space program, but my knowledge about the Russian space program is quite meager. :(

It's cool, I don't know much about the Russian space program either, but the Energia/Buran was and is my all time favourite programme (So I have done a lot of research into it.), and Constellation runs a close second.

/OffTopic

Oh my god! I really can't wait for this and 0.24! It's the only thing going through my head all of the time!
