Last I heard, he's immortal. Reappears in the Astronaut Complex. This may have been changed though.

I can imagine that his show of fear is due to the impact before death being considerably painful. XD

I think all your Kerbals will respawn at the complex after death, unless you turn that off in your save.

You can try adding a radial parachute and an external command seat to a probe body. Pretty sure Jeb will love it
