[1.12.X] Tantares - Stockalike Soyuz and MIR [16.1][28.05.2024][Mars Expedition WIP]

@RabbitOfDogs For the thousandth time. The helmet of a Kerbals has exactly 0.625m wide. If a Kerbal take of  the helmet the head is still the widest, namely ~0.35m. In order to fit into a 1.25m Pod easily 2 Kerbals without a helmet and in a capsule with 1.875m 3 on a plane with a helmet.

Is the BLACK ARROW and BLACK PRINCE behaving themselves yet?

IIRC @Beale figured out they were behaving the same as any other rocket in KSP, the difference was just that his test .craft files used a probe core with no reaction wheels and wasn't compensating with some other control system.

So that new Proton beta - outstanding.
Works great, and I absolutely love that new third 5-in-1 stage engine.

Thanks!

Hi Beale,

nice ALV but the ALV decoupler is missing. The old model and the new texture will not fit. ALV is always to powerfull, to lift  21 tonns in LKO only the first 2 stages was needed.

Yup, several parts still not completed + balancing not yet done.

  • Decoupler
  • Separation rockets
  • Fairing bases

I think the ALV will be a Mun rocket in the end (unless nerfed to the extent that it becomes useless).

@Beale what are your plans/roadmap for 1.1 release? Did you have secretly begin to update Tantares to Unity 5? Just to know if I have to keep a copy of 1.0.5 (I'm planning to delete all my copies when 1.1 comes out) for your mod

As far as I can tell, from very short (less than 5 minutes) test. All parts are O.K.

I will try to get Unity 5 Part Tools Working ASAP!

Yo beale, either Im just a noob but I cant find the rockets that go under the soyuz capsule that fire when you land on ground. If there are not such things, why is it that?

I've never included them, not much consequence of them included in KSP, aside for visual FX. Landing is perfectly safe with only a parachute.

@hraban is working on his own Soyuz capsule, with jets, you may be interested.

Based on your argument on helmet size it's actually mathematically impossible to fit 2 kerbals in a 1.25m pod sitting side by side...

Whether or not a pod can hold a set number of kerbals without helmets is irrelevant, as the space must be able to hold them with helmets as they are required for take-off and re-entry. Therefore you cannot fit 3 kerbals in a 1.25 pod. I believe a 1.875m pod would still be too small for 3 even with a tiered seating arrangement unless the pod is elongated and given a backseat. Thus either their helmets are smaller than .625m or kerbal capsules are bigger on the inside...

Not necessarily true, especially in the case of the Soyuz, see Soyuz 1-11 (Not all great examples of safety I admit).

Well we already knew Cosmonauts were crazy, but I was speaking entirely regarding Kerbals... they always wear their helmets on takeoff or landing... I'm pretty sure Gene threatens to take their snacks away if they don't...

But seriously @Beale i love this mod and ALWAYS use it in my games! Keep up the good work!

@Beale It seems there's an issue with the Alnair_Parachute_A and Alnair_Parachute_B parts models, Maybe missing UVs. it's not a problem in stock, but it breaks the part for some reason when setting it up with RealChute.

(tried importing the parts with blender, this is the error "KeyError: 'bpy_prop_collection[key]: key "Spica_Parachute_A_Canopy_Spica_Parachute_A_Canopy_auvMat.mainMaterial" not found'")

The real sojus seats aren't side by side (on the diameter) but arranged on the circumfence of the craft, pointing the smaller foot sections inwards (and stacked in height, commander is a bit deeper). And yes, at least the MK1 capsule has a (much) bigger IVA than EVA Model. Can be seen in 1.1pre with the x-ray vision.

My 2 cents on the topic:

for me, having the better (realistic) scale between the size of the actual lifeform (the kerbal) and the part (and the IVA) 99% of the time is worth more than the requirement to put on a completely oversized EVA (!) helmet on a green man with an oversized head just during takeoff and landing. All pods that increase the size (of the actual mesh or just the IVA mesh to perfectly fit kerbals with helmets result in IVA views that resemble a TARDIS more than the thing they are trying to recreate. The IVAs look like the kerbals sitting in a cathedral rather than a small, just barely fitting capsule. Also, all the squad IVAs for spaceplanes and shuttles DON'T have helmets enabled in the IVA. So much for the realism^^

It would be cool to have smaller IVA helmets without the bulges for the lamps and all. Something like the inner Apollo Pressure "fishbowl" helmets or something.
