The Official Kerbin Cup Tournament Thread - Final Entries Posted

I wanted this particular challenge to be somewhat subjective and open, but if you have some suggestions on criteria, I'm all ears.

I'm with others on this in that allowing hyperedit basically nullifies the 'get to space' part of the challenge. (same with cheats like infinite fuel, hack gravity.) I think if the criteria listed in the challenge description can be 1-clicked away by a mod or cheat, then we should be restricted from using it. Yes, it will be all honor system to do so, but we're a good bunch here, right?

Are we able to land it on plannets without an atmosphere and also can we just Hyperedit it to a plannet for example Eve or somewhere?

Sure, if it helps the scenery. It's about taking a nice looking picture and making sure the craft looks like a trophy.

EDIT: I amended the challenge to make it more specific. Hyperedit's fine, as are other mods. Take the picture in space or not, just make sure the craft looks like a trophy and the pic looks as good as possible from in-game.

I thought you were a shoe-in for sure.

Anyway, rules need some major clarification. If mods are allowed, someone could conceivably model a giant golden Jeb trophy with rockets in his feet and SSTO capability.

There's a problem with that? It sounds glorious.

I may be cynical... OK, I am cynical... but the initial degree of ambiguity about the rules followed by this particular prhasing makes all of this sounds less like a community challenge and more like an attempt to crowdsource marketing material to use during world cup fever time.

I mean, sure, it makes perfect sense to use the challenge as a promotional thing. But rather than making it a challenge that can be dressed up to promote KSP, it sounds more like a marketing job being dressed up as a challenge so that the community does the work.

Either way its making the people in the challenges think outside the box and go one step further.

This contest is my baby. Marketing the game through the contest is not what I have in mind here. It's maintaining a sense of pride for the places you're rooting/playing for and most importantly, having a good time. As for any ambiguities, I'm all for suggestions and tightening up anything along the way. This is for you guys and if there's anything that might detract from the experience, I'd like to see if improvements could be made. PM me and we can chat about it.

You want this, don't you? The hate is swelling in you now. Give in to your anger. With each passing moment you make yourself more my servant.

To the Dark side anger leads. The dark side is an easier path, not a stronger one.

Fair enough.

Here's what led me to that line of thinking: On reading the first challenge I thought about what I might have done had I been part of this contest. "Get a trophy to orbit"... hmm. A "pretty" trophy is too obvious and not very imaginative...

Well, I thought to myself, what about a trophy made of orbiting trophies? Trophies launching trophies launching trophies, head off to Jool, then set up a whole bunch of orbits for the little trophies around Jool and the moons which, when looked at in map view from the north pole of Jool, form the basic outline of a trophy. Thinking about it I can picture how it could be done.

I think this is pretty clearly the kind of entry that would be differentiated from the simple and obvious "nice looking ship" entries that are likely to be submitted. And it would probably require rather a large amount of skill and patience to pull off. But it wouldn't match the request that "the pic looks as good as possible from in-game". So, I thought, why would "prettiness" be an official requirement of the challenge? The challenge is to get a trophy to orbit. A "nice looking trophy" might be the obvious choice, but why is a pretty screenshot the official "most important aspect" for winning the first challenge? Why not skill, or imaginative thinking, etc? And why a single screenshot? Why not a movie? Or an album? My cynical side whispered "because a pretty screenshot makes for good promotional material".

Teams are up. Challenge is up. Congrats to everyone chosen and thank you for everyone who submitted names. Good luck and have fun!

Congrats indeed! And a big "don't worry team, we tried!" to everyone else, especially the guys that submitted with me :). Now it's back to lurking, and hoping you guys do well against the power of the reddit! (Beware of the reddit, that place is frequented by serious dinosaurs and their teams look scary good!)

Rune. Now back to the sidelines! I really though we had a shot, but we should have definitely gotten the presentation video idea sooner.

If that's the case then it makes sense why both teams were cherry picked by the mods.

The vid's still happening. :P Since we can still show spirit for the forum overall.

After all, we weren't called team Hype Train for nothing.

man!, I was sleeping!

super happy to participate! :-)

Rowsdower, can the picture be photoshoped in any way after it's taken? (some contrast, colours, blablabla)

I also would like to know about this. While we can't 'shop the whole thing, it could perk the picture up to do a background or text or something. Then again, this isn't a photoshop challenge. Then again, if it's a good photoshop how would anyone know?

True that.

I'd also like to know: What are the limits? Can we push it, and submit a GIF? Or a comic style set of images as one? Or just one, static image? Can we make notes on it so they know what's going on?
