  1. Today I improved my Portable Station. The new version includes more features than ever and with the optional Expansion Kit can be upgraded into a ring station. I'll post a download soon.

  3. Bump for the Applied Sciences Division's newest product, the Ore Bot Tiny Edition! An extra-compact uncrewed lander for harvesting Ore and bringing it to a station for processing. See OP for details and download link.
  4. PB666 brings up the same point I was going to. What's going to give us the most grief is the law of Special Relativity. Depending on with what objects we're trying to communicate and how they're moving, we may encounter issues of events being in different chronological orders. On a mild scale, imagine being on a spaceship and getting a New Year's e-card from your grandchildren before getting your Christmas e-card. Unfortunately this issue is so cerebral and esoteric that we'll most likely not know what to do about it until we actually have an extended space civilization to manage, and until we've invented some form of FTL communication. If we never do, that'll put a big hamper on any interstellar Steam sales.
  5. I didn't even know about the Vulcan until just now, but now that I've looked it up I'm going to vote for Falcon Heavy because I'm not big on disposable boosters. Yes I know that makes me a kerblasphemer. Krucify me ;P
  6. 7/10 I like how the nacelles are sort of clustered around the center of mass, although I don't know how much that matters in a warp bubble.
  7. Okay so I have a new question, but I can't guarantee it's not anything that's been asked before, in which case I apologize in advance. Anyway. Based on my understanding of the rules, as long as the "main" ship is a single ship at the time it leaves Kerbin's SOI, it's valid. So hypothetically one could put a great misshapen Katamari of ships at the edge of Kerbin's SOI, nudge it out, and then break it up and fly all the pieces there as a flotilla. No, I don't plan to do this. But while preparing my departure, I realized, hey, I can save delta-V if I take another ship and push Kidonia to an escape trajectory. So is this okay, or does the main ship have to start its voyage from a stable orbit? And if so, how eccentric an orbit is permissible (i.e. can it be 70x50000000km)? EDIT: Okay so this is really a staging question. Can I ditch stages while still in Kerbin's SOI? I presume so but I don't want to find myself cheating.
  8. This isn't entirely true. I've found that parts clipped inside other parts end up being shielded (not that I've ever exploited this - it feels so very cheaty), and parts near the back of a vessel seem to generally be affected less by re-entry heating, so I presume they'll make less drag as well. Still, all the above suggestions are valid. Also try redesigning it so those side pods are all facing straight forward - fuel tanks (and most other parts) pick up a lot of extra drag when oriented at an angle or sideways compared to straight forward.
  9. Please do not report bugs from versions prior to 1.0.5. Sure it's funny, but unless it's still present in 1.0.5 then it's already been addressed by the devs and bringing it up again is only going to waste their time and delay the next patch. Emphasis on DELAY THE NEXT PATCH ;P
  10. The problem here is that the KS-25 Vector is literally 1/4 of the KS-25x4 Mammoth (hence the name). In thrust, mass, and efficiency it performs exactly the way a quarter of the Mammoth would. So rebalancing it would make it all weird and illogical unless they changed the name... okay I suppose they could change the name. That or redesign the Mammoth, e.g. nerf the Vector and then make the Mammoth consist of eight of them or something.
  11. In the future I recommend keeping backup copies of KSP so you can go back when new updates come out. So HINT HINT OP and anyone who's reading this - when 1.1 comes out, you may want to back up 1.0.5 first! Don't say nobody warned you ;P
  12. Can my base in a tube be in the next one? http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/126978-para-sci-applied-sciences-division-resurrected-in-the-new-forum/
  13. It occurred to me that I've apparently qualified for the K Prize several times before, but I'd never bothered submitting an actual entry. So today I recorded a short video of my cargo spaceplane bringing a scanning satellite to low Kerbin orbit.
  14. ...Okay so I'm late to the party but based on cursory reading of the rules I've qualified for this prize several times before. What all counts as a minimum submission? Do I need to post a craft file, or a certain minimum number of images? To start, here's an example of a time I used an SSTO spaceplane to bring some stuff to my interplanetary mothership: So do I get the prize or do I have to do additional steps? xP
  15. ...I sure hope those make it in! They look awesome! The game really needs a bunch of little polishing things like this.
  16. 672: A whole year of development proves fruitless, until one of the KSC staff notices an intern trying to fetch something out of a long tube by turning it upside down and shaking it. Long story short, the "Klaw" motorized grabbing unit is invented. A new rescue mission is sent to the K 669 R, but unfortunately the new chief engineer forgot to add a Klaw and thus the second rescue team is ALSO stranded in space! Fortunately, by the end of the week things have been more or less sorted out, and everyone makes it back to Kerbin. 673: Bat Kerbal is in the middle of a nighttime crime-fighting spree when he encounters Jokerb, a crack pilot who aspires to serve in the Kerbal space military alongside Commander Jeb. Unfortunately, Commander Jeb has not been born yet, and Kerbalkind has yet to develop a space military. Bat Kerbal reassures him that things will get better with time and that he shouldn't give up on his dreams, then flies off into the sunrise.
  17. PARA-SCI APPLIED SCIENCES DIVISION In other words, a repository of all craft I have created that I have deemed worthy to share with the public. At present all ships use exclusively stock parts. Some aesthetic-only clipping of batteries, Science instruments, and fuel tanks to a minor degree is involved, but no moving parts are clipped and I've done my best not to "abuse" part clipping to create overpowered fuel tanks, etc. (Essentially I've preserved the "intended" fuel volume using nose cones or fuselage parts). WARNING: All of the download links are broken due to Dropbox changing the way their public URLs work, and most of the craft below are outmoded anyway. This thread will remain open for archival purposes, but consider downloads closed until I can get around to publishing updated craft. DESIGNED FOR 1.0+: Spaceplane Hanger [1.2] Fear not, I have not misspelled "hangar," but in fact have created a monstrous vehicle capable of dangling spaceplanes precariously above the ground as only a true hanger could! Features a high lift range and weight capacity, and it sports an extra command pod enabling Kerbals to oversee lifting operations from within the safety of the vehicle. DOWNLOAD | Imgur Album Portable Station Advanced and Portable Station Expansion Kit Advanced version of the Portable Station. Less compact (about 30% longer), but with several new features, including pre-packaged ISRU mining bot, survey probe, and Science probe; detachable drive stage with probe core and RTG for self-retrieval; upgraded fuel and Ore storage; and expansion capability with the accompanying Expansion Kit. The Expansion Kit is unable to stow within a Mk3 cargo bay, but can be easily packed in a Size 3 fairing, can be attached to the station and carried along before final deployment, and like the station itself is subassembly-friendly with a large docking port as the root. It features six ring segments, which with the space tug included on the station can be assembled into a habitation ring; several extra docking ports; and auxiliary storage for LiquidFuel, Oxidizer, MonoPropellant, XenonGas, and ElectricCharge. Download Portable Station Advanced | Download Portable Station Expansion Kit Ore Bot Tiny Edition Extra-compact lander designed to work in tandem with the Portable Station, landing on a small object such as Minmus or the Mun, harvesting Ore, and bringing it to the station for processing. Equipped with four RTGs enabling it to mine overnight and in places far from the Sun such as on Jool's moons. Also capable of stowing within a single short Mk3 cargo bay. With a total delta-V of over 1200 m/s, potentially capable of transporting Ore between bodies such as Jool's moons. Also subassembly-ready with the junior docking port as the root - just stick it in the Subassemblies folder. Download Portable Base What's better than a Mun base? A Mun base IN A TEWB! Base-a-doochous! This is a complete surface base, including an ISRU drill and refinery, Science lab, housing for up to 12 Kerbals, and a rover and skycrane for self-assembly, all designed to stow within a Mk3 cargo bay (a length of at least two long cargo bays, one standard cargo bay, and one short cargo bay is required). Also works for Minmus and any other objects smaller than the Mun. NOTE: The skycrane must be refueled after delivering each component to the Mun's surface, which requires a separate fuel reserve. I recommend the Portable Station listed below. Instructions: Download Laythe Plane 3 Sleeker and better-performing than ever! An ultra-compact spaceplane designed to fly on and reach orbit around Laythe, capable of stowing within a Mk3 cargo bay. Carries one Kerbal and a full suite of scientific instruments (only the Science Jr. and Mystery Goo experiments have been omitted). Fuel contents have been tuned based on 1.0.5 aerodynamics for best performance. Features RCS, standard and junior docking ports, and probe core allowing remote operation (such as for rescue missions). Download Kanoe 1.2 A teeny tiny boat for Kerbals to take for spins in watery locations. Approximate travel range is only about 500 meters (i.e. 250 round trip). Also includes a junior docking port to enable easy deployment and recovery. The Oscar-B tanks at the back are intended for flotation and thus should not be filled. Download Portable Station What's better than a space station? A space station... in a tewb! This is a fully functional station designed to pack within a Mk3 cargo bay (a length of at least one long cargo bay plus one standard cargo bay is required). This is both the most compact and the most feature-rich edition yet, including an ISRU converter, three jumbo docking ports and six docking ports in each of the smaller two port sizes, and reserves of LiquidFuel, Oxidizer, Monopropellant, and XenonGas. Instructions | Download SSTO Shuttle Mk1.2 The above shuttle has been improved using shock cone intakes and some mass and drag optimizations, allowing it to reach orbit with over 100m/s more delta-V left over and handle better on the way back down. Download Stackable Ion Probe Ultra-compact stackable, reusable ion probe for orbital Science harvesting. Useful when carried aboard a mothership for missions to multiple objects, such as the Jool system. Total delta-V estimated at 4600m/s; capable of burns up to approximately 300m/s at a time before recharging. Not recommended for trips beyond Jool's orbit (i.e. Eeloo) due to solar panel constraints. Download Ore Bot 2.1 Compact lander designed to work in tandem with the Portable Station, landing on a small object such as Minmus, harvesting Ore, and bringing it to the station for processing. Equipped with a large number of RTGs enabling it to mine overnight and in places far from the Sun such as on Jool's moons. Also capable of stowing within a single standard-length Mk3 cargo bay. Download Mako Replica The Applied Sciences Division's first replica - the "Mako" all-terrain vehicle from Mass Effect. Like the original, it features an overdesigned suspension, powerful jump jets capable of ascending over 300 meters in a single bound (Note: jumps over 5 meters are ill-advised as the suspension is partially composed of batteries that will explode on impact), seating for four, and a working cannon (only one shot though). Download
  18. That there is where I've had a problem. I spend all this money building scaffolding to launch my rockets, and the janitors just up and delete it when it's still perfectly usable and could easily just have a new rocket stuck in it again. I want my money back! ...and on the off chance I am getting it back and not getting told about it, I suggest for future KSP versions that a little notification display about it, a la the "cannot activate while stowed" and Science transmission notifications: "X funds awarded for recovery of Y debris."
  19. I'm just dropping by to mention again that the inability to edit BBCode is continuing to drive me crazy. Please, someone, add this feature back or tell me a way to access it myself!
  20. ...This thing gets more impressive to me the more I try to replicate it. Somehow you're hauling 50 tons while I struggle to get off the pad with a mere 36, fighting all the while with the landing gear twisting and snapping off.
