Is Feather/Carefree Re-entry Possible in KSP?
sp1989 replied to sp1989's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Lets revive this discussion. With the new 1.0 update will a virgin galactic type reentry be possible? -
Don't get me wrong please. I love the way it looks and I am sure you have gone through painstaking efforts to get it to look like this but idk. To me it looks a bit stretched. It looks too long. I know the SLS is an enormous rocket! However like I said it look too stretched. If you are going by that picture I am afraid you are making it too long because of the angle. If you look at the mock up picture the camera would be positioned on a tripod or at eye level of a standard human. That SLS is most likely pasted over a Space Shuttle rollout. So you have to imagine that there is an immense angle to the picture. So if you are stretching your model based on this picture because of the angle your end result will end up looking stretched. Both of your comparison shots are straight on. Compare them straight on but from what would be the height of a kerbal or human looking up at a similar difference. Anyway it really does look good albeit in my opinion a little stretched. Its probably just me.

Bacon Labs - Stockalike Ariane & More - Dev Thread
sp1989 replied to _Augustus_'s topic in KSP1 Mod Development
The white with the blue stripe is the way to go. Thats just my personal opinion. Its your mod. I mean if you want to make it crimson and pink thats up to you. I didn't mean to sound like a petulant child "I needs to be white!". It just that if you are making a Vega rocket, in my opinion, it should be white. -

Agreed!! Needs to be white. -
They have to have his log! Its what makes that book so great! I mean he is alone on the planet he has to talk to someone. Plus with Ridley Scott there will be enormous sets and models. I can't wait to see the realization of the space infrastructure. I hope it doesn't look too futuristic. I pictured the infrastructure to look similar to the planned mars mission infrastructure. The SLS for example. Also I wonder what the resupply ship looks like. In the book they try sending him supply's and because of the haste it explodes after takeoff. Wouldn't it be cool to see an SLS blow up? I know it would probably be an Atlas V or something like that. My main point is i hope its real NASA infrastructure no fantasy over done futuristic stuff.

The Martian by Andy Weir in my humble opinion, is one of the greatest REAL space books written in a long time. Now yes it is science fiction in the sense that it takes place in the not so distant future and it has not actually happened. However for anyone who has read it Andy Weir has gone through painstaking effort to ensure the realism of this book. The ships, the infrastructure, the characters, the situation are all very possible and stay well within reality while at the same time being extremely compelling. Now since it is such a great story hollywood has sunk its ravenous teeth into this story. Obviously they are interested in it because it is a unique story and the ability to create a film that isn't a remake or derivative is an exciting prospect. It is or was directed by Ridley Scott and will star Matt Damon as Mark Watney, basically the exact opposite of his character in Interstellar *spoiler*. So I guess this is a book club discussion page? What are your thoughts? Have you read the book? Do you want to read the book? Are you excited about the movie? What do you think of the cast? I will post production pictures from the movie as they come out and more thoughts as the film gets closer. Anyway......discuss. Everything so far...http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3025060/First-look-Matt-Damon-Jessica-Chastain-astronauts-set-Ridley-Scott-s-film-Martian.html *Warning* this is a discussion thread so spoilers are allowed and should be expected below. If you plan on reading the book or seeing the movie and don't want to know what happens stop scrolling. You have been warned. If I may comment from a consumer perspective. I am not a modder, texturer, or configurer. With KSP being in its current form I don't think paying modders would work mainly because of abandoned mods and IRL events that cause modders to drop projects and in some cases beloved and very useful projects get completely lost. So paying for a mod only to have it lose support doesn't work. There needs to a guarantee that work is continued through iterations and support is given if something goes wrong. I know this is 1.0 and supposedly a stable game but come on this is Squad I can't imagine them stopping here. There will be updates just less often. So my point is, that to pay for a mod and then have it die, that would be unacceptable. Even if the cost incentive is there, things happen and interest gets lost. That being said when 1.0 comes out it might be a good idea for squad to take a look at some of the best mods out there, Sarbian Mechjeb is certainly one that should get a look, and buy the rights from each perspective modder. Then release them as DLCs and not only pay the modder for the rights to the mod but also give them money for each download. It also could be better for this community because people would release better mods hoping that squad will buy and maintain it so squad will buy it. I don't have alot of money but I have also had countless hours of fun and enjoyment because of many modders out there. If one day they were to become paid mods I feel that even if its just to support the people who have made this game amazing for me I would buy the DLC. Because the modders have been basically beta testing their mods just like squad has for the last 4 years. So it seems only fair. Would I like having to pay? definitely not. Would I? Hell yes because having been a part of this community for almost two years now, I know the hard work that goes into everything and you guys deserve it. I also think that there are alot of awesome modders out there who have been hiding a lot of their best stuff or have left the community due to loss of interest. So they mod for themselves. If there was a cost incentive we might truly see some amazing mods come out or get revived.

Thats amazing we can essentially make a thor/delta. As usual great work!!

Hahaha well I tried to be a little more elegant and tactful besides dragon got banned, he isn't adding new content, and hopefully someone picks up the maintsinence through 1.0. I take your post as a compliment lol. I am gonna install a few of these to see if they work in 1.0. I have a feeling that many if not all will be broken in someway. Also due to the dependencies of some we will have to wait on some of them. I will report my findings later.

Amazing!! When it comes out it seems that roverdude is working with squad to make the heat shields look burnt after reentry. When the time comes, if it's something you could add to your heatshields would you? That is a fantastic piece of realism that is really cool and is a lot of fun. If you can't either way that new heat shield really does look fantastic.
-
Actually in the last devnote tuesday roverdude mentioned that the heating was going to affect the color of the heatshields. It would be incredible if scorched marks showed up on spaceplane parts.

Am I wrong in saying that there is no real hype for this update? I mean yes it is really exciting and yes we are all hyped for 1.0 but from my experience with the hype train and hype for updates was for updates that no one really knew was going to come. All the other updates never had official release dates. We all know this game is coming out in 5 days. Just saying....

I agree there are quite a few unappreciative and demanding people. I however am very appreciative of whatever gets fixed and updated. If I really had the time to learn config editing I would but I just dont have the time. I want to play KSP and enjoy my experience. Not spend half the time fixing stuff to get something to work, only to get frustrated when it doesn't work. When I sit down to play KSP I only have time to play ksp. So I am extremely appreciative when people get cool things to work that have been dead for a while.

I know you have alot of your own projects going. However it seems like such a shame to see the ISS Community pack not get the attention and love that it deserves. So a new community effort to revitalize the pack seems like something that should be on the Horizon with the 1.0 update. From what I have experienced with the pack there are a few docking port issues that need to be addressed. The entire truss system is loaded with bugs for some reason. I mean just the parts, those are actually quite wonderful. Still if there are no content updates coming from Dragon the ISS def needs some community love. Now I have said this one thousand time and I will say it one thousand more. I am not a modder, texturer, or configurer. I however am just a facilitator and I make recommendations with no expectation of my recommendations being taken up or listened to. However with the new 1.0 update, and the CSS update, and with the soyuz existing, and spacex mod that exists it seems that the ISS is long over due for a real substantial update. I mean just to have to have it properly priced and integrated with the tech tree would be amazing. Everyone is looking for station parts that look like ISS parts what about a mod that ACTUALLY has ISS parts. It exists! IDK thats just my opinion.

As long as due credit is given, the work is representative of the original project, and they have permission either from the OP or through license I have no problem with people fixing things. But all three of those criteria need to be met.

Due to a fracas that occurred several months a go the creator of this thread was told he was reluctantly suspended for a few months, from the powers that be. In lieu of returning he has decided to maintain his mods through third party intermediaries and has mused about the potential of creating his own website strictly for the maintainence and distribution of his mods and the mods he takes care of. Now we have not heard from him in quite some time and have no official statement of his status because he has vowed never to return to these forums. So I say that we should stand resolute and hopeful that these mods carry on into the next era of KSP, however if they are to die allow them to die with grace and be reborn anew through the next generation of KSP players.

Well the only thing I can forsee is the fairings not actually functioning as fairings with the new aerodynamics. That being said someone pop it in game with far and see if it works. If the fairings function as fairings and not aesthetic coverings, then this mod really should stand the test of time pretty well.

Love love love the Martian! Incredible book! I hope they don't ruin the movie that's supposed to come out late this year I think.

ATM is a requirement for all but especially so for Mac users.

I think it fair to say it works but there no signs of it bein further developed or maintained. This could change but it works yes but I feel for all intents and purposes it is dead. Porkjet is very active obviously in squad development and may one day come back but only time will tell.

Oh wow!! Now thats a great idea!
