Spacecraft Design Evolution in KSP
Curveball Anders replied to septemberWaves's topic in KSP1 Discussion
This. I'm almost vegetarian, except for bacon, but for Kerbals there's no exceptions -
Actually no. Or rather, yes everything is possible with mods, but there's several things that aren't practical. Several things that aren't practical due to the design of Unity and of KSP core on top of Unity. That's why it's so nice that Squad do think about mods in their internal processes (note that modding has a heading of it's own in the release notes). <off topic> 9 exclamation marks ... And all those exclamation marks, you notice? Five? A sure sign of someone who wears his underpants on his head. -- Terry Pratchett in Maskerade </off topic>

Spacecraft Design Evolution in KSP
Curveball Anders replied to septemberWaves's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Asparagus staging did make more sense in earlier versions, and old habit are hard to kill. The addition of more varied SRB's, the concept of cost and a more refined aeromodel has changed the table quite a bit. But it's not just habits, it's also the dreaded 'internet history persistence'. Searching the net for help/guidance/tutorials for 'KSP launch' (or j.random other thing) and you'll get a pile of suggestions, some of them several years old and totally wrong (some of them totally wrong even when posted). -
It's nothing new. Just look at (the still alive) forums (and share sites) for games like Civ and SimCity. They've dealt with X number of versions for years. It's a bit more hassle, but not that much of a deal. I can see that a modder releasing a kit that requires expansion X might get a bit of whines but that's life.

What Do You Use Space Stations For?
Curveball Anders replied to AWESOMEPIEMAN's topic in KSP1 Discussion
For a short period early in career it's an easy provider of science. But very soon my stations convert into core logistic components. I normally have very few crafts that take off from Kerbin and even fewer that ever are intended to return. Instead I use a Soyus/Progress style (UpdownTaxi/Refueller) to get kerbals and fuel to and sometimes from the station(s). Using a 'SpaceBus' to shuttle kerbals and resources between the stations. A tourist trip to Minmus normall takes (at least) 5 different stages, all done when the trip can be utilised to max. UpDownTaxi from KSC to Kerbin Station, when there's 4 (normally) kerbals to launch. SpaceBus from Kerbin Station to Minmus Station, when there's 4 kerbals heading that way. Std 2-seat (robo) lander from Minmus Station to Minmus and back, when there's 2 ... SpaceBus from Minmus Station to Kerbin (or Mün) Station when there's ... UpDownTaxi back to KSC, when ... I also like to build and prepare out of Kerbin missions in Kerbin orbit. So when the Duna or Dres (for instance) window opens I can send a complete package of station(s), landers, tugs, landers, taxis and comsats in one big package. -
For me it was two different versions of getting it. The first was already in my first run in the demo. Getting a box of building blocks, a way to attach them and then launch them into space (after a couple of explosive fails). The second was figuring out the basic physics and math related to orbits. (The latter totally dependant on the help, guides, slaps and pokes provided by the members of this forum).

You have my deepest condolences for you bad choice of parents I offered to buy it for my kids. One said "nah, maybe later", one said "already have it, and a copy for my son" and the remaining two said "I'll grab on the next steam sale" ... But it could be added that all 4 are 18+ (some with a wide margin ...).

Given the huge amount of fun gametime I've had (and still have) with KSP I consider it amongst the best spend money in my long gaming life. So I'll happily pay for the DLC. The only issue I can see is that patch management can be a bit more hairy. I remember the mild chaos with Civ4 when they had patches for: Original game (plus localisations) Original game with expansion 1 (plus localisations) Original game with expansion 1 and 2 (plus localisations) Repacked original game including expansion 1 and 2 (plus localisations) Now add 3 platforms (or 4 if they maintain the 32bit version) and it will require a fair bit of organisation and logistics to be manageable. But it's a minor worry, I know that I'll continue to have fun anyway for years to come.

where's the shadow?
Curveball Anders replied to Garthog's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
That's what they used in the Dambusters raid to get the correct altitude above the water. (Except they angled the spots inwards, so the spots merged at a preset altitude. No radar precision AGL instruments in WWII). -
Spacecraft Design Evolution in KSP

Much the same for me. Something that gets the job done, preferably in a cost efficient way, and looks like it at least might work. -
Best altitude for ease of rendezvous
Curveball Anders replied to Jestersage's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Big thanks for this, just what I needed. (My cheezy desk calculator refused cube roots so I had to write a program (math in C, eugh ...) to solve it.) From now on I will go for 284.5 km orbit for stations since I prefer a launch orbit of 75k for all launches, and with the station (or other parked gadgets) its perfect at 1.5x orbital time. -
I've noticed this or similar with several different games. It appears that v-sync and/or frame rate limiters aren't applied in certain nominally 'low gpu load' scenes causing the gpu to run free and generate high load and ridiculous frame rate for no use at all. The worst offender managed to enter this state when the screen saver kicked in ... In KSP it can be solved by either installing a frame rate limiter mod (from Kerbokatz Small Utilities for instance). Or just not leave the game in such scene ...

I tend to restart or at least start a new save (and often forgetting about the old one) when there's either a new release and/or I've decided to add (or remove) some major mod(s).
-
I mainly play career (with sandbox as testing/simulation environment). While many contracts are boring and or bonkers I have no issues in choosing the ones that fit the story in my head and ignore or reject the ones that don't. Stations are often built as soon as I can (the contract for one almost always appears before that).

What is the Company Mascot for Squad?
Curveball Anders replied to ForumUser's topic in Kerbal Network
Indeed, so it's an ape, not a monkey -
Yey, now I actually might be triggered to put pen to paper (erh, well, fingers to keyboard) and record something instead of just talking to myself while playing
