what will be the first flag planted on mars be?
A35K replied to basbr's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Well, the Cold War is long gone, so I don't see the point of bringing any national flag. I only hope that whoever lands on Mars first will bring a flag that represents humanity and the World as a whole. -
Watched it yesterday, it was fantastic! Well, I won't say much about it, as everything I have to say has already been said, but this is my updated list of Star Wars movies, from worst to best: I, II, IV, III (okay, I know there was a lot of cheesy acting, but in the actual scenes that matter, this one does a really good job of capturing the action, and showing the fall to the Dark Side, plus I've never really liked IV too much), VI, VII, V. So Episode VII is now my second favorite!

10/10, classic. My bad. It seems NATO is getting quite uncreative with their names!
-
9/10. I don't know what it is, or how it flies, but it looks cool. It's actually not a 'Flanker', that would be the Su-27, the one I posted was the new Su-35. Hey, nobody said military only!

Is this type of behaviour actually realistic? It seems to me that the re-entry heating is exaggerated. Surely, in real life, when you come in at 5km/s at the very top of the atmosphere (Which is almost negligible, even in the case of Eve) you don't just explode in a femtosecond!!!

What would it take to make my own EM Drive?
A35K replied to cubinator's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I don't get why people are always so skeptical about these new things. Sure, they might seem to violate laws of physics, but maybe there is more to learn about? I myself don't think these things will be able to produce enough thrust for flying cars etc., but IF they work in space, it would revolutionize space travel. And also, aren't there other speculated types of "reactionless drives", such as the Quantum Vacuum Plasma Thruster? I know all of these are not proven to work, but they are a starting point... And anyway, aren't photons technically supposed to have momentum, due to wave-particle duality? So wouldn't a thrust generated by massless photons NOT disobey the conservation of momentum? What about solar sails?- 29 replies

I use a laptop...

5/10: Hey! Is that a rocket engine I see there?
-
8/10: Deadly cannons, awesome paint scheme, too many wires.
-
1342: You take a brake and watch Star Wars VII, in the conveniently placed cinema on this floor...

Would it actually be possible to make a plane with a wing arrangement like the X-wing? Basically a biplane, but the wings are at an angle. Would it be stable?

Thank you! By the way, if you were wondering what the huge fuel tanks on the "N1" were, they were procedural tanks from the stretchy tanks mod, which I forgot to add to my mod list. Also, just a question, how do badges work? Will it be automatically added to my profile or will I have to insert it myself? Anyway, I'm glad you liked it, it took quite a while! By the way, I had a lot of fun on this, it was a very good challenge, as it had a very vague goal, which is good as it leaves a lot up to the "challenger"!

First of all, this was on a slightly older version of KSP, as I already had the mods I wanted installed. Here are the mods I used: KW Rocketry, MechJeb, Kerbal Joint Reinforcement, and KSP Interstellar. Also, for some reason, the exhaust flames on KW Rocketry engines doesn't show up. Ok, here we go: After the Mun has mocked Kerbalkind for many years, the two superpowers on Kerbin, the USK (United States of Kerberica), and the UKSR (Union of Kerviet Socialist Republics) decide to come together to show the Mun a lesson. After building a new space center on Cape Baikaveral (get it?), they get ready for a massive space offensive. Here is how it went: http://imgur.com/a/AFusi (I gave the link instead of embedding it, as when I tried to embed it it only gave me the version before I added the description to the images, not the updated version, as they have the same URL. Does anyone know how to embed albums the way it used to be done before?)
-
Will get the pictures up in a few hours, but mine turned out to be more of an invasion of the Mun by 2 superpowers than a crusade, and some bombing included as well...
-
About to get started on this, but just one thing: How do I embed an imgur album?

I have around 30ish active vessels, but the thing is most of them are relics of past missions (although they are still operational, (e.g. Rovers), thus not debris), but also "permanent" things like satellites and space stations and bases. In terms of actual active missions I never have more than 4-5. Now, including flags I have over 100, and I now wished I hadn't placed so many flags...

How far can you get on SWAGs - before you have to do some math?
A35K replied to JoeSchmuckatelli's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Or you could just overbuild everything like I do... For my first Duna mission I sent an asparagus stage lander with about 6000m/s of Dv, which then docked in orbit to return to Kerbin. Once in orbit I realized the lander could almost make it from LKO to Duna and back by itself, let alone being carried by the mothership. -
What about that Mun landing he did in one of the Interstellar Quest episodes, where he barely dodged a huge cliff at 500m/s using only ANT engines?

There should be some sort of proper treaty signed by the major industrial countries, something that CAN be enforced. Some sort of requirements that must be met otherwise the country will face severe sanctions. While China seems to be reducing their use of coal, now it is India that is starting. What needs to be done is also less money spent on advanced weaponry and more money spent on energy. If most governments spent on researching fusion what they spent on developing high tech stealth craft it would probably be achievable in the very near future. One thing that I don't get is why major powers such as USA, Russia, China, keep on spending billions in developing stealth technology, when this would only be needed when fighting against countries that are equipped with high tech radars. But pretty much the only military action these forces have seen recently is against terrorists (a.k.a. A bunch of idiots with guns in the deserts) and Middle Eastern dictatorships using Soviet equipment from the 60s, which I'm sure does not require billion dollar stealth aircraft to destroy.

I read on a paper somewhere a few months ago that in some modern art museum in Rome a cleaner disposed of an exhibit, thinking it was literally garbage!
-
Unfortunately that seems to be true for quite a few space agencies these days. We need a new space race! Where what can be done will be done (ok, short of spacecraft propelled by nuclear explosions. Plus, the name Orion is already taken up now!)

Does anyone know of some free online simulator type thing for n-body physics? Basically a very simple model that allows you to place some planets and see what happens.
