totm dec 2019 Russian Launch and Mission Thread
sh1pman replied to tater's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Guess who is trying to jump on a train of smallsat launches? With a reusable rocket, no less! https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/06/04/russias-advanced-technology-fund-says-will-begin-testing-reusable/ Not that it will ever fly or anything. Pretty sure it won't. I'm just surprised how many companies are proposing smallsat rockets these days. -
That's why I said "apparently". I was surprised that the delay was in the news. Somehow I thought we already knew that.
-
News, apparently. https://www.cnet.com/news/spacex-delays-plans-to-send-space-tourists-to-circle-moon/ SpaceX will reportedly no longer be sending a pair of space tourists to circle the moon this year. The flight -- set up by the rocket company founded by billionaire Elon Musk -- was scheduled for late 2018, but this has been delayed, according to The Wall Street Journal.
-
I thought they were trying to save fairings for research purposes, not for reuse. At least not until they figure out how to consistrently catch them with a net.

If launch in very cold, Ivan, you mix some vodka into kerosene. So rocket is warm up.
-
Upper stage is Block 5, while the booster is Block 4. No wonder they have issues with this Frankenstein rocket.

(Job interview at BO) - What experience with space technology do you have? - I did extensive computer simulations of lunar surface docking and fuel transfer operations in the program called Ker... - You’re hired!

Can't see that happening. There's just way too much money to burn through And yea, the fact that the richest person in the world is ready to spend it all on space is totally awesome.

totm dec 2019 Russian Launch and Mission Thread

He is a completely incompetent gung-ho idiot. Career politician, never worked in rocketry, spaceflight industry, science or engineering. Graduated with a degree in journalism, former leader of a pseudo-nationalist party. Under his "oversight" the Russian space industry became a sorry mess that it is now (well, it was going downhill before, but he only made it worse). http://spacenews.com/putin-taps-rogozin-to-head-roscosmos/ The translation is sketchy sometimes, but it gives the general idea: Article -

https://www.rt.com/politics/427662-arms-chief-rogozin-space/ Well, if it wasn’t obvious before, RIP Roscosmos. The people were so “happy” about the appointment that Roscosmos had to lock down the comments section on their social media page. -
The opposite would also be funny. “We're building this huge rocket, but we won’t tell you what’s it for until it’s done!”
-
Waterproof, reusable and space-capable. Impossible, for sure.
-
Even BFR isn't big enough to house a hab ring.
-
Should just make the fairings waterproof.
-
So it looks like the best weapon for space combat is a conventional missile with proximity-activated shrapnel charge. Lasers might be useful for missile defense though.

ok, only Soyuz-5. Doesnt really matter though. It’s not very likely to ever happen. -

It's probably just busy-work program for Soyuz-5 and Proton Medium rockets, as the commercial launch market is being eaten by SpaceX. Kinda like LOP-G for SLS. -

How do you like that, Elon Musk? http://tass.com/science/1005554 -
Can’t they just do an additional WDR just before launch? Fill it with RP1/LOX, wait for a couple of minutes, make sure everything is fine and nothing tends to explode, empty the tanks, then let the crew in. Fill it up once again and ignite the Merlins. Even this is excessive, IMO, because they already do static fire, so that any problems of explosive nature would show up long before there are people sitting on top of the rocket.

Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical questions
sh1pman replied to DAL59's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I can see the military being interested in stable super heavy elements. Tank armor, anti-armor shells with immense kinetic energy, AP rounds, that sort of things. Maybe radiation protection as well? -
Do want! But a hundred bucks... that hurts.

Refuel them with enriched uranium?

Core heat broken in 1.4.3?
sh1pman replied to sh1pman's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
Yeah, 5-star engineer makes it possible to run 3 converters with no overheating. Was it always like this? It’s a bit confusing because I thought that every converter has its own core heat, and in order to run several at the same time I’d need more radiators, not a better engineer. -

No, EC is fine, look at those solars.
