The Best Rocket For Landing Scifi Thrusters
Nightside replied to Spacescifi's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Just use the rocket equation. Assuming that you appear a 0 velocity, you won’t need to cancel too much velocity (~45 m/s) as gravity starts to accelerate the ship down. To choose the best rocket for the task you will need to decide a couple of things about your vessel. -What fraction of the total mass is payload - Do you also need to lift off again (will similar payload) or can you hoverslam? -Do you have one large thruster or many small one? - this will affect what kind of engines you can use and the ISP. - Is your design mass limited or volume limited? -
mmmm. time for second breakfast. But wait, wouldn't frosting be an emulsion (entrained air)?
-
It is so hard to get perspective on where that came from from that camera angle. Is it from the grid fins or the engine area? Can the hydraulic fluid freeze?
-
Sounds like a soft water landing.
-
There was some smoke and splatter on the camera, so I guess they close. Was the loss of signal that occurred before a comms failure, or simply the booster dropping below the horizon?
-
Does geometry count? I prefer geometry, myself.
-
Do they have any customers? I guess they could send interns if they haven't got any paying customers yet.

Nice work @michaelbezos1. I don't know much about 3d modeling, but there is a whole subforum devoted to it here: https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/forum/15-modelling-and-texturing-discussion/ You will have better luck getting technical advice over there.

My dog, Comet, has an extreme case of this. -
Random Science Facts Thread!
Nightside replied to Grand Ship Builder's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Hmm, I saw somewhere that the ratio of dog years to human years was dependent on the weight of the dog. If I'm reading this chart right, an old, large dog could, in theory, travel backwards through time by losing weight. -

[New] Space Launch System / Orion Discussion Thread
Nightside replied to ZooNamedGames's topic in Science & Spaceflight
It has its own thread, which I mentioned. However, I thought that discussion of Boeing’s shift in focus away from engineering and safety was relevant here as well. -
Nah, the front just fell off.
-
Would it also be undetectable by other autonomous vehicles?

[New] Space Launch System / Orion Discussion Thread
Nightside replied to ZooNamedGames's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Cross posting from here: A couple of interesting articles about how changes to Boeing's corporate structure led to the disastrous design of the 737 Max and it's MCAS system. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/11/how-boeing-lost-its-bearings/602188/ https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/11/18/the-case-against-boeing What are people's thoughts about how these changes affected the space side of the company? -
Ooh, what if they build them with scrap from the starship prototypes! (Although they will have some serious flattening to do.)
-
I'm reviving this thread after reading 2 fascinating articles this week about how Boeing's shift over the last couple decades from a company that valued it's engineers and had a world renowned culture of innovation and safety became one that appears to be driven by greed alone. Although the victims of the 737 Max planes operated by Lion Air and Ethiopian paid the price, Boeing's focus on money over good product also has ramifications for their spaceflight projects as well. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/11/how-boeing-lost-its-bearings/602188/ https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/11/18/the-case-against-boeing And, not specifically related to Boeing or the 737 Max, but an interesting take on how adding complicated safety features to complex systems can have disastrous consequences. https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/cautionary-tales/

What do you think about the CYBERTRUCK?
-
My thinking is that the F9 system would lose too much payload capacity after adding all the new shielding and landing hardware.

Well this sixth planet is crossed off, so we know its not that one. Also, the antenna is pointing at Earth. What are the gray line/dashes? ------------------------------------------ Best scam ever? https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/nigerian-astronaut-lost-in-space/ -
