We are the stars, and the consciousness of the universe. Somehow, consciousness is a property of the universe, and each of us is a part of that consciousness. Through us, the stars know of themselves. Whether there's any meaning to that I don't know, but it's a pretty darn cool fact and I think life is worth protecting for that.

I got a haircut, got my phone's battery replaced, and tried to get a fresh drivers licence but the DMV was closed. Typical DMV... And I presented a show at the planetarium, and ran out of time before getting to everything I wanted to. It was a good show anyway.

Demo-2 will probably be the first mission where the second stage is anywhere near as exciting to watch as the first stage after separation...

We're not ready for flights yet, they are static firings on our test stand. Our engine burns kerosene and GOX and is very tiny! (Estimated 100 N) Once the firings are done we'll cannibalize the test stand for our next, bigger test stand. -

School's cancelled tomorrow because of tonight's snowstorm! Also the dress rehearsal of my club's rocket test went well tonight, and we're on schedule to attempt firings in a couple weeks! -

Starship looks more and more like a space shuttle?
cubinator replied to Serenity's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Aerogel? Kinda brittle but absurdly light and insulating. -

Computers believe the beginning of time was midnight on January 1st, 1970. That was arbitrarily decided on because a lot of people started working on more complicated computers after 1970, and they needed standards. Now, current computers sometimes forget when old things were made, and when that happens they just append the date '0' to whatever it is. Then we see the date 'January 1st, 1970' even though it was actually made much later. I actually see December 31st, 1969 because I'm in a timezone that's behind GMT, which the Unix date is based on. -
Starship looks more and more like a space shuttle?
cubinator replied to Serenity's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Maybe they are different means to the same end, and the Shuttle simply couldn't achieve the reusability savings it needed to do big space infrastructure. SpaceX has learned a lot about reusability and cost-saving - hopefully they can give Starship that capability. -
Starship looks more and more like a space shuttle?
cubinator replied to Serenity's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Starship isn't trying to glide like an airplane, the fins are for drag and control instead of lift. Then it turns around at the right speed and does its powered descent. The shuttle had to land like an airplane, and it handled pretty poorly at that. Huge wings also add mass. Starship's vertical landings are simpler in some ways that make it easier to deal with. -
