  1. Looks at hours spent in that dinosaur forest in FF3... A game that cost like $80 in 90's dollars btw, I hope I got some play time from it. I'm a gamer since the Atari 2600 days, I think the state of gaming today is pretty decent. A lot of old games had grinding, OG Zelda you to had to grind to get rupees, Fantasia was nothing but grind- basically any game that had a trade and/or XP system had some grind. Nostalgia is a powerful lens, but eventually I sold my consoles and games to make a PC rig and don't regret it one bit. Sure there is a lot of crap out there, but the gems of today are as good or better than the classics.
  2. Construx were the superior building platform back in the day, they had a proper XYZ building paradigm as well as great logic in that if you were short a length you could make up for it with 2 shorter lengths + a knot. Hinges, pulleys, wheels, cool cockpit parts- we used to make spacehips that would shoot down a zip line. Sadly Fisher-Price kind of sputtered out, but man Construx was the bomb. Lego IMO was always limited and the things you made were heavy and fragile, Construx could be used to make actual toys. Just to add another thing- the connections in Construx relied on a U shape to connect things, so it got the engineering blood flowing when building things- it got you thinking about stress/loading.
  3. lots of good tutorials but this one clicked for me when I first started. Start with some LKO rescues first and park closer and closer until you get comfortable with rendevous, then try docking. First time docking line everything up so that the ports are facing each other and the vessels are on parallel lines, then just rcs slowly. I find orienting the craft you control so that the rcs controls are really on axis, aka don't mess with diagonal rcs movements or inverted movements, is important. Trust me, once you have a couple under your belt it becomes second nature and pretty relaxing to do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v1ZLXLBMQo
  4. When using this with USI-LS do I need to tweak the hab settings anywhere, or does everything just work together?
  5. Yeah, this can happen- I've only played Borderlands 2 through Proton and it worked decent, there is a setting in the properties called "set launch options" where you can insert this: PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command% I saw a bit better performance with this, less lag whenever some elements were first loaded, less cpu use. It's a lot of screwing around though to install and test random stuff, I'd stick to the native version for less drama (I played BL2 through Proton to play Coop with Windows users).
  6. This is an old sentiment that isn't true any more. You can run Adobe and Autodesk products on Win and Mac, you can run free programs like Blender, Gimp, Krita on Linux, Mac, and Windows. Macs use standard processors (as in not PowerPC) so that one difference from a decade ago is gone. I dislike Windows, but for compatibility with everything it's the best option.
  7. In your games listing right click the game>properties. You will see a checkbox that says "Force the use of Steam Compatability tool," this will allow you to select Proton. I'm not sure if you can have a native install alongside a Proton install, maybe with some manual file moving.
  8. Turbo pumped is one of my favorites for extreme missions, they are the OG for small craft. I also like Kerbal Space Command for clever practical missions/roleplay.
  9. Me too, just bought breaking ground but don't want to commit to a save until I know what works. *I have no opinion either way btw, I'll adapt to aero changes
  10. It's computer animation, it's possible to make the planets follow a roller coaster path around the Sun, changing spin and tilt as they go. Hopefully the KSP2 team use a better rig to set the planets in motion, I can't help but feel the KSP1 one was overly complex and that's why there are so many limits to it.
  11. This reminds me a bit of Play Your Way, I may have to try this method out. I just got the new DLC and there are a lot of cool science mods, the big question is what the heck to do with all that science? As a resource it needs some balance for sure.
  12. Well, I was going to play stock for a bit, looks like ole Snark has other plans for me!
  13. Having a command pod + L1 pilot + heat shield is the best way to re-enter, you can grab the science from your experiments and ditch them before re-entry. If you want 2 kerbals, eg a pilot and scientist, a command pod-lander can-heat shield works. The pilot holding retrograde is the key, trying to do it manually can get a bit hairy when it matters most. Make sure you have enough EC when doubling up! A command pod by itself will orient itself aerodynamically.
  14. Wow this mod is so crucial to the KSP experience, it's weird EVAing without a sound. Thanks for keeping this mod going
  15. Give me contracts that build useful infrastructure, milestones, and contribute to progression- well thought out, balanced contracts as opposed to random ones, with some side work along the way. Being able to relate to the community is good, seeing how different people do the same contract is fun.
  16. If it has what looks like challenging progression and well thought out missions (that add to replay value) I'll grab it next summer, if it looks like another sandbox grinder not at all.
  17. Meh, Apple is pretty good at breaking software with every new OS release so I can see why someone would jump to a conclusion. Windows, as much as I despise it, is really good at supporting old software (eg you can run PS 5.5 on Win 7). Linux is generally screwing around with libraries no matter the version, if you are compiling anyway. Anyhow, Apple could be a bit better about keeping some legacy support- an old story: I worked at a place that had shipping services, and someone wanted to return their new G3, and I was like whaaaat, why would you do that? They were a gfx person and the G3 had zero support for their scsi peripherals- Apple just cut the cord instantly. But its weird that software breaks in that Apple generally has software that is statically built, at least it did in the old days (I have no say here either tho, mac user from 8.6-10.6). It seems as though Apple really puts a strain on developers whenever they release a new OS, devs have to scramble to keep up.
  18. If you don't mind a bit of RNG Battle for Wesnoth is free and has a bunch of user made content + you can play people online. It will drive you insane though. Less open field strat and more close in is Darkest Dungeon if you want more masochistic fun.
  19. There could be options for when LS runs out, like many LS mods do already, and/or have really good balance and game mechanics to deal with it without potentially bricking a mission, eg. a BL2 type paid respawn that could be optional, etc. I tend to favor video game logic over realism though...
  20. Depends if KSP2 has good, motivational progression happening. Also the colonization thing is a big factor depending on how its done.
  21. I like abstraction in video games, but I think it'd be neat to have the science be more like real science. The KSP instruments actually give values based on where they are which is cool, so providing multiple data points with an instrument could give more science, having high level scientists operating equipment could give more, etc. You could have an abstraction where science obtained generates funds (tech/gov't sector) and then funds could pay for R&D for tech. Maybe have different themed companies offer contracts of varying return/degrees of difficulty, allowing the player to choose a contract or hold out. Having missions where you take a company's gear or team, or search for various things on a surface, or recover lost gear, in return for funds or technology would be cool. Getting rare or unique parts from companies could be a fun mechanic to keep players interested.
  22. I've only owned one Windows machine in my life, and that was a crappy refurb to practice some network stuff on. As much as I dislike the route MS is taking with Win10 (just set someone up on a new machine) I'll probably get a Windows machine next year for gaming and pop a linux HD in it for my daily driver. Getting tired of the workarounds and months/years long waits for some Linux game ports (looking at you Aspyr). Granted some projects do amazing work in this area, but sadly most don't. Is there a poll option for that?
  23. Well, across the lake but close enough - a lot of Canadian culture seeps across the border.
