Discussion: Optimization

This is like watching Mike Tyson chew the ear off of a baby. I almost feel bad for the little guy but... He keeps putting his foot in his mouth. -
Planes always fishtail
Rocket In My Pocket replied to noobsrtoast's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Here's one, not even a terribly good design, uses very basic parts including the basic landing gear which is the buggiest, they are also mounted to the wings which tends to cause problems. No wheel tweakables have been changed. However this takes off and lands fine for me besides some very light drifting that is easy to compensate for. I've landed it going 150+ m/s horizontally. As I stated before the only way I could get this or any other plane to fishtail was to hold the nose down forcibly while rocketing full speed down the runway. Give it a try I suppose? Landing flaps are on the RCS action group. I just learned an expensive lesson.
Rocket In My Pocket replied to strider3's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I agree for everything but the Science Jr. Considering it's cheap price tag of 880 Funds, when compared to it's weight, awkwardly large size (As large or larger than the Mk.1 command pod itself!), and exceedingly weak crash tolerance it just hardly seems worth the effort. Everything else is either small enough, light enough, and/or expensive enough to warrant saving. -
I've done about this same thing with a heatshield/command chair and it worked fine. I even made one that was nothing but a ladder/heatshield, it worked but you just couldn't time warp lol. Whether fairings not protecting Kerbals from heat is intended or a bug I think you are going to have to throw a heatshield on there somewhere.

Make 2 crafts track each other
Rocket In My Pocket replied to REAPER7's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Once the two crafts are aligned isn't it just a simple matter of moving forward until the docking ports touch? It sounds like you are making this more complicated than it is. Craft A should be completely still, not rotating or moving in any way, then you go to craft B, orient to the docking port and make the connection. Not sure why you are constantly switching back and forth? As far as the change you're requesting I don't think it's possible as the game only allows you to control one vessel at a time, and I'd wager that's a pretty "hard-coded" limitation. I think someone has a mod that let's you remotely control another craft...can't think of the name though. -
Planes always fishtail
Rocket In My Pocket replied to noobsrtoast's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Don't worry about it, the DEV's have even said they are waiting for for the next Unity update to truly "fix" the wheels. My original post was probably somewhat ...snarky upon reflection, I'm not surprised someone took umbrage with it. Having done some testing, the only way I could reproduce the "fishtailing" and "wipeouts" people are reporting is to forcibly hold the nose down as I accelerated down the runway, admittedly this eventually at around 40-50 m/s resulted in the plane spinning out. I'm thinking if a planes COM is too far forward it would put extra down pressure on the nose wheel and make the same thing happen. I think we can learn two things from this, keep the COM back towards the rear wheels, and try to get your nose up as soon as possible to take pressure off that front wheel. Maybe tail-dragger designs wouldn't suffer from this problem as much? I suppose the reason this problem seems to affect some while missing others completely all boils down to design preferences. So...I guess it's more of a coincidence than anything that I haven't had any problems. -
Why is there a Monolith near KSC

I play Career too. In what way is it not possible? Build a wall, put wheels on it, launch it, drive it over there, return to space center, done.- 45 replies

Planes always fishtail
Rocket In My Pocket replied to noobsrtoast's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I spend most of my time on KSP designing and flying planes. From the very small, to the very large, from VTOL to Boatplanes. I just simply haven't had any of the issues some people seem to be complaining about...and I make some pretty odd designs. I'm not telling you what problems you are and aren't experiencing, but if this was a truly global problem that had nothing to do with design...why are a lot of players having no problems at all? Personally, I haven't changed anything about how I design planes since the new landing gear system was introduced, I don't play with any of the friction/traction control sliders and yet all the planes I've made since then (dozens upon dozens) take off/land just fine. I'm certainly sorry if I upset you, but I've yet to see a problem with the new gear aside from a few minor bugs with placement and the whole "wheel blocked" thing. -
As I've said before the Stayputnik should open like a cargo boy into two halves so you can place stuff inside of it without messy clipping. This would make it far more useful, as well as unique. This should only be available to do in the VAB/SPH like how non retractable solar panels work. Real life Sputnik:

Why is there a Monolith near KSC
Rocket In My Pocket replied to Markus1002's topic in KSP1 Discussion
This is KSP, we solve our problems via engineering. If you don't like the monolith being there, Build a frigging wall on wheels and drive it over there in front of it so you don't have to see it. Or even park a rocket ship there; call it a memorial, build a statue of the first Kerbal astronaut, some kind of fake "building"...I don't know...anything!- 45 replies

Reentry Effects and Plasma
Rocket In My Pocket replied to AlamoVampire's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I thought that was fixed? v1.1 (2016-07-04) Changed re-entry effects to activate only during harsh aerobraking. -

Ladders...and snakes, Oh my!
Rocket In My Pocket replied to strider3's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Then test it again with gravity hacked. Just to be sure. -
When you recover a plane you are getting practically 100% of the funds back except for whatever fuel you used. So there really isn't much of a game play reason to not recover them. You don't have to think of it as rebuilding the plane each time so much as it's being parked inside somewhere for later use. I think this is really a question of how you are looking at it. That said, if you just like really parking them outside/refueling them for RP reasons, go right ahead, it's certainly not hurting any thing. To answer your question I find that just off the runway on either side where the incline stops is far enough to not block further launches. the simplest way to refuel them would be to make a "refueling truck" of sorts with a big fuel tank on it and a docking port (The planes will have to have docking ports as well.) or a Klaw. A drill/ISRU setup would certainly be handy but it's not a requirement.

Reentry Effects and Plasma
Rocket In My Pocket replied to AlamoVampire's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
How could re-entry be the slowest part of the game performance wise? You should be down to all of 3 parts left on your craft. Command pod/Heatshield/Parachute. I'e downloaded and used the mod mentioned above and saw no performance hit whatsoever and I have a below average PC. -
Planes always fishtail
Rocket In My Pocket replied to noobsrtoast's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I've never even touched the friction or traction control settings on the wheels and I've never had a single issue. I really don't get why everyone has this exact formula of settings they think will magically fix things. (The funniest part is that no one agrees on what the correct setting is.) If you leave them on default and design your plane well, you'll be fine. Some screenshots of your planes that have problems would help us address your issue. -
I think this is a bit of a game play balance concession. If the external chair could be crewed from the VAB, why would you use any other command module for crewed missions? It's the lightest, and you are prolly going to add more reaction wheels/batteries to your craft anyways. I'd wager the Dev's gave it this limitation to avoid having every single rocket look the same, with a few Kerbals hanging off the side in chairs. Take Command is a good mod for those who want this functionality, I'll admit it helps a lot when testing rovers and such. That said, I had some issues with using it in 1.1.3 as it was throwing up all sorts of exceptions. Perhaps it's been updated though.

That's what I'm saying, it's hard enough to hit something in space if you are trying to. The odds of accidentally hitting something are infinitesimally small. If you aren't trying to rendezvous with it on purpose, the difference in speed is likely to be so great that the "collision" will happen so fast the game won't even recognize it's happened and the crafts will just phase right through each other. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence of this actually happening in other posts around the forums, as this question gets asked quite a bit.

How to make a Kerbal Space Program Mod?
Rocket In My Pocket replied to Mr. Quark's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
You'd have to be a lot more specific about what you actually wanted to do. But in a vague sense it's mostly about editing config files and such.
