You can't drop the decoupler once you start the mission... The stack separator will decouple from both parts it connects simultaneously and just drift off. On the other hand, you can make the two ships already 'pre-docked' in the VAB and not use any decouplers or stack separators at all... Also, you can use a single docking port the same way you use a decoupler - you can connect anything to the docking port and it will 'undock' from it once you select the 'undock' option from the right click menu. This is a one time thing, of course. You can't re-dock the other thing later unless it has a docking port of it's own.

Detachable, flexable power cords/fuel hoses
Awaras replied to SirJoab's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
The largest problem KSP's Unity engine has is that it chokes on the amount of physics simulation it has to perform. Do you have any idea how CPU-intensive it is to simulate flexible cables and hoses so they don't look ridiculously unrealistic? -
This is not correct. The only way he can increase dV by shutting down engines is if he has a mix of engines with different Isp's and he shuts down all less efficient engines. If he only has one engine type, than the dV will remain the same no matter how many engines he shuts down. Now, if he was to REMOVE all those extra engines completely, he would get an increase in dV because of the mass reduction (with the tradeoff of a longer burn time).

Yeah, if you do it right, you can get from LKO to Duna orbit with around 1000 dV. Unless you are sending a huge payload, an orange tank is a bit of an overkill.

You upload your pictures to an image hosting site like imgur.com and then copy the 'BBCode' link you get there into your post. Basically, all you need is a link to a picture with img tags around it. It should look something like this, only without the spaces: [ img ]*image url*[ /img ]

Arthur Clarke and Stephen Baxter had a similar premise in their book 'The Light of Other Days'. Near the end of the book, it turns out that all the life on Earth today evolved from microorganisms that came out of a capsule that was buried deep under the ocean floor. The capsule was placed there by a sentient race that evolved on Earth before the giant impact that created our moon, with the intention of allowing at least some form of life to survive the catastrophe.

You can combine the slingshot and capture burn - due to the oberth effect, you get more 'bang per buck' (dV per unit of fuel expended) the faster you move and the closer you are to a gravity well. So, generally, IF you have to burn to get captured, the most efficient time to burn would be at or near your periapsis.

Are you sure you used the 'fairing' pieces and not the 'fuselage' pieces instead? There are two 'fuselage' and two 'fairing' pieces The fuselage ones are not meant to be decoupled... *Edit* After playing around with the contrast of your first screenshot, I can confirm that this is your problem. The non-jettisonable 'fuselage' pieces have gray stripes on them, and jettisonable fairing pieces do not...

Yes, you can use a reverse slingshot around one of the moons to get captured into jool orbit. It all depends on the speed you enter Jool SOI, though. If you set up your hohmann transfer right you don't need to shed a lot of velocity to get captured. If you enter Jool SOI going at greater speed, you might have trouble getting a capture this way...

If you reduce your velocity to zero just before you hit the atmosphere then no, you won't need a heat shield since you will be falling at or near terminal velocity at all times. The result would probably be very similar to what happens with those baloons people let fly up to 'space' where they burst and let their cargo fall back down to earth, or to what Felix Baumgartner did last year. However, as the author of XKCD said, you would need a huge amount of fuel to reduce your velocity to zero, and that would be extremely unpractical... Think of it like this: It takes most of the fuel of a huge rocket to get the relatively tiny payload up to orbital speed. That means that, in order to slow that payload back down to zero, you would need another rocket almost as big as the one that launched it. Imagine the size of the rocket that would be needed to bring that whole rocket with it's fuel intact up to orbit. It would need to be enormous.

Before I found KSP I played Orbiter a lot. The only thing that bothered me was the very thing I like the best about KSP: The complete control over the design of your craft. I mean, yes, you can find plenty of spacecraft made for orbiter, but you have to spend a lot of time finding something that will be capable of what you had in mind (without being overpowered). I guess that my ideal game would have KSP's ship assembly mechanics and Orbiter's realistic full-sized simulation...

@GagaX Pozdrav! @supermantoni A jbmmumjkubzju ja sam kao nešto aktivan na engleskom delu foruma ali nesto u zadnje vreme nemam vremena za igre generalno... :/

There was a kickstarter a few months ago for a true MoM remake. They were funded and it seems like they are commited to making a game that will have the same feel and depth as the original MoM: http://myworldsofmagic.com/

What do you think of Deus Ex like augmentations?
Awaras replied to EvilotionCR2's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Actually there is already a thriving community of so called body modders that do a lot of weird things to their bodies. One of the weirdest is implanting magnets in the tips of their fingers that let them sense electromagnetic fields. They can literally feel if current is flowing through a cable or not. I think they would gladly embrace this kind of technology. That said, I believe that we will be able to grow replacement limbs and organs from the patient's own tissue long before we are able to make artificial organs that match or are better than natural ones. -

So basically, you want to ban augments (and genetic engineering, as I can see in the other thread) because the rich people will have an advantage over poor people? How is that any different from any other technology ever? I mean, indoor plumbing used to be something only rich people can afford. As with anything, with mass usage the cost would go down untill almost anyone can afford augments. -
Getting to my transfer window?
Awaras replied to XoX's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Return to the KSC, launch another rocket or spaceplane and use timewarp while still on the launchpad. When you get to around 30 minutes to your launch window, return to the craft in orbit and burn. Alternatively, launch a small satellite to a very high orbit (say 1000km) and warp from there. If you are afraid of missing your launch window use the Kerbal alarm clock mod. -

"filth" falling off rockets after lift-off
Awaras replied to MmPMSFmM's topic in Science & Spaceflight
It's ice. The rockets use liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen as fuel. They are very, very cold. The water vapor in the air condenses on the rocket and freezes. -
But... Isn't that how it works right now? Here, I made a simple craft that has both separatrons and parachutes in the same stage as the radial decouplers and they all get activated at the same time: *EDIT* As far as I can tell, it works for separatrons, parachutes and SRBs. It doesn't work for liquid fuel engines - if you try to activate a LFE at the same time the stack it is on decouples it will not work, but if you need a LFE just for a decoupling event, you are doing something wrong...

Time Warping via the Tracking Center.
Awaras replied to Levelord's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
The oscilation happens when the map is centered on your craft, I think. Try centering the map on one of the planets or even the Sun by pressing 'Tab'. -
Multiple fuel tanks?
Awaras replied to razalloveragain's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
A picture or craft file would help pinpoint the problem.
